I gathered up a bundle of gra.s.s. Not enough! I turned out my pockets, finding a piece of paper, some dried leaves, and a lighter. Everything could be useful.
4 seconds... 3 seconds...
I was pressed for time, but it should be enough. It was necessary to get stronger in order to win and make a difference. An advanced Mark gave them strength; my advanced Deception would help me. Stone Spikes, which looked like a special ability, let me receive two levels of Deception. In order to break through the level 10 border, my new trick had to be twice as effective.
Flame Flow.
Having thrown the hastily collected garbage up in the air, I set it on fire, performing a circular motion with my hand. It didn't look as pathetic as I feared it would. The lighter even exploded, distracting everyone's attention from our guest. It must have looked impressive due to Arcobaleno.
"Phoenix! The revival technique!" I attracted four surprised gazes. I didn't know what Fox and Igor were thinking of, but Petrovich and Vlada were clearly perplexed. I needed a punch line, "You didn't think that such a simple attack could stop me, did you?"
Silence. They still didn't believe me. Something was missing.
"Thank you for doing all the dirty work for me. I hate followers of Chaos!" I contemptuously frowned. That should be enough. Believe me! I need those points.
"Is your G.o.d of Fire or Light?" Petrovich broke the silence with interest in his voice. Did it work?
Deception points have been received.
You have unlocked Advanced Deception, level 1.
Access to level 11 spells has been unlocked.
Spells levels 1-3 have been enhanced.
Skill Unity of Magic has been unlocked.
Removes cooldown of all spells.
Cooldown: 1 hour
I did it! Whether or not the enhanced spells would be helpful remained to be seen. I couldn't waste time anymore. I can't let myself lose heart again.
"It's hard to say exactly, but it's certainly not of Chaos. Otherwise, I would've felt that," Baldy answered Petrovich's question. He was obviously unhappy that his arrival didn't impress anyone.
"Are you here to support your apprentice?" Jones Junior looked quite surprised, trying to realize whom Petrovich was talking about.
Unity of Magic.
Yes, I could use all of my spells again.
Arcobaleno.
You have inhaled Shadow Gra.s.s's Vapor.
The Way of Shadows has been unlocked for 30 seconds.
Although I didn't understand what strange effect I acquired after activating my main deception skill, I had no time to think about it. I would think it over a bit later. Now I had to act.
First of all, I had to deal with Vlada. She was weaker, so it would take less time. Making a step toward her, I got ready to be attacked by the Abyss Envoys. All of a sudden, I found myself right next to the startled woman. I don't know what she saw, but I came to my senses earlier than she did. Seizing the opportunity, I used my trusty "Stone Spikes, Flame Flow, don't forget to inhale the Tinctures" combo. I could've cast Weakness, but the risk wasn't worth it; Arcobaleno might end, and the spell would still work. It all turned out pretty well though.
Stone Spikes weren't their usual two-inch length, but several times longer, about twenty inches. One of them pierced the swordswoman's leg, and the other one got past her, but Vlada ran into it with her knee anyway. Flame Flow pleasantly surprised me. The scarlet flame was ten times longer than usual. As a result, it didn't just burn, but covered her entire head, scorching her hair and melting her skin.
Damage dealt: 78

Vlada's health started going down. I tried not to look at her ears, swollen like a piece of plasticine. My enemies had tremendous physical defense, but their magic resistance wasn't that high. Considering this, I still had a chance. However, the Abyss Envoys almost got to me. I didn't have enough time to finish my plan, but there may not be the second try.
"Aaaaaah!" Vlada howled as she couldn't stand the pain anymore. Her Mark of the Abyss activated Aura disappeared and her health got down to zero.
You have killed a level 4 servant of the Abyss.
Level 9 has been achieved.
At first I didn't understand why she was level 4, but then I realized that it was referring to her Mark. It leveled-up after Innokenty and Major's deaths. Had I been a little luckier, I would've reached level 10 and gotten two attribute points as well. That was another opportunity to get stronger.
Anyway, I had to go on. Having turned to Petrovich, I magically appeared next to him yet again. This time though, I understood what it was. That strange message that I saw earlier gave me the ability to teleport to my enemies' shadows. I couldn't even imagine where such a skill had come from.
Although... The Shadows, the shadow world, and all that stuff from my pocket that I set on fire could be behind this.
"You're quick," Petrovich wasn't going to let me relax. "But don't think that the same trick will work on me. Your burning scythe looks spectacular, but you aren't here to impress girls."
Dark Double Rage.
Lance Wing.
Having noticed Petrovich's activated skills, I immediately moved to Baldy's shadow. As far as I could remember, the first one increased his attack by 200% and added an area of effect damage. Since Petrovich could do that, he had at least 100 strength. If he were to add his lance's 200 attack power and activate all of the buffs, he'd kill me with a single blow due to my decreased health, which I spent on casting Arcobaleno. But he missed. Dark Double Rage had one hour long cooldown. Here's my chance.
Stone Spikes.
Flame Flow.
Unfortunately, my attack also didn't reach its target. The advanced Mark provided him with so much protection that even my new Stone Spikes shattered against his legs. As for the Flame Flow, it could've pa.s.sed through his defense. However, unlike Vlada, Petrovich didn't intend to stay still. He immediately spun his lance over his head, getting ready for a new strike.
