Chapter 22 - Back from Death's Door

"It seems like we won't be able to complete the mission this time. Let's leave as well," Shen Molian said.

"Alright," Lin Haoxue gave one last glance at the two fruits on that little plant. Originally, it just showed off its spirit power making people desire it, then the next moment, it emitted a fatal absorption power.

"Was your profound power affected?" Lin Haoxue asked out of the blue. When those cultivators were screaming, she checked her profound power. She noticed that the pearl inside her dantian began to stir but it wasn't able to do much under the restriction of the white whirlpool. Inside her dantian the white whirlpool was spinning away like usual and her profound power was still as quick-flowing as ever not showing any signs of solidifying. Beside her, Shen Molian appeared unaffected as well.

"My profound power has been suppressed but there are no big problems," Shen Molian said as she discovered that Lin Haoxue hadn't been affected either.

"This… How can this be?" The two girls hadn't left yet and they heard this.
They looked in the direction where the voice came from, and surprisingly, saw that those who had run away didn't leave as they wished; instead, they had been blocked. The ghost and sun birds were blocking their exit.

Originally, they were arch-enemies but now they were cooperating with each other. Under the two leaders' commands, they quickly blocked all those cultivators from escaping. But what was weird was that they just stopped them, but didn't kill them. It seemed like they wanted those cultivators to die from having their profound power absorbed.

"Oh that makes sense," the complexion on Shen Molian's face turned bad, and she laughed wryly saying, "This Yin Yang Double Gateway hasn't fully matured yet. Now all of them will be offerings for its birth."

"Offerings?" When she heard what was said, Lin Haoxue thought of something and her complexion changed as well. Ever since she had come here, she learned a lot of knowledge about this world; therefore, she understood Shen Molian meant. In this world, the balance of energy was emphasized, and since these treasures were too precious, they only appeared once every few years.

Every time a treasure appeared there would always be a disaster because they need too much energy to be born; therefore, they would absorb everything within a thousand miles. Everything in a thousand miles would become ash including any living creatures; there were no exceptions.

"Seems like you've thought about it as well," Shen Molian saw her look, so she knew that she had realized it too.

"What about us?" Lin Haoxue looked at Shen Molian's face and could tell that she had calmed down, so she asked, "You know what we should do, right?"

"Yes, but it'll be very dangerous. Later, hold my hand tightly, never let go," Shen Molian looked at Lin Haoxue and said seriously. Only after Lin Haoxue nodded her head did she feel relieved.

n.o.body in the Demon Beast Forest heard their conversation. And, at this moment, those cultivators and spirit beasts were standing on opposite sides. Those who were simply blocked didn't feel relieved at all. Even though they didn't die immediately, living still didn't seem like a viable long-term option at the moment.

They watched many cultivators near them pa.s.s away due to their vitality running out. This feeling of waiting to die was the most disappointing. The worst thing isn't death itself, but simply waiting to die.

Being threatened, n.o.body was willing to sit and wait for death. Even though they were up against those terrifying ghost and sun birds, that were horrifying enough to scare off anyone from fighting them, but, being pushed into a dead end caused them to rebel.

"Stupid birds! You think I'll just wait for death, you're dreaming! Even if I have to die, I won't go easy on you dumb birds!"
"Everyone, we need to fight together so we have even a chance to survive, otherwise, we'll all die here!"
"That's right, we can't just sit wait here and wait for death."
"Yah! Let's do our best."

Everyone's eyes turned red as no one was willing to die. Therefore, everyone picked up their weapons and rushed at the birds.

A lot of people were burnt to ash by Raging Inferno and a lot were infected with Ghost Fire and became a dried out corpses. However, as more and more cultivators rushed them their Raging Inferno and Ghost Fire weakened, so they seized the chance to break through and left the area.

The ghost and sun birds who were tangled up obviously didn't have too much energy to keep blocking them.

Seeing someone escape successfully, hope was ignited for all the others behind. They waved their weapons and rushed at the spirit birds. Even though there were some people who successfully broke through the siege, may cultivators parished.
"Get ready, let's go," Shen Molian no longer stared at those people but pulled Lin Haoxue with her left hand and took out a small jade card with her right. But just when she was about to activate the jade card, she was disrupted by a power.

