Chapter Twenty.

The service station was pretty busy but they managed to find a table where they could drink their coffee in relative peace. Vaughn had ordered a bacon sandwich and Elise had gone for a Danish pastry so they were sat waiting for their food order to be brought out.

Their table was next to the window overlooking the motorway so to pa.s.s the time they played the number plate alphabet game, which Vaughn had played as a kid. You took the last three letters of the number plate of the last vehicle that you saw, and had to make up a silly sentence of three words using the letters on the number plate as the first letter of each of the words.

Vaughn started and picked a car with the letters AVS. 'Antelope's Veer Sideways.' He p.r.o.nounced and looked at Elise, seemingly immensely proud of himself.

Elise had BGW and decided on 'Big Green Whales' which caused much amus.e.m.e.nt.

Next Vaughn chose TRU and declared 'Trumpeter's Ride Umbrellas' at which Elise burst out laughing. "How on earth can a trumpeter ride an umbrella?" she asked.

Vaughn shrugged "It's the game it doesn't have to make sense."

"Ok then, if that's how we're playing," Elise said "I'm going for INL 'Igloo's Need Lights!'"

"Igloo's Need Lights?" Vaughn repeated, "There's no electric where igloos are built. How do you suppose they're going to get lights?"

"You're the one that said it didn't have to make sense!" She pointed out, "C'mon, buster you not up the challenge any more, is that what it is?"

"Are you threatening me, Miss Grayson? You ought to know by now that I don't back down from threats. Bring it on!" He wiggled his eyebrows playfully at her and turned back to the road waiting for the next car.

After some really ridiculous sentences from both of them over the following few rounds, Vaughn decided to up the stakes and insisted that any number plate with an E or a V in it, had to figure their names.

Elise got VIK and went slightly risque with 'Vaughn Is Kinky' to which Vaughn countered MEP with 'Me Elise's Prince'. Motioning for a sick bucket after that one, Elise got TEE and stated 'Totally Exquisite Elise' followed by Vaughn with GRV which he made into 'Greatly Ripped Vaughn'. By now they were both in hysterics with tears running down their faces and when the waitress arrived with their food, she looked at them warily, clearly wondering if they needed to be carted off to the nearest asylum.

Reluctant to finish the game, they decided to carry on in-between mouthfuls, Vaughn going for 'Elise Is s.e.xy' when he got EIS, and, waiting for a number plate with a V in it, Elise was finally rewarded with VIB which gave her 'Vaughn Is Big-headed'. Vaughn then watched for a suitable plate for his next one, and when he saw VWE he immediately settled on 'Vaughn Wants Elise'. Seeing the direction that this was headed and wanting to move it onto safer ground, Elise spotted VEB and p.r.o.nounced 'Vaughn Elise's Boss'. To which, when VAM went past, Vaughn stated 'Vaughn All Man' and promptly winked across the table at Elise, his meaning unmistakable.

Realising that they could be potentially moving into very dangerous territory, Elise suggested that they pause the game whilst they finished their food and coffee. Vaughn however was not ready to let it go and Elise had the distinct feeling that he was starting to relish the fact that the game had taken on a different turn.

"How about you just eat your food and let me carry on alone?" he said.

"Ok......" she said intrigued she couldn't imagine he would have much fun playing the game by himself.

She watched as Vaughn waited for the number plates to come past, seeming to know exactly what he was looking for. First of all he got ICB to which he declared 'I Can't Believe' swiftly followed by OWA which was 'One Week Ago'. The next one was IHM 'I Hadn't Met' and then, unbelievably EGG 'Elise Geraldine Grayson'. She raised her eyebrows at that one, clearly believing he had made it up having never seen EGG on a number plate in her life. Nevertheless she found herself totally enthralled by the new way in which he was playing the game and waited patiently, fascinated to see what he would come up with next.

Vaughn carried on watching the cars and picked out NIC which gave him 'Now I Can't' and then INH which was 'Imagine Not Having'; he then slightly dubiously went for EGG again 'Elise Geraldine Grayson' and then finished with IML, 'In My Life'.

