Futuristic Era, year 3798.

The maglev train car stopped on its high-speed tracks without a sound, the slight inertia made Ling Wei aware that he’s reached his destination, opening the car door, he stepped outside.

In front of the magnificent building, motion detecting lights lit up quietly, illuminating the tall approaching figure.

Slender and graceful, the way he carried himself was in line with all the criterion for firm resoluteness and rationality.

And that, is what’s currently being commended by the common people as a soldier’s rightful att.i.tude.

But the clean pressed and meticulous military academy uniform, as well as the handsome, youthful face that lies in a phase between manhood and boyhood, was enough to show that the person with such an outstanding soldierly demeanour was but a cadet still studying at the military academy.

“Mister Wei, it’s me, Ling Wei.” Ling Wei chose not to use the usual doorbell to the house, and instead used the small buzzer that’s generally utilized by the servants inside the building to communicate.” Please help me open the door.”

When the military academy informed him of his ten-day leave, Ling Wei immediately set off for home.

After a long journey, it was already dark outside when he arrived home, his ill-healthed mother should already be asleep, and he didn’t want to wake her up at this hour.

“Yes of course Young Master Ling Wei.” Mister Wei answered through the speakers.

Soon the magnificent yet forbidding doors to the general’s mansion was opened from the inside.

The not overly extravagant, but still elegant and pleasantly awe-inspiring front hall basked under the warm lights, slowly revealing itself to Ling Wei as the doors opened gradually.

Their butler Mister Wei stood in front of Ling Wei, neatly attired, “Young Master Ling Wei, on break from the military academy?”

“Mhm, ten days.” Politely refusing Mister Wei’s offer to a.s.sist with his luggage, Ling Wei walked into the mansion.

Having received militarized education since his childhood, his belongings were very simple, consisting of only a few necessary changes of clothes. All of this was partly in the blood he inherited from his father that died in action on the battlefield, and partly due to the years of careful grooming from his adoptive father, one of the top tier generals of The Federation.[1]

Intending to walk back to his room unnoticed, he was walking up the stairs when he saw the frame of a delicate figure that he most certainly did not want to disturb.

“Mom?” Ling Wei froze for a moment from the surprise, his brows slightly crinkled.” Did I wake you? I’m sorry.”

“I was already up. And thank goodness I was, otherwise I wouldn’t even have known that you were back.” Mrs. Ling walked over lovingly, and looked over at her eldest son who has been away at the military academy for a whole year. Then said to him with a reproachful tone, “Ling Wei, you always treat me like such an outsider, it makes me feel bad.”

“No.” Ling Wei looked both touched and a little uneasy, then he explained gently, “Mom, I just didn’t want to wake you since it’s so late. I was planning to go over and talk to you in the morning. You see, as soon as I’ve been notified of my ten days off from the academy, I packed up and left immediately to come back. By the way, how come you are still up so late?”

“It’s because someone woke me up.” Seeing the familiar look of guilt he had since childhood emerging from the face of her increasingly more handsome adoptive eldest son, Mrs. Ling immediately smiled and consoled him, “It’s not you, it’s that boy Ling Qian.”

“Ling Qian? He’s back? His military academy gave him time off as well?”

Upon mentioning this, Mrs. Ling couldn’t help but to remember the headache-worthy problem with her second son, and sighed quietly.”That boy, if only he was a third as good as you and listens to me.”

“What’s wrong?”

“He was expelled.”

Ling Wei was surprised to hear this, “How come?”

Unlike Ling Wei, his younger brothers Ling Qian and Ling Han were of n.o.ble lineage. The biological twin sons inherited the blood of General Ling Cheng Yun and his equally high-born wife Mrs. Ling.

In an era of military ruling where bloodlines and familial backgrounds decided one’s fate, Ling Qian and Ling Han by virtue of their own advantageous backgrounds, were naturally granted entrance into Zheng s.h.i.+ Military Academy, also known as “the creation place of generals”.

It was a place similar to the royal family college during the feudal era, graduating from there meant ascending directly into the upper military powers of The Federation.

And because of this, the conditions for gaining entrance to the academy was very harsh. Even for Ling Wei, who was General Ling Chen Yun’s eldest son to the outside world, but not his biological child, couldn’t enter.

