Ding Ye's home was a separate courtyard house located in a military compound. The house was simple, unsophisticated and grand, with a heavy sense of history. By the look of it, the house was at least 100 years old. For those who could live in such a house, the house itself was a calling card that carried much weight.

As Ning Tao followed Jiang Hao into Ding Ye's house, he found out that he was not the only doctor invited by the Ding family. There were other doctors here, and they all had their own special seats, with name tags on the table in front of them. The names on the name tags were very weighty. Some of them were famous and weII-respected veteran doctors of traditional Chinese medicine, and some of them a.s.sumed personal command in big hospitals. He often read professional articles published by these people in medical journals, so he felt familiar with these names.

Also, there was a Taoist priest named Qing Feng.

It should be the man's Taoist monastic name, not his own name.

Ning Tao was surprised to see this all of a sudden, but he understood. Old Master Ding was in a high position, and had many disciples, throughout the military and political circles. Now that he was ill, there must be a lot of people recommending doctors to him to be nice to the Ding family. In fact, Ning Tao was recommended by Jiang Hao to see Ding Ye in return for his kindness, or he would not be here. But unlike those people, he had no special seat, not to mention his name tag. When he got to the living room, he didn't even know where to sit.

Jiang Hao seemed to feel embarra.s.sed, too. She pulled Ning Tao to an inconspicuous corner, and even deliberately found a topic of conversation. "There is even a Taoist priest. Isn't it a case of a drowning man clutching at a straw?"

"Don't say that," whispered Ning Tao. "There are medical skills in Taoism. As the state religion of our nation, Taoism has arts of necromancy, immortal skills and so on. They're all wonderful."

Jiang Hao looked at Ning Tao with strange eyes and asked, "As a medical student at a medical university, you believe that?"

"Yeah, I believe that. Why not?" replied Ning Tao with a grin.

How could he not believe in Taoism when he himself was a pract.i.tioner and had cured a new demon? But he did not know whether the spare old Taoist priest who sat on the old-fas.h.i.+oned wooden armchair in the living room with his eyes closed, knew anything about medicine, necromancy, immortal, etc.

While Ning Tao was looking at the old Taoist priest, the Taoist priest suddenly opened his eyes and turned his eyes to him. His eyes were very special, as if he could see through everything and even people's souls.

Ning Tao couldn't help but wonder, "That old Taoist priest has such a strange look in his eyes. Has he found anything?"

While Ning Tao was thinking this, the old Taoist priest closed his eyes again, as if the sharp light that had just flashed through his eyes was an illusion.

Then three men came out of the corridor at one side of the living room, and in the middle of them was a young man in his early thirties. He had a square face and a strong and straight body, making a tough impression. Others could tell at a glance that he was a soldier.

This young man was Ding Congjun.

Ding Congjun entered the living room with a white doctor and a young man in a linen Chinese Tang costume with a bun. The young man was also in his early thirties. He wore black-rimmed gla.s.ses, and his skin was white. He was refined in manner and looked handsome, giving the impression of being well bred.

The white doctor talked to the man in the Chinese Tang costume as they walked, and then the man in the Chinese Tang costume translated the white doctor's words to Ding Congjun.

Ding Congjun stopped in the middle of the living room with a grave look. He didn't notice Jiang Hao or Ning Tao standing in the inconspicuous corner.

Those doctors waiting in the living room got up and walked over to Ding Congjun, seeming to wait for him to make a decision for something.

"Let's go over and listen," Jiang Hao suggested.

Ning Tao nodded and walked over with Jiang Hao.

At this moment, the man in the Chinese Tang costume uttered, "Dr. Sean said Old Master must be taken to Wellington hospital now. There is no cure for Old Master in Hua Country. You decide what to do, Congjun."

Ding Congjun frowned and said, "Huaying, you know my father's temper. Since he fought against the so-called United Nations Command on the peninsula, he has not the slightest liking for the west. If he had known I was sending him to England for medical treatment, he would have cursed me roundly."

Outside the crowd, Jiang Hao leaned over to Ning Tao's ear and whispered, "That man in the Chinese Tang costume is Fan Huaying. He is an incredible man of great ability."

Ning Tao just gave her a nod, not interested in the news.

Fan Huaying added, "Congjun, Wellington hospital is the best private hospital in the world, and Dr. Sean is the leading general pract.i.tioner for the brain at Wellington hospital. His advice can't be infallible. Think it over."

Ding Congjun's face was full of hesitation.

"That English doctor was too tactless," complained an old Chinese doctor named Yan Song. "I don't want to judge him by suggesting that Old Master Ding goes to England for medical treatment, but I don't agree with him that he can't be cured in our Hua Country. We have Chinese medicine for thousands of years. How dare a western doctor to criticize our medical skills?"

"Doctor. Yan, it was me who invited Dr. Sean here. He is a straightforward person man. I apologize for him for any offence. If you have a problem with this matter, we can have a private chat later. What do you think?" Fan Huaying said.

