"You're running out of time, so try and use it wisely," Dorea looked at me as if she was scanning me from head to toe.

Luckily for us, I had already thought of some questions.

"Who created this city and why is it Forbidden?" It sounded a bit clumsy, but it was straight forward.

"This city is many thousands years old," Dorea replied immediately. "It was created by those who inhabited this world long before you came. It became Forbidden quite recently though," the demoness was grinning like a carnivore.

I was about to say something like "go ahead" or "come on", but it was better not to rush her. She could refuse to answer my questions, pretending we were out of time. What could have happened in the camp that these four were now running here? Not to mention Osipov appearing. Nice company.

"People like you used to live here," Dorea finally continued. "The city grew and developed. Its inhabitants traded with other cities, even countries. And then the man, Nomenos, headed it up. He thought that one city wasn't enough for him, so he started gathering an army."

I cast a furtive glance at Lena. As if spellbound, she listened to the demoness. For the first time in a while, we learned something really important about the world in which we ended up living. Judging by Dorea's story, it wasn't just some strange place with game-like rules, but a real world. It had its own history, b.l.o.o.d.y battles and... Mysterious disappearances of the locals. As it turns out, there weren't only cities, but also states. I wondered what other discoveries awaited us.

"Nomenos managed to subdue several neighboring cities very quickly. Soon, he became the ruler of a vast empire, stretching from sea to sea," Dorea paused again.

h.e.l.l, she is wasting our time! Why?! She wasn't pleased with the uninvited guests. Why would she aggravate the situation further?

"What happened in the end?" I couldn't wait anymore.

The demoness grinned in response. She was apparently just waiting for that question.

"The Abyss happened," she said.

"What does that mean?" I patiently asked.

"What you see around you now," Dorea explained. "What's happening on the surface and in the rest of the world. Nomenos awakened an ancient power, but he was unable to cope with it. The Shadows devoured people. The multi-million city became empty in a couple of months. The Abyss spread everywhere. No one could deal with it. After a year, the rest of the world was gone."

I frantically tried to make sense of it in my head. At that moment, I remembered the remains of the road I had seen, the underground labyrinth, and the cemetery where we had once leveled up. All this were the remains of a vanished civilization, which governor imagined himself a G.o.d and destroyed the entire planet. People were the same everywhere.

Suddenly, a vague suspicion arose in my chest.

"But this world isn't completely empty, is it?" I cautiously asked.

"That's right," Dorea nodded. "The mortals are gone, but there are those whose life is eternal."

"G.o.ds?" I asked. Although I didn't like this word, it was appropriate in this case.

"You can call us that," Dorea smiled. "If you like it, of course."

At that moment, her description changed.

I hit the nail on the head. My interlocutor was someone's mentor, too. I wondered if it was a common practice for immortals here, or the ones who had brought us here, including the G.o.d of Lies and Deceit. On the other hand, maybe it was just a coincidence; one that I hadn't figured out yet.

"I'll call you immortal," I replied. "And you personally, by your name."

"Okay," Dorea agreed.

"Why are you taking us into this world?" I decided to go all in.

Dorea's face immediately changed. Her gaze narrowed into a squint, her mouth opened slightly, revealing sharp teeth, and her smooth brow furrowed.

"They're close!" she said. "Do whatever you want, but none of them must get to the Sphere!"

"Can't you stop them yourself?" Lena was indignant. "Why do you have to make us face our deaths?"

"You still don't understand, girl?" The demoness abruptly turned to her.

Honestly, I didn't understand anything either. Petrovich and the others must not touch the Sphere, that much was clear, but why couldn't Dorea protect it herself?

"The Abyss has been dormant for many years," the immortal said, looking at me. "But you, people, who came from the outside, awakened it again. The world threatens to fall apart."

The burned-out Vlada's friend, Vlada herself and Igor with their Marks of the Abyss… Could they be a new epidemic that could wipe out all of us who had come from the old world?

"This city is called Forbidden for a reason," Dorea finally bothered to answer my first question. "It's one of the few places in this world where the emanations of the Abyss are preserved. Now it can start all over again. Imagine what would happen if the one with the Mark touched the Sphere!"

"They would gain incredible power and spread this disease around the world?" I suggested, embarra.s.sed by my wording.

"They would indeed gain great power," Dorea confirmed. "But they wouldn't control themselves anymore. The Abyss would engulf their minds and they would become its obedient puppets."

"I see," I nodded. "You, immortals, created a powerful artifact, but you didn't care about its safety at all. And now you want us, people, to do your dirty work for you."

"You're a fool!" Dorea cried, and her hand appeared on my head again. "This Sphere is holding back the power of the Abyss that destroyed our world several hundred years ago! Nomenos brought it to this city and hid it from prying eyes. The blame for what is happening now lies with the mortals, not with us!"

Dorea's claws squeezed my skull, but her grip loosened after she was done talking.