However, the Zhen Di Military Academy Ling Cheng Yun hand picked for his eldest son was also one of the best schools The Federation has for high-ranking senior military officers.

“Why did he get expelled?”

Upon being asked about this, Mrs. Ling’s face took on a sad expression, “Let’s not talk about that, he’s expelled either way. Your dad’s at the federal commission dealing with military affairs and hasn’t been back in days, but he’s been notified of this already, and had just called back to give Ling Qian a good scolding. You are his older brother Ling Wei, help your mom out and talk some sense into him. He’s such a smart boy and he was doing so well in everything at the academy, why is he suddenly doing something so irrational? You two are similar in age, so it should be easier for you to talk to him.”

“Yes, mom.”

Hearing Ling Wei’s sincere and earnest reply made Mrs. Ling a little emotional, wis.h.i.+ng that this son of hers was also her own.

Despite not being related by blood, she always loved Ling Wei very much in her heart. Not only because Ling Wei’s father died in action while following under her husband’s command, but also because after they adopted Ling Wei she miraculously gave birth to the twins after many years of infertility.

This was good news for the Ling clan, as well as for the gradually more nepotistic high-ranking federal military officials that was starting to pa.s.s down their military powers from father to son, and viewed blood lineage with great importance.

Deep down in Mrs. Ling’s heart, she always felt that the arrival of her adopted son was what led to her finally giving birth to her own two sons.

Mrs. Ling stroked Ling Wei’s face lovingly, “It must be hard being at the academy, every time I see you I always think you’ve gotten thinner. You must be hungry getting home so late at night. Let me fix you up something to eat, you haven’t tasted mom’s homemade cooking in quite a while now, right?”

“No, I’m not hungry at all.” Not wanting his mother to cook for him so late at night, Ling Wei decisively refused, and smiled as he told the little white lie, “Mom, the academy prohibits eating late at night, I’ve made a habit of it already. I’ve got no appet.i.te right now.”

“Really?”

“Really.”

“Well then.”

“Why don’t you go to sleep mom. I’ll make sure to eat everything you cook tomorrow.”

Ling Wei personally took Mrs. Ling’s arm in his, walking the person who’s cared for him for all these years back to her bedroom, after saying good night to her and carefully closing the door to her boudoir, Ling Wei carried his suitcase back to his room.

Being able to be taken in by the well respected general and his wife after both of his parents’ death was one of the greatest blessings in Ling Wei’s life.

He didn’t know how he ended up being so lucky, since tens and thousands of soldiers die every year in their war with The Empire,[2] and their orphans were usually taken to the national welfare agencies.

But The Federation’s supreme military commander, General Ling adopted him. Of course, the reason was because, at the time Mrs.Ling had already had several miscarriages and was unable to give birth to a baby. But Ling Wei still felt that he was very lucky.

His room was on the topmost floor of the general’s mansion, the huge s.p.a.ce was divided into three giant suites, with top of the line equipment and furnis.h.i.+ngs. There was no differential treatment between him and his two younger brothers. Himself, Ling Qian and Ling Han each had their own suite.

It’s just that in accordance with Ling Cheng Yun’s wishes, the three brothers were all sent off to either Zhen Di or Zheng s.h.i.+ military boarding school, only returning annually during short holiday breaks.

Therefore, the three highly advanced suites stocked with all the high-tech gadgets wanted by almost any federation youth often sits vacant. The amount of time it gets used by its owners were very limited.

Politely declining Mister Wei’s attentive service, Ling Wei opened the door to his room with his own specialized keycard.

Closing the door behind him and leaving the suitcase by the door, Ling Wei was about to take off the neatly fastened military academy tie from around his neck, when he suddenly felt alarmed.

His sharp gaze swept across the room and fell on the bed.

“So you really are back.” Something moved under the sheets, and a slightly boyish, but already quite handsome and attractive face stuck out from beneath the covers. Ling Qian with his shoulder-length black hair looked at the person walking in through the door with knitted brows, “Brother, you’ve kept me waiting for so long.” His tone was unpleasant.

Perhaps it was due to the general’s blood running through his veins, a somewhat sharp coldness seeped through his youthful gaze.
