Chapter 140

"You've got to be kidding me." Stryker123 and his group of players had finally gotten to see BLANKs group of players advancing towards them in the swamp. SoulDemon and his party hadn't slowed their advance, even as James tossed small packs of Snuggle-Woofs and Funky Monkeys at them to try and slow them down. His plan had been to stall the party and allow his adventurers as much time as he could to prepare their defenses. He had bought them maybe four minutes…

"Well, they are definitely efficient." For the first time, Rue wasn't eating a snack or drinking a drink. She was watching the battlefield intently, completely focused on what was going on. James had taken their forms into the overhead view of the instance, so that they could not only watch everything unfold around them, but so that he could have better control of the situation below.

"Agreed." The moment the mob aggro had picked up on the party, the Chaotic Sorcerer's spells had gotten…more and less chaotic at the same time. That is to say, he seemed to be manipulating the spells he cast with more intent, allowing them to do the maximum amount of damage or crowd control as was needed for the situation. That was the unique trait of a Chaotic Sorcerer. Their spells could be tweaked by the player to apply additional effects, such as increased damage, more damage over time, crowd control, or even healing.

Chaotic Sorcerers could also adjust the look and shape of the elemental spells they were launching. Earlier, the level 35 Chaotic Sorcerer, BurningJazzHands, was just launching blue fire and bright pink lightning around at mobs. When he got serious, his spells became a myriad of dazzling colors, and packed a lot of additional effects and damage. Meaning he had switched from just throwing around whatever, to casting prepared tweaked spells that he had likely hand crafted for a variety of situations.

SoulDemon, on the other hand, began actively darting too and fro around the group, choosing to engage any and every mob that appeared before anyone else could react. His appearance seemed to fade even more, creating nearly a complete form of camouflage. James's mobs just didn't seem to be able to see him, until he had already made his first attack. By the time they reacted, he was darting away, fading back into shadows, as the sorcerer's spells went to work.

Any time a group of mobs collapsed on the party with a decent size of numbers, SoulDemon would begin dancing in and out of SpinToWin's protective wall of s.h.i.+elds, while Crikey launched a bunch of what appeared to be bear traps and trip wires. Any mobs that made the mistake of drawing too close to the wall of s.h.i.+elds, would suddenly find themselves electrocuted and stunned by trip wires, or in severe pain and held in place by the bear traps. At which point, SoulDemon would unleash a combo of rapid attacks and skills to bring the closer mobs down, with the sorcerer cleaning up the ones in the back.

Needless to say, James was certain they were gaining a whole lot of dungeon essence for BLANK, which James really didn't want them to take back.

"Man, I'm not even level thirty yet." Axel42 let out a heavy sigh, his eyes meeting FlashFyre's as he spoke.

The female necromancer laughed at him. "That's because you stubbornly wanted to try and take down Old Man Jenkins with just the two of us."

"Yeah, in hindsight, probably not my best decision." James noticed the Summoner hadn't summoned any of his mobs yet. Having gotten to play around with the cla.s.s himself, James was even more familiar with Axel42's cla.s.s now than he had been. He was certain the Summoner had been waiting to see what enemies they were up against, before he summoned his mobs.

"You don't say." FlashFyre, unlike Axel, had already ama.s.sed her set of mobs. Or, more appropriately, she had risen them from the grave. The necromancer had the ability to raise the dead. Funnily enough, by the game mechanics of DCO, things that shouldn't have skeletons, did. This meant necromancers could summon skeletal mobs from anything they killed, once. They couldn't summon skeletal mobs from the bodies of their dead mobs.

Of course, not only could necromancers create skeletons, but the stronger they got, they could create zombies, golems, ghosts, etc. At level 20, they had the opportunity to choose what path of necromancer they wanted to be. Some paths allowed for them to summon zombies or ghosts or other undead creatures. Others, such as the path FlashFyre had chosen, allowed them to enhance the type of undead mob of their choice.