Then Yan Song made a bow with hands folded in front and politely said, "Mr. Fan, you're modest. What I said was also thoughtless. Forgive me, Mr. Fan."

Ning Tao became curious about Fan Huaying. He had read about Yan Song in a medical journal and knew that Yan Song was known as the "divine physician in the present age", which meant that his medical skill was remarkable. However, Yan Song was so kind to Fan Huaying as to be afraid of offending him. He couldn't help but wonder what kind of man Fan Huaying was.

At this point, Ding Congjun turned to Yan Song and stated, "Doctor Yan, you've seen my father, too. I'd like to know your opinion."

Yan Song was silent for a moment before he replied, "I was the first one to see Old Master Ding, but... Please forgive my incompetence, I cannot diagnose the cause of his disease. I have never seen such a disease in my life."

Ding Congjun's eyes darted from those doctors' face to face and then he asked, "You've all seen my father. Can someone give a correct diagnosis or advice?"

No one spoke. The room was quiet.

Then Ning Tao realized that these doctors had already seen Ding Ye. To put it mildly, he was late; to put it bluntly, he was ignored. Maybe it was only because of Jiang Hao's kindness that Ding Congjun allowed him to see Ding Ye, but then he forgot about him.

"Taoist Qing Shui, why don't you have a try?" Fan Huaying advised.

The Taoist priest, who was still sitting on the old-fas.h.i.+oned wooden armchair with his eyes closed, took a glance at Fan Huaying, and nodded. Then he got up and walked down the corridor. He didn't say a word during the whole process, but his eyes and manner made it look as if everyone owed him money.

With a move of his mind, Ning Tao's eyes and nose instantly entered the state of looking and smelling. In his sight, Taoist Qing Shui was enveloped by a cloud of colorful aura and a little bit of white aura, just like a snake full of spirituality swimming in his innate aura.

With only one look, Ning Tao got the answer he wanted. "Taoist Qing Shui is really unusual as I expected. There is the spiritual energy sent out of spiritual power in his body. But since his spiritual energy is miscellaneous and impure, he isn't a true pract.i.tioner."

Taoist Qing Shui who had just stepped into the entrance of the corridor suddenly looked back in Ning Tao's direction, his eyes sharp and a bit harsh.

Ning Tao gave a smile at him and pulled his eyes and nose out of the state of looking and smelling.

For a moment there was a flash of confusion in Taoist Qing Shui's eyes, as if unsure of a judgment. But at that moment, he had withdrawn his gaze and continued to the room at the end of the corridor.

Jiang Hao elbowed Ning Tao and whispered, "Come with me."

Ning Tao nodded and followed her to Ding Congjun. Although he was a neglected roving doctor, he could not go back just because he was neglected. He had arrived at the patient's house, after all.

"Brother Congjun, I brought Doctor Ning here." Jiang Hao introduced Ning Tao to Ding Congjun several paces away.

Ding Congjun then alerted his gaze from Jiang Hao to Ning Tao. He frowned as he saw Ning Tao's unseemly clothes, his tattered medicine chest, and the fact that he only looked like he was in his early 20s.

Ning Tao noticed Ding Congjun's expression, but he didn't show anything on his face. Given his clothes and age, it was normal for a man like Ding Congjun to be suspicious of him at first sight.

Fan Huaying's eyes also fall on Ning Tao. Unlike Ding Congjun's reaction, there was a strange glint in his eyes.

Jiang Hao walked up to Ding Congjun with a smile on her face and said, "Brother Congjun, this is Doctor Ning I told you about. He can cure Uncle Ding's disease."

"He can cure my father's disease?" Ding Congjun looked at Ning Tao strangely and said, "He's so young... Can he really cure my father?"

"You don't know how amazing Doctor Ning's medical skill is," Jiang Hao stated. "My father was paralyzed by a stroke before, and the hospital couldn't cure him, but Doctor Ning cured him with a few silver needles, and..."

"Are you kidding, Miss?" Yan Song interrupted Jiang Hao with a look of disbelief. "Did he really cure paralytic stroke with a few silver needles?"

"Not just my father, Doctor Ning even cured a psychopath that Chen Jun failed to cure," Jiang Hao continued.

"What?" Yan Song reacted as if he had been trampled. "He cured a patient that Chen Jun failed to cure?"

Then Jiang Hao held up three fingers, and stated in a proud voice, "And he cured that patient in three hours."

As these words were spoken, the living room was in an uproar.

"What? Is this young man really so skilled in medicine?"

"The medical community in Hua Country is not very big nor small. When did such a young miracle doctor appear? How come I haven't heard anything about him?"

"I think she is boasting. How could there be such magic?"

People in the living room expressed their opinions, but no one believed Jiang Hao.

Yan Song looked at Ning Tao and told him in the tone of an elder, "Young people need to keep their feet on the ground. Which school do you come from? Or, who is your teacher?"