"Hot, huh?" Despite the hectic situation, he managed to talk and not be short of breath. "I never would've imagined that a guy like you would mess with the Light. But that's for the best. It'll let me improve my Mark then. I knew it wasn't in vain that I didn't let things take their course with you."

Arcobaleno was ten seconds away from ending, so I had to hurry. This time, I didn't move far away. I just stepped aside and waited until Petrovich turned toward me. After that, I teleported right behind him, right where his shadow ended being after my little trick. I cast Flame Flow at his head, causing a furious scream. However, he didn't lose his concentration. He swung his lance once again, but I dodged, not stopping setting him on fire. My hands started to hurt as well, oddly enough. Unconsciously, I tried to push the flame away, and it obeyed. I could manipulate it as well, not just increase its size. Its current radius was a whole yard. I could now attack enemies even while trying to avoid a retaliatory attack.
But I still wasn't a warrior. Even while moving through shadows, I missed a blow. Although it was not an enhanced one, my health dangerously decreased. Arcobaleno ended, making us face each other; both of us had low health.
If only I had a few more seconds, I would've succeeded. I can't use magic now; nothing will protect me from being exposed. Although... s.h.i.+t, logs don't work here... All I have to do is to make my magic look like an ordinary blow.
"You're done; your acceleration is over. Now you're at my mercy." Petrovich easily tracked my movements and noticed that they had changed. I wondered when he learned to pay attention to such things.
"Don't even think of trying. I'm the paladin of Fire and Light, the warrior of Truth and Justice. I'll send you straight into the Abyss." What nonsense am I saying?! However, things turned quite well. Even my "Phoenix" matched this image. Even though I was obviously exaggerating, talking about "justice" and "truth", I gained some time, which everybody spent on thinking about what I had said.
I hit Petrovich's chest with the scythe and activated Flame Flow at the very last moment. For others, it probably looked like the blade flared up at the moment of the blow. At least, I hoped so.
You have killed a servant of the Abyss, advanced level 1.
Level 15 has been achieved.
Really, I did it? Petrovich provided me with much more experience than Vlada did. Being in the same detachment didn't seem to mean anything during this fight.
"Why so much pathos? Kill silently and move on." Baldy was still standing near the tree from where he had been watching the whole battle. "Although I agree that Light is quite a rare choice. You have an unusual set of fractions in your detachment."
"Our detachment?" Did he really think that we could coexist after all that had just happened?
Baldy and Fox burst laughing.
"What did you think? That you'll remain mad at each other and go your separate ways?" Fox was the first one to calm down. She decided to share information, keeping a distance from Baldy and me at the same time. Maybe she was scared. That'd make sense. One could never know what to expect from Igor, and I managed to cope with Petrovich, with whom she fought on equal terms. "It's the normal evolution for most detachments. At first, everyone pretends to be friendly and harmless. However, the day the cards are put on the table, everybody takes the side of their patrons, and the detachment is divided into several fractions. The largest ones I know are Darkness and the Abyss. Chaosites are loners, they usually set themselves apart. n.o.body bothers them, and they try to stay put. Other elements are too rare to become a serious force, but there are still some strong warriors among them."
"Wait," I couldn't believe my ears. "How is this possible? What will prevent us from attacking each other over and over again once we go back?"
"The Law!" Baldy answered. His voice sounded calm and respectful. "Different patrons, one detachment. The one who betrays it will be cursed and destroyed."
"Different elements but one Council. First deaths determine the distribution of power," Fox continued in the same tone. Unlike Baldy, there was a sly smile on her lips.
Fortunately, they provided me with more information. I also learned about Law Scrolls that appeared in every detachment that reached a certain level. All fractions of a detachment were allowed to arrange only one battle with each other; a battle in which the representatives of a detachment that killed most of their compet.i.tors would get more votes at the Council. After that, everybody would have to grit their teeth, try to stand each other and negotiate. Otherwise, they wouldn't get to the Distant Forest. On one hand, such rules within the group would make people feel safe; on the other... It didn't really matter as those who didn't like such a life could simply unite with the bigger branches of their element as soon as they reached a big city. Furthermore, they could even try to organize their own settlement; if they were strong enough, of course.
"By the way, I think that Petrovich got such a Scroll and arranged a little ma.s.sacre right in the camp. If nothing has changed, he received at least a couple of votes for his party." Baldy continued, and I attentively listened to him. Fox and he had already reached the Distant Forest and were free from being a part of a detachment. Considering their experience, some advice would be of great help. "He then decided to deal with those who weren't in the camp and didn't know anything yet. If that old fart had succeeded, he would've had absolute power in the detachment. Under these circ.u.mstances, he could've achieved a lot."
"I admit that his plan was not bad at all," Fox joined in. "He pretended to hunt for Cat and lured both Chaosites into the territory of the Abyss where he finished them off with ease. In my opinion, it was a good idea, minus the fact that he failed. Still, some surprises are impossible to predict."
Undoubtedly, that remark was about me.
"Well, now everything seems to be clear." I cast healing and restored my health. "Except one thing… What are you both doing here?"
