VOLUME 9 CHAPTER 8: DON’T TELL ME THIS IS THE AWAKENING OF LIU BEI (1)

Liu Bei POV

I slowly opened my tightly shut eyes as I felt the warmth of sunlight coming in from the window. When I looked up, I saw a pale white ceiling with a rather dirty 3-blade fan hanging motionlessly from it.

Is this… A hospital?

It took all of my cognitive power and a good deal of time before I was able to recognise what the red cross sign and the various contraptions nearby meant.

Then what I went through before, everything I saw, what was all that?

Was it… A dream?

I seemed to have seen a dream of sorts. A dream where I found myself in the Three Kingdoms era and took the place of the virtuous Liu Bei. That seemed a little too realistic for a dream though. In comparison to what I saw in the dream, what I’m seeing before me now feels less like reality.

Ah… What a long dream… Now that I think about it, it feels like a year has pa.s.sed.

But why am I in a hospital? Could it be that I met with a car accident of sorts just like in the tv serials? Or perhaps I came down with something.

So why was I out for so long?

*Giiyaa*

The door was pushed open and I was a little slow to react as I was still in a daze.

When I looked over, I saw a nurse who was wearing a mask pus.h.i.+ng in a trolley from the outside. Thereafter, another 2 nurses came in as well.

Of the 3, the figure of the nurse who was the first to come in was the best and was elegant to boot too. The other 2 behind weren’t bad either. In fact, I must say that the quality of nurses in this hospital is perhaps the highest I’ve ever seen. In my impression, nurses are typically 40 year old aunties.

“How is your condition?” She asked before she made it to my side.

“Ah… Un, I’m fine.” I was still in a daze but I nodded as I felt that I was alright. At the very least, I haven’t lost my memories at all and I remember my parents’ names, my own name, age and other experiences.

“What’s your name?”

“Ah, I’m Liu Bei Liu Xuan De.”

Wu! I got a shock from the words that came out of my mouth and hurriedly covered my mouth. When I looked up at the 3 frowning nurses, I did my best to show an expression of shock and disbelief at what I just said.

As for the nurses, they first frowned at what I said before smiling. Even though they were wearing masks, I could still clearly see that they were smiling.

“You said you were Liu Bei? Hahaha.” The nurse at the front said as she laughed and then looked at the other 2 who chimed in as well.

“If you’re Liu Bei, then I’m Lu Bu~”

“Yes, yes and I’m Zhao Yun too~”

When I heard their laughter, I felt terrible and wanted to find a hole and bury myself.

“Never mind, we’ll just do our job and stop making fun of you.” The nurse at the front said as she pulled the cover off the trolley, showing layers and layers of pill bottles, “Come, it’s time for your medicine.”

“This is…”

I can’t identify any of these pills at all nor what they are supposed to do. In the first place, I don’t even know what I’ve contracted or how I came to be here.

“Umm, can you first tell me what I have contracted?”

“You?” She said and looked at me for a moment before telling me in a somewhat melancholic tone, “You have delusional disorder and you have to stay here and receive treatment.”

Eh? Delusional disorder? Only after repeating it in my head over and over did I understand what that meant.

“Have I…

Got some sort of mental disease?”

“If you have to put it that way, yes.” The nurse nodded and grabbed some pills.

“Come, open up.” Another nurse said as she grabbed my chin and yanked open my mouth in one swift motion.

Uwaa~~ Just then terror struck me and the more I looked at the 3 nurses, the more sinister they seemed and I began flailing about.

“Uwaa!!”

“d.a.m.n you! Stop thras.h.i.+ng about!” The nurse yelled as she stuffed the pills into my mouth

Wu!

In the next instant, I felt like my mouth was completely filled up.

“Don’t be so hasty, there’s more~”

Wu!!

Immediately after I heard those words, more pills were stuffed into my mouth and my chin felt like it was going to be dislocated. Soon, I began to feel like I was suffocating from some pills that had lodged into my throat and struggled even harder.

Ah!

“Aiya!”

I lashed out and grabbed at the nurse who’d held my chin but she was nimble and dodged to the back so all I managed to grab was her mask.

Eh?! The nurse’s face seemed very familiar and I was quite sure that I’d seen her somewhere before.

“… You’re… Yun Chang?” I asked softly. This was more instinctive than purposeful as those words came blurting out the moment I looked into her eyes.

At the same time, the other 2 became very calm and removed their masks.

“… Feng Xian… And Zi Long?” I softly called out. In reality, I still didn’t know who those 2 names were supposed to refer to and was just reciting whatever came to mind.

These names, they seem so familiar… Like they’re the names of famous historical figures. My knowledge of history isn’t so good so I can’t quite remember what they are.

“Big brother,” Just then, the first nurse looked at me and spoke in a kind voice, “We’re waiting for you, won’t you come back soon?”

Eh? What… Who’s waiting for me?

Who am I?

I’m–

Liu Bei?

Wu!

In the next instant, a strong suffocating sensation spread out from my lungs and I felt myself swirling about as though I were buffeted by a strong water current. I kept my eyes shut tight, not knowing where I was. All I knew was that I wasn’t in a hospital anymore.

My mind was a mess and it felt like I was burning from the inside out. My heart raced and my breathing was ragged. Yet, the thought that I might be drowning made me try to minimise my breathing as much as I could…

“Calm down. It’s fine, you can breathe.”

Haa–

I don’t know where the voice came from but I heeded its advice anyway and took 2 deep breaths which confirmed that I wasn’t at the bottom of the river.

I then forced my eyes open and looked up at the wooden ceiling. There was no white ceiling, nor was there a 3-bladed fan. Looks like I’m not in a hospital, nor am I back in my era.

… Which means that what I just saw was a dream huh…

My head felt faint and I shut my eyes tight once more. I still can’t quite comprehend more complicated things yet in this current state of mine.

“How do you feel?” A hollow voice came from the side. My ears were still blocked so I couldn’t hear well enough and my vision was blurry as well.

“I don’t feel so good.”

Wu… When I licked the inside of my mouth, I could taste the stench of the sea mixed in with blood which made for a rather disgusting mix that made feel the urge to retch.

“Is that so? Well, that’s about right.” The voice continued, “No one can be in a coma for more than a week and still feel well.”

Eh?

“Umm, what did you just say?” I didn’t dare to believe what I’d just heard and struggled to move my sore arms to clear my ears and arched my neck to listen closely.

“10 days. You’ve been out cold for a full 10 days.” The person repeated himself. I don’t know who, what, where, when and how yet but it sounds like a male voice.

I’ve been out for 10 days… What has–

*Ta* *Ta* *Ta*

While I was still collecting my thoughts, the sound of footsteps came from the side. They were light and didn’t seem like those of a man.

“Umm, you’re–” I spoke up with my eyes still closed. But before I could finish, or hear a reply, I felt some unknown object being placed on my forehead, “Ah! It’s so cold!”

“Stop moving about, your body is still very weak.”

I tried to get up but a soft, small hand placed on my chest stopped me and I soon gave up.

“Don’t be so anxious, it’s just a piece of wet cloth.” That person added.

From the voice, this person should be a woman. Her voice is still a bit high so she shouldn’t be old, probably even younger than me. But her voice wasn’t childish in the least and had a slight tinge of maturity.

“Ah… Many thanks.” I said as I saluted her, “I do indeed feel much better after having the cold towel.”

“You should thank my disciple.” Just as I finished, the male voice could be heard from in front of me, “If it weren’t for her spotting you at the river and pulling you out, you and that treasured horse of yours would have ended up in the netherworld by now.”

Ah! I finally remembered what happened to me when I heard what the man said.