During his last few sentences, he had dropped his voice to a ridiculously s.e.xy drawl and as he spoke the last three words he locked his eyes onto hers, their dark depths burning and Elise was fairly certain that she had stopped breathing. Never had she experienced something so intense before and nervously she poked the tip of her tongue out and ran it over her dry lips, watching as his eyes automatically followed the movement and then darkened even further. Her mouth had gone numb, she couldn't form any words and the rest of the world melted away; it was just her and this man and those dark, dark eyes doing unspoken things to her body. She felt her arousal quickening as their eyes remained connected and she crossed her legs under the table in an effort to stave off the feelings. His eyes glinted wickedly and she knew that he had realised the effect he was having on her she was in a hopeless state of excitement and he hadn't even touched her.

Suddenly there was a loud crash from the other side of the restaurant as someone dropped a plate and their moment was instantly broken, both pairs of eyes darting across to the source of the commotion. Elise sent a silent prayer of thanks for the other diner's clumsiness, those precious few seconds allowing her to draw breath and attempt to retain some much needed equilibrium.

Turning back to her after checking out the cause of the noise himself, Vaughn blew out a deep breath and ran his hand somewhat shakily through his hair. It was a tiny movement but Elise noticed it and was thankful to realise that she wasn't the only one affected by their recent game.

"Well..." Vaughn said at length "That was way more fun than I remember it being when I was ten."

Grateful that the intense s.e.xual tension had been broken, Elise smiled and got up to leave the table.

"As I've never played it before, I have nothing to compare it to," she said, "although I don't remember any travelling games I ever played being quite so hot." And giving him a taste of his own medicine, she winked and sauntered away; heading back out to the car park and leaving him to clear the table and follow in her wake.

During the rest of the journey they chatted easily, deciding by unspoken agreement that perhaps it was safer for both of them that they didn't play any more travelling games. There was no residual atmosphere now from when she had stormed out of his office and for that Elise was glad. Vaughn hadn't broached the subject of Cole again and their relations.h.i.+p however if he ever did, she knew that she would tell him the truth. He had no right to dictate her life to her but she had no right to lie to him either. If nothing else, whatever was happening between them needed to be based on honesty and as they were only ever going to be friends in her eyes, then being honest about her relations.h.i.+p with Cole was hardly a big deal.

When they got closer to the hotel, Elise started to question Vaughn on the details of the conference that they were attending; wondering who it was for and what type of client they would encounter.

"It's a conference for stock brokers and investment bankers." He said. "A friend of mine is in the business and tipped me off. Fortunately the hotel owner was more than happy to accommodate us, which means we get to set up right outside the entrance to the conference, allowing us to catch them as they come in and go out. The thing with these types is that they have a lot of money at their disposal, which they invest for their clients. They thrive on the thrill of the investment and can sometimes forget about the tedium of bookkeeping and accounting. I'm hoping that we can persuade a couple of them at least to consider the services that we are able to offer, and if we can sign them up, who knows where it will lead? It should be a win-win for everyone we get new clients who in turn may bring us more business and, for a small fee, they get peace of mind that all of their accounting, bookkeeping and tax records are completely up to date. Some will of course already have arrangements in place and some will carry out their own work; we are aiming for those who are somewhere in the middle and are looking for a one-stop shop. There's also no harm in talking to those with existing arrangements, as we may be able to offer them a more compet.i.tive deal. I am really hoping that this will be a gold mine for Andrews & Andrews. And the beauty of the modern world now is that it doesn't matter if we are not in the same town or even the same country as our client everything can be done online and via e-mail so there are no geographical boundaries at all."

Vaughn was alive with enthusiasm as he talked and Elise found herself getting swept away with it too. She really hoped that she could get at least one positive lead out of the conference; she desperately wanted to prove to Cole that his faith in her was not misplaced and a growing part of her really needed to please this beautiful man sitting beside her as well.

Arriving at the hotel, Elise was surprised to find that it had formerly been a large country house which had been converted into the hotel that it now was. She had expected a more generic box-type modern hotel and was immediately taken with the charm of the place.

