"He's my friend. I don't want you 'contaminating' him with your dirty paws. And, there's only less than seventeen minutes left, are you done with your 83rd copy of action report?"
"Ugh…… you always remind me of the cruel reality……" Maya stroke his long hair conceitedly, "I get a feeling Boss's jealous of me today. He rarely gets serious over trivial things like these doc.u.ments and paperwork."
"Jealous of you over what?" Reeve sneered, "Are you dim-witted?"
Maya raised his brows and said confidently, "I think it's my hair!"
Reeve was completely speechless.
Base 2, a base used solely for research, is extremely boring. There was nothing except for research center and the army that garrison the base.
Xiao Yan slept through the morning before heading to the cafeteria when lunchtime was nearly over. As the only student that survived, he had no one to speak to, to divert himself from boredom. All he could do, was to wait for another research aircraft to transit here in order for him to leave this place.
Suddenly, a pair of hands covered his eyes from behind, a smiling voice breathed against Xiao Yan's ear, "Guess who?"
"Reeve?" Xiao Yan raised his head in suspicion. Reeve does not seem to be someone who would make this sort of joke, but the voice was definitely Reeve's.
"Did you miss me?"
The person behind him drawled as Xiao Yan subconsciously held his breath. He could feel the nearing presence, and the breath brus.h.i.+ng across his lips.
Xiao Yan clenched the person's arms, attempting to pull away the palms that were covering his eyes. A teasing laughter rang in the air, "Well then, who do you think I am?"
"Officer Maya."
"And I thought I mimicked Reeve's voice perfectly."
Judging by his features, he is certainly Maya, still with a smile on his face, but showing a seasoned temperament and shrewdness that did not exist when Xiao Yan first met him.
He raised one leg and sat on the table, looking down at Xiao Yan, "Hey, you seem bored, how about a date with me?"
The battle suit hugged Maya's fine figure seamlessly. As he raised his hand and gave a flick on Xiao Yan's nose tip, Xiao Yan could see the tightening of his shoulder muscles clearly.
"And to think that I had thought of him as a s.e.xy, beautiful creature…… Goodness! That was patently absurd!"
"N-No thank you……" Xiao Yan took his food tray and was about to stand up but was stopped by Maya, placing a hand on his shoulder. Not much force was exerted from the look of it, but Xiao Yan found himself trapped.
"My dear, whatever Reeve said about me, they're just rumours."
Xiao Yan scanned around the cafeteria, to find that the officers that were once eating had all left.
His heart went cold. It was obvious that Maya was not up to something good.
"At this moment, I don't think they're rumours," Xiao Yan s.h.i.+fted his eyes from Maya. He knows he had to stay away from him, otherwise, if this guy were to possess any ill intentions, he won't be able to fend against Maya's enticement with his feeble willpower.
"Trust me, you'll definitely have an unforgettable experience with me," Maya's mouth trailed to Xiao Yan's earlobe and bit gently.
The shuddering sensation caused Xiao Yan to hunch his shoulders, his went heart racing, and the sound of breathing became more and more apparent.
He knows Maya was using his same old trick again, and soon he would be having those embarra.s.sing delusions. Yet, his struggle was futile.
Just as Xiao Yan bellowed internally, a strong force clutched onto his right arm and dragged him away forcefully, the clas.h.i.+ng sound of the tray that fell onto the floor rang across the cafeteria.
The hovering senses returned to its place, Xiao Yan found himself a few steps away from the table.
Maya, who was sitting at the edge of the table, had a look of surprise, before jumping up from his seat and stood to attention. His eyes looked across Xiao Yan's shoulder, his coquettish behaviour vanished, solemnly, he said: "Boss."
Xiao Yan's shoulder tensed, his heart shuddered as he recalled the crus.h.i.+ng pain of his fractured shoulder. He did not dare to turn back, until an icy voice sounded.
"Officer Maya, an attacked was reported on platform 62, three A ranked apprentices waiting for rescue."
"I'll head over immediately!" Maya saluted and walked away briskly without looking back.
One moment, Xiao Yan was still troubling to get rid of this fella, and the next moment, this fella had disappeared without hesitation.
Wait a minute…… There's another big trouble right behind me—— Heine Burton!
"Come with me," before Xiao Yan could catch a glimpse of his face, Heine turned and walked away.
"The same commanding tone again. Even if you're a Colonel, but I'm a student from the Science Academy! You and I are not even in the same unit!" Xiao Yan grumbled silently.
He followed Heine through the pa.s.sageway with b.u.t.terflies in his stomach.
What does he want me to do?
This was the first time for Xiao Yan to see a view of Heine's back that was walking in a slower pace. Every steps he took are filled with strength while intervened with a touch of elegance.
He stopped before a door of a research lab and unlocked the door with his fingerprint.
