Chapter 1
It was the Plum Rain Season, endless fog stretched out, the pattering of the rain seemed as though it would never end. *Drip… drip… drip…* n.o.body was able to escape boredom.
Rong Jiahui listened to the soft sound of the rain while sitting on a shaky cart, preparing. She was heading to the city gates to welcome the important general, Zhong Li Luo, as he triumphantly returned. Zhong Li Luo had lived in her family for over a decade now. Her father and mother had always treated him as their own son, and he was considered to be her brother. Now that this elder brother of hers has returned, how could she, as his younger sister, not go to welcome him home. But in fact, they rarely came into contact with each other. They were like two strangers.
In the end, it was because she didn't want to hang out with an orphan who came to seek shelter in her home. Back then her character wasn't very good, she was still young and insensible. Zhong Li Luo lived in her house, ate in her house, and used her house. Even worse was that he always showed a cold face; who would be happy to have to take care of him. The servants didn't like him very much and were usually gossiping behind his back. If it weren't for her continuously pitying him for having no mother or father, she would have already become enraged many times. Zhong Li Luo wasn't stupid and knew that she didn't like him, therefore they had become alienated from each other. In all the time that they had been living in the same household, how many words had they said to each other, around 10? When he left the house, she was able to relax because she didn't have to worry about running into him every day. Who knew that his fortunes would turn around.
Afterwards, Zhong Li Luo didn't go to take the imperial examination. Instead he went into the military, and unexpectedly he rose quickly through the ranks. Nowadays she actually felt some remorse, she knew that if she had been nicer in the past then she could have had a very powerful relative, and would have more benefits in the end.
She sighed, she had chopsticks in her hand and was waiting for Bai Lu, who was standing off to the side, to finish cutting up a cold melon, on the other hand she could feel that the stifling hot weather was getting even worse. She couldn't help but complain: "So annoying, why couldn't this person have chosen a better time to come back instead of such a hot and humid day."
Bai Lu, knowing that she didn't like hot weather, couldn't help but laugh softly, and she pressed her smile.
"Madam speak cautiously, this Zhong Li Luo general is brilliant and has outstanding military accomplishments. He has once again returned victorious and the emperor has decided to confer upon him Ding Yuan county and the t.i.tle of Marquis."
Rong Jiahui flatly said:"How is this important? So what if he is a marquis, isn't my father also a marquis, what's so great about him, if he is really that capable, then let him become the king of this country……"
As she said that, she started running out of air in her lungs and her tone weakened.
Yes, how could it be the same, in the end her father's position of marquis was from her great-grandfather's generation, it had been pa.s.sed down twice. Every generation, the rank descends one level, until it is gone. If her father performed a meritorious service, he could pa.s.s down the marquis position to the next generation. However, her father was mostly inactive. His position had almost no duties and all day long he would stay at home and idle about, how could he compete with people who actually did their jobs. But also Zhong Li Luo was still so young. In those days, her great-grandfather had been conferred the position of marquis when he was almost twice as old as Zhong Li Luo.
Zhong Li Luo indeed was very talented, back then she would only occasionally notice him, but now she couldn't deny his talent…
She slowly swallowed a mouthful of cold melon. Indescribably, she felt her heart stiffen, perhaps, these cold melon slices were too big, it could be a.s.sumed that it was Bai Lu's fault.
She boredly held up her head, listening to the sound of the rain, unexpectedly thinking of one matter, she once again asked Bai Lu:"I seem to remember, that name……that newly promoted marquis is within three years of my age, already twenty seven, yet still hasn't taken a wife. He has to look for a well bred lady?"
Bai Lu's jaw moved, "This is also something to take note of, Ding Yuan marquis this time has had a great victory and returned, and it seems the emperor wants to provide him with a wife."
"Nan Ping county's Xiao Wen Yan?"
"Yes."
Rong Jiahui was somewhat gloomy. Aside from Xiao Wen Yan, who else would it be. She had asked Bai Lu before and knew that the emperor had three daughters. One was her younger brother's wife, another was already engaged, and the last was Xiao Wen Yan.
Xiao Wen Yan, like her younger brother's wife, was gentle and obedient. There wasn't really a choice when choosing between her and Xiao Wen Yan. Rong Jiahui had always relied on her father's position to get what she wanted and held her nose high in the air. This drew the anger of the young women of the capital. In order to not be bullied by them she had recently always stayed in her home and disliked going out. This had turned out to be greatly convenient for Xiao Wen Yan.
Convenient, very convenient. Since she had thought highly of herself in the past, she never deliberately inquired about Zhong Li Luo, but still knew about him. Zhong Li Luo's style was not bad, he was clean-living and honest, and he wasn't too young nor too old. As for his appearance, at least from what she could remember, he was good looking. But now he was going to be married to the person she hated the most. Thinking of this, she couldn't help but feel sour.