The house was old, probably Georgian from the look of the construction, and had modern extensions to both sides. From what she could see there were also several adjacent blocks, likely bedrooms, but they had been built sympathetically and co-ordinated with the original construction perfectly. The grounds appeared to stretch for miles as did the entrance driveway which was screened by large conifers and trees on both sides. The overall effect was real country elegance and, up until today, Elise had had no idea that places like this even existed.

The plaque adorning the wall as they entered the main reception hall dictated that it was a five star hotel and as they stepped inside, she could see why. Everywhere she looked, there were members of staff, immaculately dressed and uniformed. Porters appeared out of nowhere to take their bags and they were personally escorted to an office which had been set aside for their use.

In the middle of the office was a large boardroom table with a dozen comfy chairs around it. On the centre of the table stood a tall cafetiere, silver teapot, milk and creamer jugs, sugar bowl and a plate of what looked to be freshly baked biscuits. There were also several bowls with various mints and sweets in them. Like a kid in a candy shop, Elise pounced on all of the items with wide-eyed enthusiasm.

"Do you think we have to pay for these, Vaughn? The biscuits look delicious and I'm starving!"

Vaughn laughed, "No Elise, you don't have to pay for them - it's part of the service. Have you really never been to anywhere like this before?"

"No I've been in a couple of roadside travel hotels but that's the extent of my experience. I never knew you could get places that were this luxurious."

"Where have you been for the previous conferences then?" he asked.

"Well, usually they only last a day so we don't get to see much of the hotel apart from the main training room and most of those look the same. I've never been anywhere with homemade biscuits before. Usually you just get those packets of cheap and cheerful ones that everyone tries to cram into their pockets to take home."

"And you don't?" he asked sardonically.

"Well.....I might have taken the odd one for the journey home..."she admitted reluctantly and then burst out laughing. "G.o.d, that makes me a thief, doesn't it?"

"You and every other million or so people that attend these things. I think you're fairly safe from arrest on this occasion."

"Phew that's a relief. Although maybe a short jail sentence wouldn't be so bad." She added almost to herself.

Vaughn didn't miss her comment though and frowned but wisely chose not to say anything. Instead he changed the subject.

"So," he said, "the plan for today is to get all the promotional material ready for the stand. I have fliers, posters, price lists, payment plans, terms of agreement and everything else in my car. We need to make up information packs and organise the display. Hopefully that won't take too long and then when the others get here, I'll brief them on the plan for tomorrow." He stopped and glanced across at her.

"I'll just go and get the literature; you can stay here if you like and dig into those biscuits." He winked and walked out of the room chuckling to himself; no doubt at her expense again.

The rest of the afternoon pa.s.sed in a blur of activity and Elise found that she and Vaughn worked well together. Her organisational skills complemented his visionary skills and they soon had the display stand up and ready with eye catching posters and advertising material. Although Elise had done many conferences before, they had never taken this much time and care over the presentation of it and she could see now how much difference it made. All of the information was available at their fingertips and they had paperwork to back up pretty much all of the questions that they would be asked by potential clients. He had even managed to screen off a small side section to allow some privacy, should the client require it.

Their conversation during the day had been light-hearted but there was an unmistakable undercurrent in the room. When Vaughn had ordered some sandwiches for lunch, she had been aware of him watching her mouth as she ate and, at one point, he had reached across and collected a spot of mayonnaise from the side of her mouth with his thumb. He had then proceeded to put that thumb in his mouth and suck on it, cleaning all of the mayonnaise off whilst keeping his eyes firmly on hers. She had thought that she would self-combust there and then. Never had she witnessed such an erotic gesture and it was all she could do to get herself back into work mode for the rest of the afternoon.

The others arrived together around 7pm. They were in high spirits and were equally as impressed with the location as Elise had been. Vaughn briefed them before dinner, giving them the same outline that he had given to Elise earlier in the day and then instructed them to go and change for dinner, which was booked for 8pm.

This was the first chance that Elise had got to get her room key and she was surprised to find that she had a room on her own; she had thought she might have been sharing with Celeste. Instead Celeste and Tilly were sharing as were Sam and Roger, but both she and Vaughn had a room to themselves. Although it struck her as odd, she supposed it made sense in some way as there weren't enough of them to all share rooms, but she couldn't help being a little disappointed a girly night with Celeste would have been a real laugh.

