Chapter 91 - Settle

It was only after Yu Tang coaxed Song Xiao to sleep that he got up and walked downstairs.

The Yu family members hadn’t dispersed yet, and were sitting in the living room, ill at ease. Two police officers from the special investigations team were still here as they waited for Yu Tang to give his account of what happened.

Standing at the top of the stairs on the second floor, Yu Tang looked arrogantly at the people sitting on the sofa down below with a dark and icy expression. He walked downstairs unhurriedly and saluted his grandfather. After Yu Taixian waved his hand, Yu Tang sat down next to the family head.

“Xiao Tang ah, you’ve been wronged.” Third grandfather took Yu Tang’s hand and patted it. “The police are still waiting; tell them what happened to you first, so that we don’t hinder the investigation.”

The two young police officers were holding notebooks, and they smiled and nodded. “What we need for now is an approximate understanding of the sequence of events. For follow-up matters, Mr Xiao Tang still has to come to the police station.”

Yu Tang nodded. Because of how influential the Yu family was, the police department here was being as friendly as possible. “Please ask if you have any questions.”

“How did the suspects capture you?” The officers started the standard inquiry procedure.

“There was a truck and a commercial vehicle on the highway. They had guns…” Yu Tang related his experience briefly and succinctly.

“Are you saying that the kidnappers weren’t there to abduct you in the first place?” The officers were astonished. Could it be that in this major abduction case, which had alarmed several aristocratic families in the city, the kidnappers had actually taken the wrong person?

“They planned to capture my friend at first, and when they later heard I was valuable, they took me along.” As Yu Tang spoke, he slowly raised his head and gave second uncle, who was sitting opposite him, a profound look.

Second uncle Yu Tong felt his heart thump at that expression.

In the case of Clem kidnapping Yu Tang, it was very simple. After all, as a notorious crime leader, he had long been on the wanted list. Even if he hadn’t kidnapped Yu Tang, he would still end up with a life sentence after being arrested by the police.

“So, you’re saying that they were aiming for your friend at first?” The young police officers shook their heads. It had to be said that no matter how unbridled Clem was, he wouldn’t provoke the Yu family. The sort of people he had threatened in the past were those nouveau riche who were purely businessmen; he usually wouldn’t provoke an aristocratic family like the Yu family, which had a finger in every pie.

“Their initial plan was to capture my friend to threaten me,” Yu Tang said unhurriedly. He accepted the hot tea Butler Cao which offered him, and slowly took a sip.

Yu Lang’s hand trembled, and he spilled the cup of black tea he was holding, but he didn’t dare make a sound. He accepted the towel which a maid brought for him to wipe his pants with; he didn’t dare go upstairs to change his clothes. He looked at Yu Tong uneasily, but Yu Tong didn’t have the time to acknowledge him; his gaze was fixed unwaveringly on Yu Tang.

They didn’t believe that Yu Tang would dare clarify the situation. However, if he wasn’t going to admit to a relations.h.i.+p with Song Xiao, Song Xiao being taken to threaten Yu Tang into asking the Yu family for help wouldn’t make sense.

“Why did they want to threaten you?” Yu Taixian furrowed his brow. This sentence sounded strange, and Yu Lang’s words suddenly surfaced in his mind, about how this child had some relations.h.i.+p with Song Xiao. However, even he wasn’t sure about this, so how could a criminal like Clem know anything?

“This, we will have to ask second uncle,” Yu Tang narrowed his eyes and said coldly. He raised his hand, and Dugu An pa.s.sed over a cellphone.

When Yu Tong saw that phone, he felt his blood freeze. That was Clem’s phone! With a flash of understanding, he stood up. “Second uncle, Xiao Tang might have some misunderstanding about me, but speaking about it now in front of the police isn’t very appropriate.”

Yu Taixian frowned fiercely. He immediately understood that this involved some scandal which definitely wouldn’t be good for outsiders to know of. He gave Yu Tang a meaningful glance to hint that if it was a Yu family matter, he should downplay it and not disclose it, and only speak after the police left.

At that moment, Yu Tang definitely couldn’t back down. Once the police left, this matter would become nothing more than an internal conflict within the family, and might be downplayed by the family head as nothing more than a minor matter.

Yu Tang ignored them and looked at second uncle with a smile that wasn’t a smile. “This phone is Clem’s. When I escaped, I took his phone, yet I unexpectedly received a call from second uncle. Do you remember what you said?”

Yu Tong’s complexion turned pale, and he forced himself to calmly say, “What a joke. The police have been monitoring my phone the entire time for the past two days; how could I have contacted the kidnappers?”

“Is that so…” Yu Tang paused for a moment, then tapped the phone and pulled up a sound recording which he showed to everyone. “I just knew second uncle wouldn’t admit it, which is why I recorded the call right away.”

The two police officers looked back and forth, completely stunned. What was originally a simple abduction case actually involved a tangled web of grudges within this aristocratic family!

Seeing that there was a recording, Yu Tong’s complexion worsened.

“Second uncle, actually, I already gave grandfather evidence of your criminal activities at the docks. We’re all family, and I wasn’t planning on doing anything to you.” Yu Tang looked at the family head. “Right, grandfather?”

