Hidden Inside The Academy Chapter 1

CHAPTER I

Gein and Sveta

 

05:50 am

I have been awake since earlier; I'm just waiting for my bedside alarm clock to ring. I'm currently looking at the ceiling of the room I've been staying for four years.

What can even happen today? Get up, eat, go to cla.s.s, leave my homework untouched, and finally go to sleep again.

Typical.

That has been my routine since grade school. It's not like I'm complaining.  I much prefer it that way, all I do is expected, predictable.

06:00 am

I drag myself to the bathroom. I'm so used to waking up early in the morning but I don't know why my body still won't get used to being drenched in cold water around this same time.

All the hair in my body goes taut of gooseb.u.mps, except, of course, for the one above and the other below. The water is really cold; I should have a heater. Why is this school bias? Only the high ranking students have fancy rooms. Also, when I say rooms―bedroom, living room, cla.s.sroom, bathroom and above all, they also have a leisure room.

It's not that I envy them; it would be easier if that's the case. I step out of the shower and wrap a towel around me.

I check my school uniform first; it’s mandatory that every student wears appropriate uniform inside the campus; specifically to identify who are the students and who are not. When I'm done, I look at myself in the mirror and adjust the ribbon on my chest that's somewhat crooked.

It's cold season now so the uniform should have long-sleeves. This uniform is a black top with a white collar and sleeves and the bottom is a gray skirt with two inches above the knee length. I wear white socks that reach my knees and flat doll shoes.

I look at myself in the mirror once again and then reach for the comb which has some strands all over. While combing, I touch the ends of my hair.

Yeah, my hair.

I might have split ends; it would be a waste to have this beautiful hair. I put down my comb and check the time.

06:40 am

I have twenty minutes left before all the students leave their rooms. I have to quickly eat breakfast in the Dining Hall before anyone does; I'm not used to the crowd, especially to the noise so I wake up this early in the morning.

When I left the room, there are still no people around. All the rooms are soundproofed so I can't really hear a thing. The only noise around is my footsteps.

The dining hall is the only place where Gein and Sveta meet.

Gein means Black and it's evident in our uniform. Geins are students who have common abilities or powers that we call Sceill. Examples are speed, motion, invisibility, teleportation etc.

Sveta means White and the students also wear white uniform exactly opposite to ours. Svetas are those students that are considered high rankings. They have the Sceill (power) of elements, time, s.p.a.ce and predicting the future. They are those with very rare abilities. Thus, they are protected by Hiso, or those who we consider the government.

If anyone will ask, yes, I wear Gein's uniform but I do not have a single ounce of the usual sceill or power and nothing of that sort like of Sveta's. I’m a freak here, powerless. Though having power is never a requirement to enter this Academy, it’s an unwritten rule that if you have no power you are considered nothing.

My Mom and Dad have sceill like many others. I don't know why I don't have any. I thought maybe I'm just a late bloomer.

(ED: late bloomer=slow to mature)

Usually, from twelve years old sceill will start to manifest to people like us but until now, I'm already eighteen years old, still with no sceill. I am considered as Scapes or a Sceillian whose power skipped over him/her. Scapes like me are very rare. We are considered cursed because we are not blessed with sceill. I'm really unlucky.

So, as much as possible and to the best of my ability, I don't mingle with others. I always avoid everyone because I know I will only be bullied if they see me.

"Cenedy, are you okay? I've been calling you."

I didn't notice that Dreiya is talking to me. She manages the Dining Hall, thus, every day I meet her since I eat early breakfast.

"Ah yes, good morning Dreiya."

I place a genuine smile on my face. She is one of my sceillian friend. She does not care if I have a sceill or not and that's what I like about her.

"Here's your meal, hurry since the others are coming."

She hands me a tray of food. She personally prepares my food. I feel special when I'm with her; as if, she's a second mother to me.

“Thanks, Dreiya."

“You’re always welcome, dear.”

I sit at the table near the exit of the Dining Hall so that I can get out quickly. Before I put the spoon in my mouth I look around first in the whole Dining Hall. The Hall is really huge. My eyes stop at another door of the Dining Hall. Someone is standing there. I don't know who it is. I also can't make out if he is a Gein or Sveta because the light illuminated his back and all I can see is his whole frame.

Oh, he went back inside? He even turned to the right. Thus, I realized, he is a Sveta..The dorm of Geins is on the left side, just opposite to Sveta. Why would he then go back to his dorm?

I hasten to eat and hurriedly go out. After my meal, I walk away from the hall and once again hear the solitary noise from my shoes and footsteps.

"Cenedy!"
