Unfortunately, it was raining during lunchtime today.
Since they promised not to visit each other during school, Tooru’s lunch was but a frozen meal.
He was eating lunch with Jun and the boys, thinking how he can take it easy today after school since he has the day off work, until the cla.s.s erupted in some sort of stir.
Tooru looks over to the door where the commotion was. His eyes open wide.
Amane was standing there and sweetly smiling at Tooru.
“Whoa, that’s Amane by the door there.”
“Yeah, but why’s she in our cla.s.s?”
His friends talk over each other, then Jun leaned in.
“Hey, what did you do?”
“Nothing. Not that I know of at least,” Tooru whispers back.
In the corner of his eye, Akane whips out her notepad and begins jotting down notes as if it were any of her business.
Probably tired of waiting for Tooru to come towards her, Amane—with an unchanging smile—walks over to him instead.
While the other boys in cla.s.s scramble in fear since they know full well of the rumors surrounding her, Tooru looks up at Amane without hesitation. Her smile is fake—that much is obvious.
“What is it, Miyamoto?”
“I just wanted to swing by to say hi and thanks for always treating my sister so well. Hmm… you’re just some humdrum, average guy. Not that it’s a surprise.”
Bringing up Satsuki’s name stirs the crowd even more.
“What the h.e.l.l did you do with Satsuki under our noses?!”
“I’ll take your place, bud.”
“This isn’t any of your business, is it? Miyamoto is here to talk with me.”
“Oh, it’s nothing that others can’t know about.”
Amane crosses her arms and eyes Tooru up and down. It may be a little intimidating, but Tooru doesn’t s.h.i.+rk away from staring back into her eyes.
His image reflects from her dark brown eyes. Her being here isn’t so much a kind gesture as much as it’s a predator hunting her prey.
“So? What do you want from me?”
“Could we perhaps… go somewhere quieter?”
Amane claps her hands in front of her face.
Tooru felt his heart race; the uproar from the cla.s.s doesn’t help it either.
Calm down. She’s not gonna do anything to you here. I’ll just ask her clearly what she wants from me.
He crosses his arms too, but mainly to hide his sweaty palms.
He knew this was coming, but who would have thought she’d come knocking right on the heels of what Tooru and Satsuki talked about yesterday.
“… fine. Where should we go?”
“Let’s head to the hallway outside of the caretaker’s room where there’s hardly anyone. That way there’ll be no one listening in.”
She wants to talk face to face, one on one and it doesn’t seem like Tooru has any other choice but to go.
“Right outside of the caretaker’s room. Gotcha.”
“Why don’t we go together right now?”
“Relax. I’m not about to make a break for it.”
Having said that, Tooru leads the way. He can almost sense Amane quietly giggling behind his back, but he ignores her and looks straight ahead.
The caretaker’s room is right around the corner after taking the stairs down. Tooru takes Amane to the storage area under the stairs.
“If you’ve got something to say to me, make it quick, if you could.”
“… you think you have the right to tell me what to do?”
Amane’s expression is a complete one-eighty from before and Tooru tenses up.
What she is thinking is anyone’s guess, but having dragged him all the way here, it couldn’t be anything good. Being nasty to him is certainly not ruled out.
In a sudden, she steps in to close the distance, pressing her tall body and shapely chest onto him.
Instinctively, he takes a step back but Amane has an arm around his waist, pulling him into her b.r.e.a.s.t.s.
How soft.
Any other guy would have a nosebleed by now, but Tooru can’t feel anything but Amane’s hostility towards him. What on earth is going through her mind right now?
“Cut it out.”
“Hmm?”
Once he tries to force his way out of her hold, Amane lets go and steps away. Then, she licks her lips as she gazes at Tooru.
“Any guy would be more than excited from a situation like that, but I guess you’re a limp-d.i.c.k f.a.ggot since you wouldn’t even grab me back.”
“You’re not funny. And being suddenly grabbed like that is just creepy. Anyway, I don’t think we’re here to get all touchy-feely, so why don’t you spit out what you have to say?”