They all headed up to their rooms at the same time, arriving first at the girls' room on the ground floor first, which was a few doors along from the boys' room. Elise and Vaughn had rooms on the first floor but, as he had gone on ahead, she was left to find the stairs and her room on her own.

Opening the door, she gasped as she took in the beauty of the room. It was large with an oak four-poster bed on a raised island in the middle. The bed was facing towards the ma.s.sive picture window which gave a never-ending view of the grounds and the countryside, which was even visible whilst sitting in the bed. Various items of antique furniture provided storage and a small bookcase contained a selection of the latest novels. There was a television with integral DVD player along with a stand up card dictating the myriad of channels available. There were also films; you just had to make your choice and let Reception know and they would arrange for it to be streamed directly into your room. Fresh flowers adorned every surface and on the bed, laid carefully in the middle, were the most luxurious robe and pair of slippers that she had ever seen.

Her bag had been brought up earlier and she couldn't help thinking how out of place her scruffy duffle was in a room as elegant as this. Circling the bed, she headed towards another door that led to an ensuite bathroom. The centrepiece of this was the amazing old-fas.h.i.+oned freestanding bath with clawed feet, which looked large enough to accommodate at least three people. There was also a double shower to one side that had jets at all levels promising to give you the most amazing shower experience.

Elise left the bathroom and gave over to a fit of girly excitement this was totally unbelievable. She had never been anywhere like this and she couldn't believe that the company were happy to pay for this amount of luxury.

Thinking of the company reminded her of Cole and glancing at her watch, she decided she had enough time to give him a quick call before taking a shower and getting ready for dinner.

She located the hotel phone to one side of the bed and following the instructions, managed to get a call through to him on his mobile. She had asked the Receptionist how she went about paying for the call but she had been advised that the use of the telephone was included with the room. She couldn't believe how generous Mr Andrews Snr was being.

Cole answered on the second ring.

"h.e.l.lo?" he sounded dubious, no doubt wondering who it was since he wouldn't have recognised the number.

"Cole! It's me." She squealed "You'll never believe what this hotel is like and you should see the room they have me staying in. It's ridiculous, I've never seen anything like it!"

"Hey, baby I take it you arrived safely then!" She could hear the laughter in his voice at her childish enthusiasm. "How has your day and your road trip with our esteemed MD been?"

"It's been brilliant this place is amazing and we've had a real laugh. Gotta get changed for dinner soon but I really wanted to talk to you I miss you, babe. I so wish you could be here to see this. I've got my own gown and slippers too." She bounced up and down on the bed, fingering the luxurious softness around the lapel of the robe.

"Miss you too sweet-cheeks wish I could w.a.n.gle a trip like that every now and again." She heard only a slight note of envy in his voice; she knew that Cole didn't really enjoy the frontline part of their business and preferred to be the genius in the background. She personally considered that to be a travesty; his looks alone would attract many accounts, of that she was certain.

"Well, you'll just have to pull a few well-placed strings then, won't you?" she said teasingly.

"Mmmm..." he replied unconvincingly. "So, how come you've been having so much fun then? I thought the others weren't arriving 'til later on?"

"They weren't, they've only just arrived. Vaughn and I have spent the day getting the display ready for tomorrow and that guy has a wicked sense of humour. You'd never know it though, he always seems so serious. We're all in our rooms getting ready for dinner now but honestly Cole, I've not laughed so much in ages. He just has a way of making me relax. Of course it helps that he's fairly easy on the eye and we...."

"Elise...slow down..." Cole broke into her endless rant "You do realise what you sound like, don't you?"

Elise took a moment to think through her last few sentences and then groaned.

"Oh G.o.d, I sound like a b.i.t.c.h on heat, don't I?"

"Yep! 'Fraid so!"

"Aaaargghhh......." she said.

"Hey, babe don't worry" he laughed "You have no argument from me where Vaughn's concerned and it's great to hear you happy really great. You deserve this time, Elise grab it with both hands and enjoy it."

"Cole...." she warned, "You know it's not like that it's just been such a fabulous day, I guess I got carried away with the moment." She glanced around quickly for something else to focus on and was once again struck by the luxury of the accommodation she had been given.

