May 10, 1919

PREAMBLE

For G.o.d and Country we a.s.sociate ourselves together for the following purposes:

To uphold and defend the Const.i.tution of the United States of America; to maintain law and order; to foster and perpetuate a one hundred per cent. Americanism; to preserve the memories and incidents of our a.s.sociation in the Great War; to inculcate a sense of individual obligation to the community, state, and nation; to combat the autocracy of both the cla.s.ses and the ma.s.ses; to make right the master of might; to promote peace and good will on earth; to safeguard and transmit to posterity the principles of justice, freedom, and democracy; to consecrate and sanctify our comrades.h.i.+p by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.

ARTICLE I

_Name_

The name of this organization shall be THE AMERICAN LEGION.

ARTICLE II

_Members.h.i.+p_

All persons shall be eligible to members.h.i.+p in this organization who were in the military or naval service of the United States during the period between April 6, 1917, and November 11, 1918, both dates inclusive, and all persons who served in the military or naval services of any of the governments a.s.sociated with the United States during the World War, provided that they were citizens of the United States at the time of their enlistment, and are again citizens at the time of application, except those persons who separated from the service under terms amounting to dishonorable discharge and except also those persons who refused to perform their military duties on the ground of conscientious or political obligation.