Amane puts another sweet smile on her face. She steps closer to Tooru again and grabs his right hand. A chill shoots up his spine and gives him gooseb.u.mps.
“Hey, why don’t you go out with me?”
His heart races in response to her words.
What did she just say? Go out with her? How can someone say something like that so casually? He flinches from her ridiculousness.
Seeing his reaction, Amane steps yet closer and looks up at him. The sight of her like that reminds him of Satsuki, but he quickly shakes it off from his mind.
“… Miyamoto, do you usually so casually ask guys out like this?”
“Why? Love needs no reason, right? Or are you the kind of guy who needs to get his d.i.c.k wet first?”
Her words get a rise out of him.
Tooru shoves her away and stares.
“f.u.c.k off. I’m nothing like that.”
“Big words coming from someone who’s s.c.r.e.w.i.n.g my sister. What? You’ll go out with my sister but not me?”
“Yeah. Or at least I don’t have an ounce of desire to go out with either of you. Satsuki’s my friend and you and I’ve just met. I couldn’t go out with either of you.”
Reasoning with her made her even angrier; her face looks like a demon’s.
“… how dare you reject me? You’d better watch out.”
“Hmph. As long as you don’t do anything to Satsuki, I’m ready whenever.”
Amane shows her true intentions. Her friendly demeanor changed to a harsh glare.
She seemed to be taken aback, but quickly returns to her condescending att.i.tude.
“Heh. You’re ready, are you?”
“Yeah. I knew from the moment of getting involved with Satsuki meant getting involved with you. Bring it on.”
As he finishes speaking, Amane bursts out laughing.
“Haha, ahaha. Ahahaha!”
“What’s so funny?”
“That piece of s.h.i.+t really likes you too.”
“You take that back.”
“Shut up. It’s none of your business how I refer to my sister.”
Her tone is frigid cold.
It’s a shame that Tooru couldn’t punch Amane out for talking about Satsuki like that. But whoever strikes first loses.
Rumors say there was this one time, one of Amane’s cla.s.smates couldn’t stand her bullying and spoke up. In return, Amane called up her friends to beat them up but was suspended for it.
Judging by his situation now, those rumors aren’t just rumors to Tooru anymore.
Other rumors surrounding Amane are just about the same. Tooru puts his foot down and braces himself.
Seeing him do that, Amane abruptly switches to a cold, collected face. She crosses her arms and looks up at Tooru again.
“You’re interesting.”
“Huh?”
“I meant exactly what I said—you’re interesting. Everyone else would be on their knees by now, but you’re different. It’s nice to have a reason to put you on my s.h.i.+t list.”
All of his senses are now warning him of danger.
This girl is trouble. She knows full well how to crush someone’s spirit and destroy them from inside out.
Even so, Tooru cannot lose. The sight of Satsuki’s fleeting smile keeps running through his mind.
It does not matter what hards.h.i.+ps may come if it means protecting that smile.
Amane scoffs and before making her departure, she sends a nearby bucket flying with a kick. The bucket and the mop in it falls over, making a huge crash.
“Well, then, good day to you. I hope that every day from now on is filled with fun and joy.”
Amane turns away from him and waves her hand behind her as she walks up the staircase.
Hearing the loud noise, the caretaker comes out of his room.
He looks at the soggy mop and bucket and then looks at Tooru.
“Hey, what are you doing?! Did you do this?!”
“… yes.”
“I don’t know what you’re steaming about, but don’t go disrespecting school equipment. Now, take responsibility and clean it up.”
“Understood.”
It’s not as if he was trying to cover for Amane.
But she’s the most talented girl in the school and all the teachers love her. No one would believe Tooru if he said that she did it.
Tooru leans on the wall behind him and slumps down on the ground.
She picked a fight and he had gone for it. Tooru doesn’t know what will happen, but he’s sure that nothing good will happen to him from tomorrow on.
Goodbye, peace and quiet. h.e.l.lo, h.e.l.l on earth.
Tooru rights the mop and bucket before heading back to his cla.s.sroom.