"Haha, you guys weren't able to escape anyway so help me out. Take it as doing a good deed."
A pair of big hands pushed them from behind and the force was so much that both Lin Haoxue and Shen Molian were blown a few miles away; they were pushed right in front of the ghost and sun birds.

"Humph, you want to step on us to pa.s.s through them. Your ability isn't good enough." Shen Molian yelled at him as her aura rose little by little until it far exceeded the Profound Grand Master realm and even rose to the Profound Ancestor realm! She immediately left the sun birds and coldly looked at that person who had pushed them. He was a grey-robed elder at the Late-stage Profound Ancestor realm.

The grey-robed elder felt terrified since he didn't expect that he would stumble upon such a talent. He could tell that this wasn't her real strength and that she had borrowed another's power. But the fact was that her strength now exceeded his own. It was obvious that only a Profound Immortal could possibly have such power!

"You wanted our lives? Make sure to keep your own first." Shen Molian said coldly. She gathered all of her profound power into her hands and slapped the grey-robed elder firmly.

Her profound power had actually changed forms! Even a Profound Saint realm cultivator wouldn't be able to do such a thing. As expected, this really was a Profound Immortal's strength. The grey-robed elder didn't have time to think much as he was slapped into pieces by her big hand.

Having dealt with the grey-robed elder, Shen Molian looked at Lin Haoxue and was frightened as she saw her was standing opposite to the leader of ghost birds.
"You want my life as well? Try me!" Lin Haoxue turned her head around and looked at the ghost birds that were rus.h.i.+ng towards her. Her eyes were cold and serious. She stood there for a bit then gathered her fire elemental profound power into her palm and slapped towards the incoming ghost birds.

Ghost birds were spirit beasts so they had a much more evolved spiritual wisdom, but this also made them haughty and prideful. The leader of the ghost birds had the strength that a Profound Grand Master realm cultivator couldn't compare too and their Ghost Fire was utterly terrifying. Lin Haoxue's behavior obviously challenged its dignity; therefore, its eyes showed a humanized madness. It waved its wings and a burst of Ghost Fire rushed at Lin Haoxue. This was totally different from the small Ghost Fire from before. It was simply ma.s.sive, so one could tell how powerful it was just by its size.

"Haoxue!" Shen Molian shouted out when she saw her situation. She wanted to rush to her and help block the attack, however, she was too far away and the speed of their battle was too fast so she couldn't make it.

"Booooom!"
A huge sound like two ma.s.sive mountains colliding into each other resounded. The flame and Lin Haoxue's profound power slammed into each other.

Hearing this, Shen Molian was afraid that Lin Haoxue's vitality had been absorbed, and she was now a dried out corpse. But what made what she saw hard to believe was that her profound power had actually become stronger when her fire elemental profound power came into contact with the darkness elemental Ghost Fire.

The Ghost Fire had weakened, so it was obvious that it was actually Lin Haoxue's profound power which absorbed the Ghost Fire! "Unbelievable," Shen Molian was surprised but at the same time relieved as she walked towards Lin Haoxue, unsure why the sun birds behind her didn't attack.

This ghost bird had a very high level of spiritual wisdom even amongst spirit beasts. After the crisis, it immediately severed its Ghost Fire and ran away. This was because to them, Ghost Fire was extremely precious.

"Are you alright?" After the ghost birds fled, Shen Molian came close to her. She took a look at Lin Haoxue and asked.

"Look, I'm not the one who's hurt," Lin Haoxue laughed while pointing in the direction that the ghost birds had fled.

"I think so too," Shen Molian smiled while saying, "Since you were the one who forced the spirit beasts to flee, I could say you're fiercer than them."

Shen Molian soon took back her smile and reminded Lin Haoxue about their situation. Looking around, Lin Haoxue discovered that now the only living beings here were just the two of them.

Now that all those terrifying spirit beasts were no longer focused on them, they quickly came to the side of the Yin Yang Double Gateway.
This should have been the best time to make their escape, but both of them didn't leave; they wanted to witness the birth of these heavenly fruits.
