My enemy's characteristics became visible. I activated Stone Spike and pinned the creature to the ground. After that, it did not take long to deal with it as my spell's power was increased by one quarter. Four seconds later, I brought the monster's health down to zero. More importantly, now I knew what increased intelligence could give me; although I wasn't sure yet whether or not seeing hidden curses and blessings would be useful. It was time for the highlight of my performance. I had 65 intelligence by default. Combine that with the 30 from the tincture that I could invest into myself and I would have more than a 100 points. What a fool I was. I could've checked the result a long time ago. Sure, I would be without intelligence for a while, but it would be worth it. I would've gotten those points back later and would've already found the answer to my question. Well, I couldn't do anything about that now, so let's a.s.sume that I was achieving my goal slowly, but confidently.
I took a deep breath and increased my intelligence. The effect lasted less than a second, but I was able to read the new description of the skill.
Full Mind
Your intelligence level has reached 100 points. You can now see everything that is hidden.
Your spells work at 100% efficiency.
You have become one of the top 10 masters of one of the stats. You can now wear a mask.
The effect was long gone by now, but I was still standing and thinking about masters, masks and many other things that were still unfamiliar to me in this world.
Having picked up a Soft Bone and Tough Meat from the corpse of the Keltir — strange names but I did not care — I headed back to the camp, deep in thoughts, having picked up the remains of my alchemical research. It was enough for today.
"Give back the teapot!" Innokenty shouted as I walked past him and the girls. They had already lit a campfire and were cooking something that smelled very appetizing.
"You won't need it until we have tea," I said in a tone that brooked no objection. Then I added, "but I owe you." I threw the Keltir's remains next to the campfire.
Innokenty muttered something inaudible, but he didn't seem to object.
"Cat!" Semyon called me all of a sudden. "Petrovich is waiting for you."
I wondered what our leader was up to this time. Maybe he had something to offer me in exchange for the increased number of potions or maybe Dasha had become too annoying and he wanted to make me go hunting with the others. Whatever, I was sick of that. While I was making a.s.sumptions and bringing down my mood, I didn't notice that I arrived at the lancer's dwelling where he stood in the company of an unknown man. The stranger seemed to be the same age as Petrovich, maybe even a little older, but was lean and athletic.
"Cat, let me introduce you to Igor," Petrovich introduced his companion. "He's the leader of another detachment that decided to join us voluntarily."
Igor had an unshaven, sun-burnt face. He gave me a squinted look and held out his strong, dry hand. So, he decided to join voluntarily? Curiouser and curiouser.
"I see that you decided to call me to find out who had betrayed us." At first, I wanted to ignore the handshake, but then I decided not to go too far. I offered my hand, but only after a dramatic pause. After all, Igor was new to us, although, probably, he could've already heard about my inadequacy. For my own peace of mind, I would like to maintain my reputation. The question I asked wasn't really that odd. If a person came here and wanted to join us, they must've heard about our base then. Considering the fact that we weren't leaving leaflets in the forest, nor did we have a radio broadcast, who could've told him? Only one of ours.
"No one betrayed us." It was clear I made Petrovich move away from his topic. Our balding old wolf knew that the safety of the pack was top priority and he wasn't going to make a dumb mistake. Did he consider the possibility that he could be knocked out and his lance stolen? Judging by the fact that Semyon and Vlada were standing not far from them, he did. Despite them being there, he tried to do business himself.
"It was your ex-member." While the lancer and I were looking meaningfully at each other, our guest decided to finish the story. "Mikhail came to our base, severely wounded, with stone bits in his hand. He said that those were his broken tombstone fragments and started talking nonsense about you."
"Fortunately, Igor turned out to be a sensible man," Petrovich regained his initiative. "After he calmed down, the remains of his tombstone were examined. They turned out to be ordinary rock fragments with a completely different texture. It was hard to believe him even in the beginning, but after that his story sounded like utter bull. As the leader of the detachment, Igor decided to come here in order to propose a deal to us."
"Yeah, wonderful stories are usually anything but the truth," our guest's voice sounded calm and measured and more suited for some wise and kind, old man. Igor was here with us, and hence he had stepped over several dead bodies before he appeared in this world. "But risky adventures often bring success. I came here to persuade you to work together with us, and found out that Valentin Petrovich had already begun teaming up a while ago."
It seemed to be happenstance. The funny thing was that he himself was talking about wonderful stories literally a few seconds ago.