Xiao Yan was uncertain whether he could follow him in, as he does not possess the qualification of a researcher, nor is he an A ranked student.
Xiao Yan froze for a second and stepped into the lab.
As the light lit up, Xiao Yan realised that it was not a lab, but a repair workshop for weapons. Numerous cold weapons exclusively used by Special Force soldiers were stored within the a.r.s.enal by the wall.
With just a touch on each of them, the hologram would glance off, revealing the weapon's name, the user, as well as its damage data. Despite of the impairments, these weapons that had slayed countless zombies, reflected a piercing glare that could slash apart one's soul.
"Ha?" Xiao Yan was stupefied.
Without further explanation, Heine left the room.
When the door slid close, Xiao Yan nearly rebuked out loud.
What the–! I am on furlough! Why do I need to repair all these weapons?! Aren't there professional mechanics for them! Why is it me? You should do it yourself for something as important as this instead of asking me, a total rookie who just entered a weapon repair workshop for the first time, for help!
Xiao Yan picked up a rotary dart and began imagining Heine leaping into the air and releasing the rotary dart. Spikes sprung out from the flying dart and as it hits the snarling zombie, all its parts loosened and scattered……
All because of Xiao Yan for being a terrible cold weapon mechanic……
"What a ludicrous scene it will be!" Xiao Yan thought in defeat.
If something like that happened, he would have to stretch his neck, waiting for Heine to wring it. No….. Maybe worst. Heine would pull out his bones, one by one, and make him listen to the snapping sound of his bones!
Xiao Yan was getting anxious from the thought of it.
"I don't wanna die! Not at all! Alright, I've got to get all of these weapons fixed seamlessly!" he said to himself, finally getting focused.
And when a person are determined to get a thing done, his attentiveness would be astonis.h.i.+ng.
This form of dart were made of high-density t.i.tanium. Two hundred years ago, it would have been a difficult task to extract t.i.tanium from ore, nonetheless to forge from it. However, with the fast advancement of technology, all kinds of alloys are now vastly utilised in the creation of weapons and artificial body parts. Surely, the name Rotary High-density t.i.tanium Dart was awfully long and tacky, so the Special Force soldiers usually called them —— "Silverwings".
The twelve "Silverwings" that Xiao Yan was repairing, are Reeve's. Recalling the das.h.i.+ng look Reeve had when using them, he was hyped up in mending them for her, even if it was trifling.
First off, the crucial issues of these "Silverwings" were the targeting and retrieving function. Its initial design had inserted an ingenious positioning device where the released "Silverwing" could automatically retract its spikes and return to its slot when the user pressed the return b.u.t.ton on the weapon slot.
After a.n.a.lysing, Xiao Yan noticed that the positioning device was faulty. He fixed the impairment and readjusted the spikes' distances of each "Silverwings" to enhance their destructibility.
Seeing the attack of the repaired "Silverwings" increased by five percent after a simulation test, Xiao Yan let out a satisfied grin for his accomplishment.
However, what he does not know was that every research labs comes with an observation room, and Lieutenant Colonel Raven was standing behind the gla.s.s with his hands folded, deep in thought, "You should know that the headquarter had given orders, where Special Task Forces are required to bring along a technical soldier appointed by the Central Academy of Science."
"So?" Heine Burton's cold mechanical voice sounded from behind.
"So, for tomorrow's mission, I'll be appointing a technical soldier for you."
Lieutenant Colonel Raven gave a soft knock at the gla.s.s, and said with a sly smile: "What about Xiao Yan?"
Heine came to a halt in front of the sliding door, his lowered brows concealed his emotions, "He's just an apprentice."
"Well, all apprentices are reservists, what's more, with your 'I won't take responsibility for their safety' sort of manner, not a single technical soldier in the base is willing to conduct mission with your team. But if it's Xiao Yan, you've saved him once, so, for twice or thrice, you definitely won't watch him die-"
Heine had left the room before Raven could finish talking.
"Hey—— Colonel Burton! I have quite high hope on that kid, remember to bring him back alive!"
On that afternoon, during the Special Task Forces training, Maya's shriek pierced through the room.
"Boss! M-My arms—–Arms——"
The block of ice lowered his head with an unfazed look on his face, precise but ruthless.
"I-I'm dying—— Boss! S-seriously— Dying!" Maya screamed with tears in his eyes.
Mark crouched down on the ground, resting his chin on his hand, "Maya seems to get picked on quite often recently, is it because of his garish hair?"
Reeve hmphed softly, "He can throw away his life, but never his hair."
"Oh come on…… clinging onto hair and stuff is just too unmanly!" Mark shook his head in disapproval, "If he wanna stop Boss from tormenting him, it's best for him to cut off his long hair."
"Perhaps, it's not about the hair……" Reeve breathed out a sigh and plugged her ears with her fingers, as Maya uttered another unnerving scream when Heine dislocated his left leg.
