The swaying of the trees slowed and gradually stopped. Morning daylight dimmed into a morose greyness that dropped the temperature to almost zero minus degrees, making me s.h.i.+ver to the bone with the instant hit of cold I felt.

"What's going on?" I called out to Death who came up next to me with War.

Both of them were s.h.i.+vering madly like I was. Frost was forming on our noses; the cold making our face lose colour.

I glanced to Wilfred and Jensen a head of us and noticed they weren't moving. Rather, they were frozen in time.

We stood on alert at the rush of hollow-eye ghosts aiming for us.

War held my hand and Death's as he spoke a spell that enclosed us in a protective ring of white fire; his star earring glowed intensely as he said the spell.

The ghosts shrieked angrily at the sudden wall between us. Those that braved the wall found themselves instantly dissipated. Seeing there was no entry, the ghosts circled our barrier, biding time for a weakness.

"Clever." A different voice spoke to us.

I felt my anger seething inside at the sight of Aidoneus walking towards us from the direction of the academy with the Baleful Rider and his horse trotting by his side.

The ma.s.s of ghosts increased around our barrier. I gulped when I saw the ghost version of Marla within the group.

My arms were going numb despite War's barrier.

"Brrr, isn't it nippy." Freak face Aidoneus cackled. "Your barrier is weakening."

"War?" I looked to him and saw beads of sweat trickling down the sides of his neck.

I pictured the reload speed of the bullet chamber and release mechanisms working faster than sound. When I opened my eyes, I saw the guns in my hands.

"Nice!" War praised me as I showed me his all-silver longsword.

We glanced to Death who held a pair of all silver hand-sized scythes in his hands.

We faced Aidoneus ready for action.

War repelled the barrier with another spell that dissipated the immediate ghost h.o.a.rd around us. He said another spell to wrap the time-frozen knights in a protective barrier.

Death muttered a spell that caused white and orange fire to burn out the remaining ghosts. His Albert chain to his middle coat b.u.t.tons and jacket pocket burned an intense white for the time he said the spell.

"Annoying." Aidoneus growled.

I rushed to him with guns blazing as my brothers took on the Baleful Rider.
