"What's he screaming about" Ca.s.s yelled over him?

I took a moment to listen to his beeping before my eyes widened in shock.
"He says there's a huge group moving toward our cave and that they'll be here in under 20 minutes."
"Well then what are we waiting for" Ca.s.s yelled before running to pack up her things. "Let's get out of here!"
I couldn't agree with her more, it was time to go. The Legion must have gotten tired of our attacks and started taking a more proactive approach. They must have figured out their patrols would never catch us, so were trying to find out where we were camping out. I knew they would find us eventually because there was only so many places we could be hiding.
It only took us a couple minutes to pack up everything and be ready to go. Before we left I hid a little surprise for the Legion I wasn't 100% sure it would work but, if it did they'd never forget it.
As soon as we left the cave we started heading straight north across the desert. That would take us directly to Novac and hopefully safely.
We kept up a decent pace not flat out sprinting but, a light jog to cover as much distance as possible while keeping our stamina up. Ca.s.s left behind all non-essential equipment to keep her weight down. But, because of my ability as long as I didn't go over my weight limit it didn't matter what I was carrying.
As we got farther away I was hopeful full that the Legion didn't see us leaving and we made a clean get away. Unfortunately my hopes were dashed when ED-D announced that the group had split into two. With a small portion going into the cave and the rest following us. I asked ED-D exactly how many people were following us but, he said they were too close together for him to accurately tell.
Not long later bullet whizzed by landing in the dirt in front of us. I guess I wasn't the only one with a night vision scope.
But, if they were close enough to fire at me then I could fire at them too.
I unslung Ratslayer from my shoulder and spun around activating VATS. With time stopped I managed to get a decent count of how many people were chasing us.
There were about 40 Legionnaires and they weren't the low level ones I had seen on patrol. They all carried rifles and were covered in metal armor with red leather accents. It was the frumentarii!
I only had three shots in VATS so I took my time looking through the soldiers to find the best target.
And then I saw him it was a Legion Centurion the highest ranking type of field soldier. I could tell because of the giant horse hair ploom on his helmet. He was crouched down holding what looked to be an actual heavy caliber sniper rifle and was surrounded by men in heavy armor. It seemed like they were trying to protect him from me. I guess they knew how much of a good shot I was after all this time.
This Centurion must have been the one who fired the shot. They were well over a thousand feet away so he must have been an expert sniper to get his first shot that accurate at that distance. His next shot would would be even more accurate since he could go off of his previous shot and adjust his aim.
With time still stopped I could actually see the barrel of his gun pointed right at my head. If he fire there was a more than decent chance it would hit me.
But, there was one thing he didn't know and that was that I had VATS.
If it was before, with the huge distance between us and the men surrounding him. I would have only had an extremely small change of hitting him.
But, luckily I had enough forethought to get the Sniper Perk increasing my headshot chance in VATS. Even still it was only around a 40% of hitting but, I was willing to take those odds!
I locked in all three shots on his head. The first veered slightly to the side striking one of his guards but, the second was dead accurate.
One interesting thing I noticed after how much I had been using VATS over the weeks was that I could somewhat control where it hit. And I'm not talking the obvious things like arms, head, torso, and legs but, specific places on these parts of the body.
I know this doesn't seem like much but, it was actually incredibly useful.
The Centurion was wearing a full helmet that completely covered his face. And I didn't actually have any armor piercing rounds for the Ratslayer. So if I wanted to make absolutely sure I took him out in one shot I had to hit him in his only uncovered area, his eyes.
As I fire my shots I focused all of my attention on where I wanted to hit.
And, Bang! Just like magic the second shot actually landed right on his scope. It broke through the thin layers of gla.s.s and lodged itself deep into his brain after exploding his eye!"
I only watch long enough to confirm he was dead before turning heel and catching up to Ca.s.s and ED-D. I decided to save my last VATS shot in case I needed it later.
And that's when it happened.
I couldn't see it but, I felt it there was a deafening boom! And even the ground below us shook lightly. It was the trap I had set up before leaving.
In the time we spent here killing Legion soldiers I had managed to collect a huge amount of dynamite. Though calling it dynamite is a little deceptive. Because there isn't actually any nitroglycerin in them. They are actually just red tubes filled with densely packed gun powder. I guess that's why the Legion used so many of them they were cheap and easy to make.
But, even if they aren't actually dynamite that doesn't mean a couple hundred sticks of it wouldn't make a h.e.l.l of an explosion.
Earlier in the week I had the feeling that we wouldn't be able to stay here much longer decided to set up a huge trap that I could set off if we had to run for it.
Using my skills I set up a simple timer using some sc.r.a.p electronics. Before we left the cave I set the timer. And when it hit zero it created a small spark between two exposed wire that would light the fuse on a stick of dynamite setting off a ma.s.sive chain reaction of explosions!
