Since Zhen Daoyuan entered the room a while ago, He Zheng had been having a faint sense of threat all along, which made him feel very uneasy. As a result, when Li Zong offered to take him out of this place, he willingly agreed.
The overall layout of the Supernaturalism Management Bureau (SMB) was actually pretty simple. In the midmost area was the United Front Work Department, which doubled as an office building for the whole bureau. On the two sides were living quarters, recreational facilities as well as some other buildings the functions of which were unknown to He Zheng.
Li Zong directly took He Zheng to his own room. The room a.s.signed to Li Zong was far removed from his apartment in the housing district called Century Town. It had only a bedroom, a living room and a bathroom, without any complicated decorative arrangements. The whole room was limited to monochromatic tones of black, white and gray, which didn't bore people easily.
He casually fished a notebook out of the bookcase on the side and handed it to He Zheng. "Here is some information I found not long ago. I didn't find the time to take it home. Now that you are here, you might as well take a look. Ask me if you have any questions."
He Zheng believed that Li Zong had taken leave of his senses. Of all the things Li Zong could have asked him to do, he had chosen to ask him to read. 'Do I really strike him as the kind of person who will read?'
However, before leaving, Li Zong raised his hand, softly pinched He Zheng's cheek, lowered his head and did something that didn't at all sound like what Li Zong would do -- he stooped down and gave He Zheng a bland kiss on the lips. "Be good. Information in this notebook is helpful to you. If you are serious about learning exorcism, you've got to read it carefully."
Words failed He Zheng who was fascinated by Li Zong's charm.
A faint smile appeared in the depths of Li Zong's eyes as he saw the adorable expression on He Zheng's face. "I'll come back to pick you up after the meeting. If there's any particular food you feel like eating, call Tun Shanhai. It's more convenient for him to get in and out of this place. I'll send you his phone number via WeChat."
He Zheng's forehead corrugated in a frown and with that he grabbed Li Zong's collar and gave him a French kiss. There was manifest astonishment on Li Zong's face. Having sensed the inexplicable unhappiness of He Zheng, Li Zong let him.
The two of them kissed for quite a while, and it was not until they were on the verge of being aroused that He Zheng bit Li Zong's lower lip hard, released him and turned his head aside to look out of the window.
Seeing him silently staring out of the window, Li Zong couldn't help but have a smile in his eyes.
After all, Li Zong had a meeting to attend, so he couldn't stay for long. As a result, he pinched He Zheng's cheek again and then walked towards the door. "Behave yourself and read the book."
He Zheng rolled his eyes and ignored him. "Beat it."
Li Zong left.
He Zheng sat on the bed, holding the book that Li Zong had just given him. Strangely enough, He Zheng didn't lost his temper. Instead, he obediently opened the notebook and started reading it, though in a somewhat undignified position.
Childe He casually sat cross-legged on Li Zong's bed and the neat sheet instantly corrugated.
What he was holding in his hands was the most common notebook used for taking the minutes, which consisted of a PU cover and sheets of A4. He Zheng first browsed through it. The contents were someone's handwriting. There were not many words, but all of them were neat and orderly.
In the eyes of He Zheng, whose handwriting was rather poor, Li Zong's handwriting was like that of a calligrapher. 'Who said that an extraordinary playboy like me needs to be good at handwriting? Li Zong doesn't count. He's a freak.'
On the first page was a tale of a supernatural event happened in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD), which seemed to be an extract from the Stories of Immortals(an ancient Chinese fiction) translated into modern Chinese.
It was about an exorcist whose apt.i.tude for exorcism was sealed by magic. Just like He Zheng, the exorcist failed to start cultivation at the best age for it. Later on, one of his magic tools backfired on him, leaving him unable to make the progress that his hard work should bring. In the end, the exorcist seemed to have figured out another way to fix this problem and eventually became a prominent exorcist.
As regards exactly what kind of method he had adopted to make it out of the plight, the answer was not mentioned in the tale. Li Zong had marked this part in red ink and also drawn a question mark below it.
This tale on the first page was followed by different contents, which, surprisingly, were about the Welkin Upender of He family.
Dating back to the ancient times, the Welkin Upender was one of the eight most powerful magic tools of ancient origin. n.o.body knew what kind of good fortune the forebears of He family had chanced to have, but somehow they had gained the ability to seal powerful magic tools with their vital energy.
It was after reading Li Zong's notes that he came to know that the Welkin Upender had been pa.s.sed down from generation to generation, that this unique skill could be mastered by only one member of He family every generation, which n.o.body of He family had ever told him before.
He Zheng couldn't help but think of the pattern of the Welkin Upender on his chest. He had the pattern, which meant that he was the rightful heir of the Welkin Upender, but ironically, during all these years, he had not been taught any spells whatsoever, and neither had He Changchun ever shown any signs of the intention to hand the Welkin Upender over to him.
It suddenly struck He Zheng why Li Zong had asked him to read this notebook. In fact, the reason why He Zheng had requested He Changchun to give him the elementary-level mental cultivation method was because he wanted to master the unique technique of wielding the Welkin Upender. Though unaware of the details of its power, he did know that once he mastered this unique technique, he would be an exorcist matched by very few. Li Zong had given him this notebook to have him know that, given his current physical condition and the objective circ.u.mstances, learning how to wield the Welkin Upender was not his best choice.
He Zheng tossed the notebook aside, crossed his fingers behind his head and lay down on them. The sheet on Li Zong's bed seemed to be giving off faint smell of Li Zong. Even He Zheng himself had never expected that he would suddenly start a relations.h.i.+p with the person he had hated the most. Subtle solicitude shown in an un.o.btrusive way was usually the most touching. He Zheng secretly admitted to himself that he had grown to like this man.
Due to the special magic barrier that the whole SMB was shrouded in, there was no alternation of seasons in this place. Comfortable, pleasant weather always tends to make people sleepy. A genial breeze blew into the room from somewhere and with that, the eyelids of He Zheng, who was doing some aimless thinking, came heavier and heavier. Unconsciously, he drifted off to sleep...