"You should see this room though, Cole, it's like something out of a film! How on earth did you ever get Mr Andrews Snr to pay for all of this?"

Cole didn't reply and when the silence lengthened, Elise began to get concerned that he had been cut off.

"Cole..? Can you hear me? You still there?"

"Yeah babe, I'm here." He sighed. "It's just that there's stuff I wasn't supposed to tell you but you know I can't lie to you. I don't know what to say."

"What do you mean? What weren't you supposed to tell me?"

Another silence and then Cole spoke again.

"The hotel, the rooms they weren't organised by the company Vaughn organised it all."

"Yeah I know that, babe" she said, surprised that Cole was making such a big deal out of something so unimportant. "He told me that he had a friend who tipped him off about the conference and managed to square things with the manager here."

"That's true but that's not the whole story" Cole sighed, "Have you seen the rooms that the other's have, Elise?"

"Yes all apart from Vaughn's. Why?"

"And didn't it strike you how different your room was to theirs?"

"I guess so. But they are on the ground floor and I am on the first so I just a.s.sumed that the rooms were different on each floor. Plus, I have a double bed and they have twin beds although they are nowhere near as grand. Their views are the car park, I think I have the most amazing view of the grounds from up here." She was rambling again and when she realised, she abruptly came to a stop.

"Elise," Cole said patiently "The reason that your room is different - better from the others is not because you are on the first floor. There are all types of different rooms on all of the floors."

"Ok......so I have a bigger room...maybe that's all they had available?" she said, not really understanding why there should be any great significance applied to this fact.

"No, Elise you don't have a bigger room because that was all they had available. You have a bigger room for one reason only." He paused and then continued.

"Your room has been upgraded and paid for by Vaughn personally. Not the company." He waited a moment as if allowing that little nugget of information to sink its way in. "As far as Mr Andrews Snr is concerned, you have the same accommodation as everyone else. Vaughn went behind his back to arrange that room for you; I'm the only one here who knows about it." Cole sighed.

"Vaughn Granger is why you have such an 'amazing' view - and that is what I wasn't supposed to tell you."

Chapter Twenty-One.

The conversation with Cole had unsettled her and Elise struggled to make sense of it all whilst she showered and changed.

Why would Vaughn pay extra for her room? She supposed there were lots of possible reasons but it wasn't as if she was the most senior member of staff there. Both Tilly and Sam had been at the company way longer than she had surely they deserved the upgrade?

But then why would Vaughn pay for it out of his own pocket? Surely he could have saved himself the money and just gone with the standard accommodation it was only for one night after all.

Deciding that the only way she was ever going to find out was to ask him, Elise slipped on her heels, took one final look in the mirror and exited her room to head back downstairs to dinner. She was wearing her calf-length oriental-style black dress and she absolutely loved the feel of it as it swished against her legs. She was wearing lacy hold up stockings as she didn't want there to be any visible lines from her usual tights under the dress and whilst she had been in the shower she had taken the time to have a shave a luxury she rarely afforded herself, particularly in the winter. She was feeling good and happy with how she looked.

The dress wasn't tight but it had a fitted bodice which skimmed across and under her b.r.e.a.s.t.s emphasising their fullness, and the skirt flared out a little with the material then flowing around her legs. She knew she was no model figure and that she had curves where perhaps she shouldn't but overall she was generally content with her appearance. To be honest, she rarely had time to consider what she looked like so to have the opportunity to pamper herself a little was like a forbidden luxury.

She had tied her hair up in a loose bun to accommodate the high neck of the dress and fastened in her favourite blue and black jewelled earrings a birthday present from her parents which picked out the blue in her eyes and the black of the dress. She had no idea what the others would be wearing to dinner as she'd not had chance to ask them but she hoped that she had judged the dress code right.

Entering the bar, she scanned the tables, wis.h.i.+ng that she had taken the trouble to arrange to walk down with Celeste and Tilly rather than having to walk in completely alone. A few heads turned as she entered, the bar at this pre-dinner time being quite full. Presumably many of the conference attendees had also travelled down the night before and she pushed past numerous smartly suited men before she finally spotted her group huddled together over in one corner. Relieved, she headed in their direction.
