This routine, at first, was very difficult, but with the pa.s.sage of time the difficulty has been decreasing to the point where it does it automatically. Now it's as if he had an alarm clock every morning to make his eyes open wide.
After breakfast, Aldarion would pick up the camp. Making sure that the fire is well extinguished after throwing a bit of dirt.
Aldarion did not want to start any fire. He did not want to see that the landscapes and nature, of which he was falling in love, would be spoiled or disappear because of him.
Once sure that everything was saved and nothing was left, Aldarion started his march. While walking, he went back to review the map and according to his calculations he had two days to go if he continued with the same rhythm as in the past days.
According to his initial plan he would surround Michel Delving and arrive at the White Downs. To reach the Hobbits capital, he calculated that he had half a day left. What Aldarion did not know and was cause for concern was how long it would take him to cross the White Downs.
As the name sounded, it would be a small acc.u.mulation of hills but I did not know in which state the roads ran.
'At least there will not be ghosts like in the Barrow-downs...' Aldarion thought to himself.
The hours pa.s.sed and during that time Aldarion did not stop to observe the landscape, as he had done on other occasions during his trip. At the moment when the Sun was at the highest point of the day when Aldarion glimpsed Michel Delving, then he went around the city.
On the other side of the capital, Aldarion could glimpse to see the group of hills that formed the White Downs. Nothing else to see them Aldarion understood the reason of its name and is that the hills were made of a white stone that could even reflect to a certain point the light of the Sun, as if they were covered with snow. Only in some areas could you see some green patches of gra.s.s.
Seeing that he was getting closer and closer to his goal, Aldarion was very motivated. He ate something quickly and resumed the march.
By the time it reached the White Downs it was getting dark and Aldarion did not know whether to try to go a little further or to camp and spend the night in the limits.
His reason told him that he should do the second but he was so eager to finish the trip that he decided to continue a little longer. He knew that it was very dangerous and that he could meet wolves or something else but his emotion won over his reason, and what he ended up convincing was that the moon was going to be almost full that night so he could see a little if It was night.
He had not been traveling for an hour through the White Downs when he began to regret it. Aldarion thought that with the moon he would see something but, without the Moon being full, it would not illuminate enough.
Luckily he ended up finding a good place to camp next to the side of a hill, so he set out to set up camp.
When he lit the bonfire and started to cook a rabbit, the smell of it began to spread through the environment and at that moment Aldarion heard wolves howling in the distance.
"It's going to be a very long night..." Aldarion whispered as he looked around with some trepidation. 'd.a.m.n Aldarion, you've screwed up a lot...'
After the minutes, while eating the rabbit, he heard the howling again, but this time closer to where he was camping. Nervous, he finished eating quickly and prepared for the worst. Aldarion unsheathed his sword and left it beside him. In turn, he took the bow and prepared the arrows.
Time pa.s.sed and Aldarion did not lower his guard. Aldarion kept looking around for any shadow or movement, and he was also listening for any sound he could hear.
Being in concentration for so long and the amount of fatigue acc.u.mulated by the march was making him very sleepy, but he could not sleep. Aldarion knew that if he closed his eyes at any moment there was a great possibility of not opening them again and that did not fit into his plans. Therefore, Aldarion did the impossible not to fall asleep.
He did not know how much time had pa.s.sed, it could be seconds or minutes, but for Aldarion it was an eternity. Suddenly the sounds of footsteps began to be heard.
'They are already here.' Aldarion thought. At that moment Aldarion prepared himself by pointing an arrow in the direction from which the sounds were coming.
What Aldarion could see at that moment was a wolf who stood in front of him while snarling at him. He, without thinking twice shot him and killed him.
The moment the arrow hit him, the wolf gave a squeak of anguish that was very noticeable in the silence of the night. When the screech ended, not a few seconds pa.s.sed when they heard several howls of wolves approaching.
Aldarion realized that there were many and he could not do anything. He quickly sheathed his sword and introduced his belongings into the inventory. After finis.h.i.+ng, he ran away without looking back, hoping that the wolves would not reach him, but that was asking too much.
Aldarion ran and ran for a long time but in the end he began to listen as the wolves started to surround him. He quickly looked for a good position to defend himself and when he found her he stood on it.
The wolves began to show themselves one by one, coming out of different directions. There were about ten wolves and he was completely surrounded.
One of the wolves prepared to attack him and Aldarion watching the approaching wolf counterattack with his sword killing him instantly, but, due to his fatigue, Aldarion lost his balance falling to the side.
This was not going to miss the wise wolves so they all rushed towards him with the intention of killing him as quickly as possible.
The first wolf bit him the arm of the sword with which Aldarion tried to cover himself, but then another wolf came and bit his leg. Each of the wolves began to bite him on one part of his body and Aldarion could not stop screaming in pain. Even though, even failing due to pain and fatigue, he did not stop resisting.
When he began to lose hope, suddenly, Aldarion heard what seemed to be a call horn. At that moment some arrows began to kill very accurately the wolves that hara.s.sed him.
Aldarion did not know if it was due to fatigue or was due to the loss of blood but the only thing he could see before his eyes were closed and he fainted was a group of elves on horseback and one of them approached him and he said something but could not understand it.
