Among the three thousand soldiers, a great half of them had died under this array of sharp arrows in just a brief period of time.
Tang Yin's skills were good, but any great skills would become insufficient under such a dense array of arrows. He squatted on the ground and curled his body into the smallest size possible. He was grasping half a spear in his hand, knocking down the arrows that flew toward him from time to time. Just after a short while, he was already tired and drenched in sweat.
This is not the way! Tang Yin wiped off the cold sweat on his forehead and looked back. Seeing how the corner of the valley wall was less attacked by the arrow rain, he made the decision and pulled the middle-aged man's s.h.i.+rt. He said in a hurry, "Let's go and hide over there!" Under such a desperate situation, he couldn't care less about pretending to be a mute nor did he care if the other person could understand what he was saying. All he did was to pull the middle-aged man's cloth forcefully and ran toward the valley wall. However, after pulling for a while, the middle-aged man's body didn't move. He seemed like he had no intentions of following him. Tang Yin was anxious and turned to exclaim, "Why don't you run? Are you going to stay here and die…"
Halfway through his words, he swallowed the remaining sentence back in. It wasn't that the middle-aged man didn't want to follow him, he just couldn't anymore. A balck arrow shot through his helmet unknowingly and the huge force had pierced through the iron layer and into his brain. The tip of the arrow poked out from the back of his head, and crimson red blood was dripping out.
An arrow of death, the middle-aged man did not even have time to shout before he died.
The man who was still alive and kicking earlier, the 'uncle' who had just saved his life not too long ago had died in the blink of an eye. Tang Yin couldn't react in that brief moment. He looked at the corpse with his eyes wide open, staring blankly.
But in that moment when he was in a daze, a sharp arrow nailed onto his shoulder with a whistle. A m.u.f.fled sound followed, and his clothes and skin were pierced through immediately. The iron arrow head had penetrated deeply into his flesh.
“Oh…” Even such a strong person like Tang Yin let out a m.u.f.fled moan due to the pain. His squatted body sat onto the ground due to the impact.
There was no time to relax at all as countless arrows flew toward him again. Tang Yin didn't even think as he grabbed the arrow that was exposed on the outside of his shoulder and yanked it outward. Puchi, the sharp arrow was pulled out by him. The blood splashed out, but he didn't frown at the extreme pain at that moment. Instead, he had a wide smile.
He was like a rabbit as he rushed toward the corner of the cliff.
Sou, sou, sou— Three arrows flew across him almost grazing his body.
Tang Yin was fast, and his strength of das.h.i.+ng to the front was also great. He jumped three meters away with just one leap, and he didn't stop at all after landing. He continued to roll forward. In a distance of only twenty meters, he had blocked five arrows and dodged more than twenty arrows.
When he finally succeeded to hide under the cliff, he let out a long sigh with relief. Just as he inferred, there weren't many arrows that shot toward the corner of the cliff. Many arrows were blocked midair by the bulging stones on the cliff wall. The occasional reach of arrows was not a huge threat for Tang Yin.
It was only then did he take the opportunity to observe the situation in the valley carefully.
The opponent's array of arrows had already been released for several rounds and the entire valley was covered densely by arrows. Countless arrows filled the entire ground, covering the place with darkness. At the same time, it covered the soldiers' bodies. It's just that it couldn't cover the crimson blood. The blood flowed in between the cracks of the stones and gathered into little river streams that was striking to the eyes.
The strange thing was that the blood was flowing toward his direction constantly, but Tang Yin didn't care. He just thought that it was because he was on a lower land.
The soldiers who managed to escape the array of arrows were still crying in pain. The chilling screams seemed as if it came from h.e.l.l, or should it be said that the valley had already become h.e.l.l.
It felt as if a century had pa.s.sed, and the array of arrows had finally stopped.
There was no wind in the valley, but Tang Yin felt chilly. He reached out to touch his clothes that had long been drenched in sweat as if he had just soaked himself in the rain.
The strength of his body was drained out in a sudden. Tang Yin felt a little dizzy and couldn't stand still. He leaned against the cliff wall and sat down slowly.
He wanted to rest for a while, but the other party didn't give him the chance to do that.
Hong, hong, hong– a neat and rhythmic loud noise was heard at the entrance of the valley. With its continuation, the ground was shaken and trembled.
A hint of shock flashed across Tang Yin's face. He turned to look toward the entrance of the valley but he wished that he didn't look. Now that he had, Tang Yin's heart sank. Outside the valley was a large number of soldiers in silver armor that formed neatly into a square formation. They approached him in a unified pace, one step at a time.
The densely arranged silver-colored armor seemed like a huge mirror under the reflection of the sun, blindingly bright.
At the same time, an invisible but realistic and existing pressure overwhelmed him. The pressure was fl.u.s.tering and suffocating.
Tang Yin had never felt such pressure before.
Without the need to go nearer to count, looking from afar and listening to the soul-shocking footsteps were enough for him to guess the amount of people. This square formation had at least more than ten thousand people. With this many people, they could beat him into meat sauce without having to use any weapon but just with their punches and kicks..
