Mubai conceded helplessly, "I said my hands are tied when it comes to kicking Yun Ruobing out, but I didn't say I can't help you get back into the lab."

As he expected, Xinghe sat back down again. Naturally, Mubai retracted his hand.

"But didn't your grandmother have banned me from the lab?" Xinghe argued before adding, "Actually I don't need to go back, the research can go on just fine with the support of another lab. It's just that I don't want to hand the patent over to any company other than yours."

Mubai's eyes lit up with good cheer. He was overjoyed because Xinghe was acting in his interests.

However, what Xinghe said next sent him cras.h.i.+ng back to reality. "Such a good patent has to go to Lin Lin."

He should have known! In her eyes, he was nothing more than the person that was unfortunately attached to her son!

"Therefore, if it is too much of a ha.s.sle, it is not compulsory that I have to return to the Xi Family Lab," Xinghe said truthfully. She was telling Mubai, even without the Xi's support, she would achieve success.

Mubai stared at her and replied with a smile, "Don't worry, there will always be a spot for you at the lab if I have anything to do with it. The solution is actually very simple and I swear no one will be able to stand in your way."

"What solution?"

"Goodness, I'm hungry. How about we continue this after dinner?"

Two can play at this game. Mubai knew the moment he let the cat out of the bag, Xinghe would get up and leave. He couldn't allow that to happen.

Why is it so hard to have a proper dinner-date with this woman?

Mubai groaned inwardly. There was a long line of women wis.h.i.+ng that he'd invite them out to dinner but as fate would have it, he was hooked by one who wasn't part of that line.

Of course, even Mubai himself was surprised by how deep he had fallen for the lady sitting across from him.

Xinghe narrowed her eyes at him as if reading his thoughts.

Mubai fidgeted in his seat, worried that she would walk out on him.

He was saved by the waiter because before she could come to a decision, their food arrived.

Mubai had ordered a scrumptious full course meal. Everything was exquisite.

Mubai helped Xinghe slice a piece of steak and set the juicy piece of red meat on her plate. "The house special is their steak, give it a try."

Xinghe picked up her cutlery wordlessly and started eating.

Mubai looked at her and his face lit up with a satisfactory smile. "What kind of cuisine is your favorite? We should do this more often."

"No, we shouldn't," Xinghe rejected him outright.

"I meant we should do this more often as a family, bring Lin Lin along with us," Mubai immediately tried for another tactic.

Xinghe raised her eyes to look at him. She said directly, "Don't rope Lin Lin into this. Furthermore, I don't have to see him now, I only hope that your family keeps your promise and let me raise him for a few years."

Mubai's smile turned down slightly. There was an appeal in his eyes when he said, "But it's my wish to return Lin Lin to a more complete family."

"Not mine."

Xinghe turned her gaze away and continued eating. Mubai on the other hand, had set his utensils down. His appet.i.te was gone.

Mubai was not that obtuse, his advances at romance, be they explicit or implicit, were rebuffed by Xinghe at every turn. He knew Xinghe had absolutely zero interest in him.

She might even be more than a little bit annoyed by his incessant advances.

To her, he was truly nothing more than some uninteresting object.

He knew there was no reason for her to accept him, to love him, but he couldn't help but feel hurt by that knowledge.
