The first time I decided to intervene was when Innokenty turned sideways to face Dmitri, stopped in front of him, and rushed toward the confused Olga. I took a deep breath and invested twenty endurance points into disorienting the guy. The businesswoman was not taken aback, and three, almost synchronous, shots split his head open. The first blood rallied us. The Major, covered by Paul, ran at the unprepared redhead. When did these two manage to make an arrangement? As far as I knew, Paul had been Vlada's a.s.sistant before. Did I like this turn of events? No. A moment later, Paul stopped dead in his tracks, having been pierced by Stas's and Dasha's arrows. The archers, growing bolder, then attacked Major's uncovered back. I thought that Dasha, our Sailor Moon and justice fighter, had to be dismissed, and this time Olga's gun did the work for me. Finally, it seemed that I had eliminated everybody who I was at odds with and could now observe the others.
Only Olga, Vlada and Stas remained. One more death and the tournament would be over. To be honest, I thought that the last two guys would unite, as they were from the same detachment, and quickly finish off the business lady. However, at a nod from the swordswoman, Stas turned around and shot a glowing green arrow at me.
Damage received: 16
Blocked: 154
At the last moment, I managed to inhale a tincture of Stonerose and invest the received endurance into defense. As a result, the received amount of damage turned out to be ridiculous, given the fact that it had been dealt with a special ability; especially considering that those health points were taken away from the temporarily increased ones, and that my health bar had been full when the archer caught my displeased gaze. It seemed like everybody froze and fell silent, not realizing what had happened. I took a couple of steps forward and ended the fight with a single blow.
"Congratulations to the winners!" Petrovich's voice rang out over the meadow, dispersing the silence. "Vasily, Olga, and Stas, who had joined us only recently. I hope that your strength will be directed toward benefiting our settlement."
I had decided not to attack the archer but instead deal with Vlada. Although I had a good att.i.tude toward her, I had no intention of allowing her to experiment with my involvement. Everyone should know that they would have to pay for that. Always.
"Now let's have a meal. Something tells me that you are all starving," the lancer said in a loud, friendly voice, and we accepted his offer. All of us; even those who had killed and those who had been killed recently. Oddly enough, no one held grudges. Everyone was discussing their fights, techniques, and tricks. Well, not really. There were no complaints about anyone but me. As it turned out, Dasha was convinced that I had to cover her as she was my ward; Vlada was displeased because, in her opinion, I had reacted too sharply, and the Major was sitting and nagging that it was my duty to prevent the newcomers from winning.
Unable stand them anymore, I went to bed after a while. I slept surprisingly well. My body was not feeling numb and I felt no drowsiness the following morning. Maybe all of the small troubles were finally over, and I could now do something more interesting than spend my time at the swamp. I had only half a month left to visit the "Forbidden City", a place that I did want to explore in my own. Or maybe the real reason was that Major and Semyon reached level 20, moved out of our cave and settled on the outskirts of the base, so now I could enjoy the loneliness and silence.
I had only thought about the latter when the morning silence got broken by a heart-rending female scream. This world had already taught us that unpleasant surprises were always lurking around the corner. I quickly picked up my stuff and rushed to the exit. I thought that everything was going well. Had I jinxed it?
"He's dead!" Dasha screamed, standing by one of the household dugouts, while people arrived from all over the camp, woken by her voice.
"Why are you yelling? People died, it happens!" The Major was, sometimes, of some help as he was always ready to interfere and put the one who, in his opinion, was presumptuous, in their place. Provided, of course, that he felt that power was on his side. Apparently, he found the archer harmless, having seen her abilities in yesterday's battle. "Who are you talking about, by the way?"
"I don't know," the girl answered confused and calmed down a bit. "It's not a person, it's a destroyed tombstone!"
The amorphous and sleepy crowd moved instantly, and everybody rushed to check their tombstones to see if they were still alive. It sounds odd, I know. Only in this world was it possible to learn that you had been murdered even though you were still alive. Even Petrovich, having forgotten about his calmness, rushed to the dugout, where his tombstone had been transferred to along with the cage. After the unification and the expansion of the camp, it had been decided to abandon the compulsory general graveyard. So, in addition to residential and household dugouts, two dozen holes had been dug and covered by grids, forged by the redhead, and distributed among those who were interested. And now, one of those holes, which I had mistaken for a pantry at first, was opened. This meant that someone did not go to bed last night and had decided to solve some of their problems in a rather radical way. After all, as they say, death solves all problems and dead men tell no tales. It was really great that my tombstone was not here right now.

"It's mine. My tombstone isn't there," a soft, sobbing voice called out.
