I had never met such creatures before — right in front of us, hidden in the thick shadow, glistened the white tusks of a monster which was the same cla.s.s as the dragon that Petrovich had recently killed. This was a great opportunity to see what such a monster cla.s.s was capable of.

As long as the beast doesn't see us as a threat, it will move slowly. This was perfectly fine with me, since it meant that I could make the first move. Inhaling the Essence of Holly, I immediately put the points I got into strength, raising my attack power to 130.

Damage dealt: 0

To be honest, that was not what I had expected. I had already gotten used to dealing with the local monsters in one way or another, so this caught me off-guard. At that moment, frost began to swirl around the Boar's tusks, and then a thick layer of ice appeared right on top of them. I didn't like this at all. Quickly retreating, I appeared behind Innokenty, who stood frozen in his tracks, and the monster crashed into him at a high speed. As soon as its tusks touched the helpless man's body, he instantly turned into an ice statue. The boar's charge sent him flying backwards. Upon landing, he shattered into hundreds of small pieces, which were almost invisible in the dark. Maybe this was for the best — now I could fight without holding back. Defeating this enemy wouldn't be easy, I knew that. But I didn't care about my level being too low; I could always come back to pick up my stuff. Testing my strength would prove invaluable.

There was no sense in using Arcobaleno because its main effect was to hide my magic abilities from ordinary players. Not to mention that losing almost all of my endurance outweighed any of the skill's potential pros. What am I hoping to achieve? Even if I put everything into strength, and even if my scythe manages to pierce its skin, that won't be enough to win, and I will be left without any resources. However, the its magic defense shouldn't be that high…

The Boar ran forward again. Unlike Innokenty, I managed to dodge, and then I put my hand on the Boar's withers and activated Flame Flow. The monster immediately turned away, pus.h.i.+ng me aside. All that mattered was that it had worked.

It barely scratched the monster's huge health bar. The following information made me lose my concentration for a moment.

Intelligence: +1

Did I manage to level it up? I'm definitely not going to leave that hog alone now. I was pretty sure that it had something to do with its high magic defense and not its cla.s.s. Up until now, I only fought ordinary monsters and people who had low or no magic resistance at all. This was a pleasant change of pace.

I shouldn't have allowed myself to get distracted — the Boar took the opportunity and plunged its icy tusks into my side.

Instant Freeze has failed. The target's magic defense is too high.

Cursed by the cold, your body turns into ice. Effect lasts for 20 seconds.

Ice crust started growing from the wound; was gradually spreading over my entire body. Oddly enough, it wasn't taking away my health, but my body became stiff. The next attack would be my last. Can I do something to avoid suffering the same fate as Innokenty? What's the opposite element of ice? Cauterization is, if the medieval medicinal textbooks were to be trusted, a legitimate method of treatment.

The Boar stopped next to me as if asking: "Are you going to take a risk or are you going to be scared?" I recalled Fox stabbing her own heart, and Vlada's group who had not been afraid of finis.h.i.+ng themselves off. This helped me make a decision. Two inches of flame were enough to make my hand move to my side and melt the magical ice without difficulty.

Curse of the Cold has been removed.

The Boar rushed forth with a new attack. If I had a chance a moment ago, it was gone now. My body was still obeying poorly and there was no chance that I could dodge the oncoming charge. However, now I didn't have to worry about my endurance since my medieval way of healing left me with three hundred health points.

Arcobaleno.

The Boar came to a halt and viciously stared sideward. Without thinking, I took the opportunity and jumped onto the animal's back, griping it with both my hands and feet. I then activated flow of Flame and put my palm onto the p.r.i.c.kly and dirty bristles of its neck.

My health plummeted. I had about twenty seconds left in me. Its health slowly began to decline. Soon it was at seventy percent, then fifty. But then the monster growled furiously, like a wolf, and its health was restored.

Game over for me.

The Boar stopped abruptly, and my weakened body simply flew off of it and fell onto the ground — I had no strength to hold on any more. At least, my intelligence was at twenty-eight now. I had that going on for me at least. It was a shame that I couldn't die in the battle like a warrior. Why did that matter, though? Not having a chance to win against this creature was much more insulting. Death, after all, happened to everyone. Not intending to just roll over and die, I rolled onto my back, putting forward the scythe, prepared to meet my opponent, who was rus.h.i.+ng in my direction. If I don't give up, I might still have a chance.

And then, as if the world itself decided to meet me halfway, the ground cracked open beneath me, pulling me into a suspicious dungeon. I could've sworn that the monster looked disappointed as it watched me disappear.