FlashFyre had chosen the Path of Bones, allowing her to create stronger versions of her skeletal mobs. It also allowed her to combine skeletal mobs to create larger skeletons, uncreatively called Greater Skeletons. At level 29, she had the ability to control 10 regular skeletons, 5 skeletal mages, and 1 Greater Skeleton. When she hit level 30, she would be able to choose a new path, or could further go down the path of Bones.

"You've got to admit, it was still awesome." The runes around Axel42's wrists began to glow, as it seemed he had finally chosen what he was going to summon. "Though, I really wish I was level 30 right now." He let out a sigh and shook his head, two pentagrams glowing before him.

"Maybe if we hadn't gotten eaten by that mimic yesterday." FlashFyre shot him another look, which he just shrugged to in response. Apparently, they had come across quite a few misfortunes, and from the sounds of it, usually because of him.

"I can't help that I had to go bathroom alright. How was I supposed to know the toilet was going to be a mimic? Like, seriously, who does that?" The pentagrams before him continued to swirl, growing in size as they did. A moment later, two ma.s.sive forms appeared before him.

"Nice." James mumbled. He knew Axel42 was level 29, and had chosen, to James's amus.e.m.e.nt, Monster Summoner as his level 20 subcla.s.s. That allowed him the ability to summon any mob he had killed, if he had slain it enough times. Essentially, depending upon the mob, he would earn a percentages towards completion, every time it fell. From what James knew, the amount needed to be defeated varied by the type and tier of the mob. Though, it seemed Axel42 had been doing his homework when it came to getting his percentages completed, because now in James's swamp, a Steamosaurous and a Break-i-asarus both stood. Somewhere the steampunk dinosaurs were never meant to be.

"Something something, fossil fuels." Rue said jokingly as the two mobs came into being. The Breaker was actually so large that its feet sunk deeply into the soft swampy mud, while its ma.s.sive form broke through the trees around them. The Breaker let out a loud metallic roar in protest, and actually smashed down one of the ma.s.sive trees with its tail, causing a trio of jolly dollies to let out a string of angry giggles as they ran towards the next tree. Conversely, the Steamer seemed perfectly content as it sunk a little further into the ground. It was already s.h.i.+fting into Siege Mode Panzer, preparing for a long-range a.s.sault. Axel42 had chosen his mobs very well.

While a few of the members of Stryke Force eyed the arrival of the two steampunk mobs with more than a little annoyance, given the mobs ma.s.sive size and destruction of the area around them, Stryker123 simply nodded in approval towards Axel. The summoner shrugged at a few who were shooting curses towards him, as he made his way to stand next to the portal to the second floor. FlashFyre did the same, putting the two of them the furthest away from danger, while their literal army of mobs now occupied more of the battlefield than anyone else. Which was exactly what it meant to be a pet cla.s.s.

The appearance of the dinosaur mobs actually caused BLANKs adventurers to pause their advance as well. SoulDemon eyed the two new additions to the battlefield with cautious apprehension, before his eyes moved down and began scanning the group of adventurers standing in his way. It was clear BLANKs adventurers intended to capture the point that was the portal to the floor, probably intending to camp out and take down any adventurers that came to challenge them, while farming mobs at the same time. An extremely efficient strategy, in James's mind.

SoulDemon looked back at his party, his eyes s.h.i.+fting from the healer, and the sorcerer. It was apparent the level 40 player was wondering if he could count on the two for whatever it was he had planned. After a moment, he seemed to make up his mind.

"I'll take the players, the rest of you deal with the mobs." As he spoke, he sheathed his candy cane dagger, and drew out another candy cane sword. Then, he crossed both the swords across his chest, making an X, as he closed his eyes. As he stood there, silently, his form completely disappeared. A moment later, two glowing orbs appeared where his eyes should have been.

"Let's teach these scrubs the difference in our skill levels." His ethereal voice said with a cold chuckle. "I'll show them what it means to get good."