Yu Taixian was stunned, then promptly seemed to understand something, and he glared fiercely at Yu Tong. “Ol’ two, you explain, what’s going on?”

Truthfully, Yu Taixian had known about the docks long ago, but no one had ever really reported it to him. This time, Yu Tang had done very well by merely putting together all the information and presenting it to Yu Taixian deferentially to make a decision, without any intention of attacking his own uncle.

Yu Taixian had initially planned to privately admonish Yu Tong; unexpectedly, Yu Tong had been driven to such desperate action. He kidnapped Song Xiao to threaten Yu Tang to hand over the information, right?

In truth, this wasn’t the case, but Yu Tang had only said half of it, and everyone instantly filled in the blanks: In order to obtain the information that in fact wasn’t particularly important to Yu Tang, Yu Tong bribed the criminals into kidnapping Yu Tang’s best friend to make him hand over the information. This made complete sense.

“Since second uncle was ruthless, then don’t blame this nephew for being faithless.” Yu Tang raised his hand, and standing behind the sofa, Dugu An produced some doc.u.ments that had just been printed out. Yu Tang didn’t even look at them before directly pa.s.sing them to the police officers on the side.

In a fit of fury, Yu Taixian didn’t stop him.

On the other side, third grandfather tugged at Yu Tang. The other Yu family members were somewhat dissatisfied. This business of smuggling in private goods through the docks was something that many people in the Yu family wanted to be a part of. If this matter was investigated, it would be very disadvantageous to the Yu family.

Yu Tang looked at third grandfather, and took out a paper from his pocket which he gave to him. “Actually, that isn’t a serious matter; I believe this is what second uncle truly wanted from me.”

Puzzled, third grandfather unfolded the paper and read it carefully. His wrinkled hands gradually started to tremble, and his breathing gradually sped up.

“Ol’ third, what’s wrong with you?” Seeing that something was wrong with his little brother, Yu Taixian hurriedly took the paper for a look, and his eyes widened in shock. “Xiao Min!”

Yu Min was Yu Tang’s sixth aunt and third grandfather’s daughter, who had died many years ago. Because her death had been a rather ign.o.ble one, third grandfather had forbidden anyone from mentioning her all these years.

“Everyone said sixth aunt fooled around and died from alcohol poisoning and a drug overdose, but that isn’t true.” Yu Tang sighed.

“Yu Tong! You animal!” Fired up, third grandfather stood up and grabbed his cane to beat Yu Tong with it.

What Yu Taixian didn’t know was that Yu Tong’s business on the docks back then wasn’t as simple as smuggling private goods; he had also been involved in trafficking drugs and weapons. Sixth aunt Yu Min found out about this, and second uncle killed her.

The two police saw that the situation wasn’t good, and promptly informed the police station before they arrested Yu Tong right away. It was yet another mess, and by the time everything was settled, the sky was starting to brighten.

When the police exited the main doors of the Yu home, they still felt that it was all some sort of fantasy; they had originally come to investigate an abduction, only to unearth illegal smuggling, which ultimately involved a homicide – there was really a lot of conflict in this aristocratic family!

It seemed that the Yu family was about to descend into chaos once again following Yu Tong’s arrest. Fortunately, Yu Taixian handled it appropriately so that it wasn’t too big of a mess, and he used this opportunity to thoroughly sort out the Yu family.

Since the way things unfolded in the aftermath had been too bizarre, no one paid any more attention to that sound recording. Honestly, Yu Tang never planned on playing it for everyone to hear in the first place, because second uncle had mentioned the word ‘boyfriend’ in this call.

The court hearing went on for a long time since too many matters were involved; finally, there was a verdict before Christmas. This time, no one in the Yu family extended a helping hand, and Yu Tong was ultimately given a life sentence. For some unknown reason, Yu Tong didn’t implicate Yu Lang in the kidnapping.

With the abduction case resolved, Song Xiao continued with his film.

The shooting for ‘Delicacies Fill The Palace Hall’ progressed very smoothly, and Song Xiao still went over every week.

“I have to return to Imperial University next year to study.” Song Xiao looked at the selection of theme songs in his hands, and said to Xiao Zhengqing, “Has Uncle Xiao ever thought of choosing a site in China to shoot some scenes? After all, this is a film with a Chinese theme.”

“That’s an idea.” Xiao Zhengqing smiled. “When you go back, you have to take over management of Xinghai Entertainment as soon as possible.”

“En?” Song Xiao raised his head and looked at him. “Did something happen?”

Xiao Zhengqing looked at him, and was hesitant to speak.

Right at that moment, Yu Tang suddenly gave Song Xiao a call. “I have to return to China right away. Will you come with me?”

Something didn’t sound right about the voice on the other end, and Song Xiao felt fl.u.s.tered for no reason. “What happened?”

“Dad… was in an accident…”

Because second uncle had gone to prison, the power in America had to be redistributed. The family head had told Yu Tang’s father and seventh uncle to come over for a meeting. They should have arrived yesterday, but had yet to show up, and couldn’t be contacted. The family had just received confirmation that the private plane which the two of them had taken had crashed…