He was a man who had experienced great winds and waves. Before this, he was able to remain calm and steady regardless of how critical the situation was. But now, he panicked. He was in complete panic. This was because he was clear that in this current situation, he had no possibility of surviving. Tang Yin licked his dry lips. Bean-sized sweat dripped constantly down his sideburns. Out of instinct, his body that was sitting on the ground pushed backward with force.
Unfortunately, behind him was a hard and cold cliff wall. There was no way out.
Hu! Tang Yin sighed and shook his head as he smiled bitterly. He had survived even the syndicate fights with rain of bullets, but he really didn't expect that he would have to die on this gruesome cold weapon battlefield. Even more ironically, he didn't even know how he ended up in this situation. His death was such a confusing one.
Could this be G.o.d's punishment for my over-killing? He laughed at himself as he thought. Just at this moment, he realised that the surface under his hand that was pressing against the ground was a little soft.
There were stones everywhere in the valley. No gra.s.s, no dirt. How could it possibly feel soft? He looked down hurriedly to inspect. There were fissures on the cliff wall behind his b.u.t.tocks, and the blood that flowed toward him was flowing into the cracks along those fissures. It was obvious that it was empty inside.
Tang Yin realised this as if he discovered a whole new world and his face was filled with joyous shock. He grabbed his half spear and poked onto the fissures with force. With a tear, the whole blade of the spear pierced through it. If it were the real rocks, he wouldn't have been able to poke his spear so deeply into it with the strength he had now.
It was indeed empty. There was actually a cave here?! His heartbeat increased. He gritted his teeth and lifted his exhausted body up. With both his hands and feet, he dug the gravel at the foot of the cliff wall desperately.
Hua la, hua la!
Soon enough, the active gravel was dug open by him. A cave that was as big as a dog hole opened up at the foot of the wall. It was pitch black inside, he couldn't see anything. As the hole was too small, he still wanted to dig further. However, the cliff walls around the cave was too stiff. Even if he snapped the tip of the spear, he wouldn't be able to dig it open.
Tang Yin looked at this small cave that was only a foot long and looked back at the opponents' square formation that was approaching. There was no time for him to hesitate. He bent his body down and made his way into the cave forcefully.
Although his body was thin, the cave was still too narrow for him. When he was making his way inward, the sharp edges of the stones around him tore his clothes and grazed his flesh like knives.
It was very painful. So painful that he was drenched in sweat and his tears flowed constantly, but he didn't dare to shout. He didn't even dare to make a single sound.
The opponents' soldiers were already very close. As the bottom of the valley was dark and he was also at the corner of the cliff, the opponents might not have seen him yet. However, if he were to just make a sound, it would definitely catch the opponent's attention.
He didn't dare to take the risk, he could only grit his teeth.
When he finally pa.s.sed through the hole and entered the cave, he collapsed. Sweat streamed across the fresh wounds, and he felt burning pain.
Tang Yin sat onto the ground feebly, gasping for air while evaluating the cave. With the faint light that came from the mouth of the cave, he noticed that the cave was quite s.p.a.cious. Of course, the s.p.a.ciousness was only in comparison to the narrow hole.
The cave was a round ramp, and he still couldn't really see how deep it was inside. However, the blood that was flowing in from the hole was flowing inward constantly.
He didn't rest on the ground for long when he heard a sudden scream from the outside.
He was so frightened that he lied on the ground hurriedly and peeked through the hole.
The soldiers in silver armor have entered the bottom of the valley. The square formation of over tens of thousands of people was like a steel behemoth, trampling on the corpses on the ground ruthlessly. As soon as they found a surviving soldier, they would stab them into beehives with their spears regardless of whether or not they were injured.
Tang Yin felt that even if he was a cruel man, the soldiers outside were even colder and more vicious than he was. They were simply killing machines that had no feelings. The cold light from the soldiers' eyes even made Tang Yin, who was bloodthirsty, feel uncomfortable.
A whole of three thousand people had turned into a valley of corpses in only a blink of an eye. This was the cruelty of war.
The mouth of the cave Tang Yin escaped into was narrow and was located at the corner of the cliff wall; it was extremely difficult to be spotted. He thought that he would be able to escape this time, but soon found that he was wrong. The opponents didn't stop after they screened through. They sprinkled kerosene throughout the valley and lighted it up before they left. In the blink of an eye, the valley became a sea of fire.
Thick black smoke flooded inward from the outside of the hole. The fumes made Tang Yin's head spin. He wanted to block the hole, but there was no mud or stones in the cave. With no other choice, he just had to walk toward the inside of the cave. However, the cave wasn't as deep as he thought. After walking for approximately twenty meters, he had already reached the cave's end.
“Cough-” He coughed hard as he felt the wall quickly, hoping to find a way out. After looking for a while, he lost his hope. It was a dead end, there was no other pa.s.sage at all. Finally, Tang Yin sat down helplessly and exhaustingly. The arrow wounds on his shoulder was still bleeding non-stop, draining out the strength from his body.
Is it that I'm just going to die here? Dying inexplicably at an inexplicable place? Tang Yin pulled up his clothes and covered his nose, smiling bitterly as he looked down.