When she thought of Xiao Wen Yan rolling her eyes at her and looking satisfied, her heart immediately felt unwell. Why was it that in this whole capital full of young girls it just had to be her most hated Xiao Wen Yan.
She, while resolutely stabbed a piece of cold melon, couldn't help but mutter:"She's really lucky."
Exactly, lucky. While that mediocre person from Nan Ping County was now getting married after waiting until the age of twenty two. She just knew that now everyone in the capital was mocking her and laughing at her right now!
After all, she wronged people everywhere all the time. Many people thought she was unpleasing to the eye and wanted to stab her with anything as soon as they saw her. And even though they knew that they couldn't actually hurt her, they still tore her apart with their words.
Ah! Why, of all people, why did it have to be the one she hated the most! Even when there were so many good girls in the capital and they were all fine.
But this matter was separate from her, she was unrelated. She has been like this her whole life, always using her family's position to get what she wants, yet never valuing her family. But so what, even if she did value her family what would change?
Who made her get married so early.
It was only because of her father's poor talents that she was married off to the Liu family in order for him to obtain benefits. She shed countless tears for herself in her mind, regretting that she had such a useless father. When she had still been in her mother's womb he had gone to a banquet hosted by the Liu minister. While there he had drunk a large amount of alcohol and had turned into an even greater idiot. At that time he saw the Liu Family's eldest son, a cute little boy named Liu Qian Chen, and foolishly mumbled to himself. "If my wife gives birth to a daughter how great would it be if she could be married to him" Her father had always looked good in the eyes of the public. Both their families were well matched, the Liu family had good manners, the child didn't look bad at all, indeed it couldn't be better. Therefore, in the end her father set an engagement.
Pitifully, when she was still just sixteen and hadn't had enough fun chasing after the n.o.ble sons in the capital, she had, unwillingly, been lifted up on a palanquin and brought back to the Liu Family.
If Liu Qian Chen was an excellent husband, it would have been fine. But unfortunately for her, while he was a modest gentleman and gentle as jade on the outside, on the inside he was a distinguished playboy. Of those who frequented the red light districts, who didn't know the eldest son of the Liu Family. If he were out at night, it was almost guaranteed that he would be at an entertainment house[brothel]. Before, she was completely in the dark and knew nothing about this. She still believed that she had married a rare and handsome husband. She still thought that she was well matched with him. She only ended up finding out about it after being married when Liu Qian Chen had her sleep in the study room!
For her, this was a loud and resounding face slap, she hadn't won at all. Her devil of a father had made her into a gra.s.s widow. All day long he was visiting brothels while she was staying in the Liu Family home. She had lost so much face that she didn't dare to leave the house because she knew that everybody in the capitol now thought she was a joke.
It was alright though, how big of a deal was it. She could endure, she could endure anything.
But what made her almost vomit blood was that this motherf*cker actually started playing around with her maidservant Qiu Fen who she had known for a long time.
From then on, her home had a new concubine named Qiu. What a dog. This cheating couple, thinking about it she felt full of grievances and wanted to cry. She actually didn't care that much about Liu Qian Chen's various imperfections, but she couldn't stand living in the same place as that backstabbing slave. Especially when Liu Qian Chen would rather go see that slave than see her.
The more she thought about it the more agitated she felt. She picked up a fan embroidered with waterways and indifferently fanned herself.
This was a broken matter in her own home. She had already been there for eight years and the days still felt long. Anyways, she was content with the situation because she had lost the power to change anything years ago.
As she thought of that she once again stabbed a piece of cold melon and put it into her mouth. As she was about to start chewing, the cart suddenly b.u.mped against something which jolted her and she immediately felt her throat tighten.
*Cough*Cough*Cough*
That G.o.dd.a.m.n cold melon…… I think…… I'm choking! Help!!
Rong Jiahui clutched her throat in pain and the whole person fell on a soft blanket.
Looking at the breathless Rong Jiahui, Bai Lu's face paled, unconsciously, the silver plate held in her hands also slipped to the ground and the cold melon inside scattered on the ground.
”Madam, are you okay?! Are you choking? Spit it out! You have to spit it out!”
Bai Lu said that as she patted her back, trying to get her to quickly spit out that G.o.dd.a.m.n cold melon.
Rong Jiahui, who had difficulty breathing, rubbed her neck. Her face was hard and purple, and a piece of cold melon was stuck in her throat. She couldn't swallow it but she also couldn't spit it out. Bai Lu, who was staring at her and crying, hurriedly shouted out: “Driver, go home! Madam, she- she isn't well!”
Rong Jiahui's once vibrant face was now completely distorted, turning green and purple, her forehead full of sweat. Her round eyes opened wide and she saw Bai Lu anxiously yelling, but the scene before her soon became indistinct. She took her hands away from her throat and started grabbing towards Bai Lu's sleeve. She managed to catch it and she opened her mouth to speak but before she could say anything, her vision began to Fade to Black.
Killed by a piece of cold melon. she must be unique under the sky.
