Before the colossus's gigantic eyes, a small human hovered. He looked like a mosquito compared to the magnificent angel. He held a sword whose blade s.h.i.+mmered like stars in the night sky.
The small man was the one to make the first move. He flew toward the angel's head and swung with his miniscule sword. The angel wrapped his ethereal wings around his body just as the sword came closer. Luna collided with the wings, and the angel was pushed back.
"Look at me moving a mountain!" Theolonius Stalwart said, smiling.
The angel flew backwards for a while before he managed to come to a full stop. He spread his wings. They shot up in the air and started glowing. Colors changed within the wings until they became deep crimson. Light beams shot out into the air then. They flew in curved lines, all of them directed at the mad wizard.
Stalwart flew backwards as beams, ten times larger than he was, chased after him. No matter how many turns he took, the lights would keep their relentless pursuit. Stalwart flew around then headed for The Bishop's colossal angel, red light beams trailing behind him.
The angel drew a long sword, half his size, from his back and thrust it toward the little man. Stalwart immediately dived below the weapon then continued on his way. Beams collided with the sword and spread in different directions. Stalwart, still heading at breakneck speed toward the Bishop, thrust his free arm forward then screamed a spell.
A rift opened above the angel's head, and a beam of light, as wide as a rainforest river, shot down toward the Bishop. The latter immediately coiled his wings around him. They began sparkling, as though made out of diamond. The beam descended on the angel in a thundering boom, and the latter shook and staggered.
Down below, General Ulrich had just regained his composure. The fight between Stalwart and The Bishop had shaken him out of his daze. He looked at the soldiers and saw that they were as confused as he was. He looked up once more, and saw Stalwart thrusting his sword at the angel.
A strident, deafening noise stung Ulrich's ears as Luna grazed the angel's coiled wings. Everybody around him covered their ears. Ulrich felt a powerful, invisible presence push him down toward the ground. It felt as though his lungs were about to burst.
"Where's the king?" he managed to scream, but n.o.body answered. All soldiers were moaning, holding their ears as they fell to their knees. "Where's the king?!" he screamed once more.
He tried to reach the king's tent but a thundering explosion above him diverted his attention. He looked up to see Stalwart and The Bishop clas.h.i.+ng swords with each other. Stalwart, despite his miniscule size, was holding his ground against the mountain sized angel.
Both swords were locked while neither managed to push the other back. The Bishop shot his wings upwards as soon as Stalwart's beam dissipated. Their color changed from deep crimson to bright orange. Then light beams shot out into the sky once more.
Stalwart detached himself from the Bishop and flew away. Orange beams chased him, this time faster, but much thinner. The mad wizard flew through the air like a shooting star. No matter how many spells he shot at the beams, they wouldn't dissipate. Even when he slashed them with the Celestial weapon, the beams wouldn't give up their relentless pursuit.
"What is happening here?" Ulrich heard some soldiers whisper.
"These aren't human, they're G.o.ds playing with our lives..." another gasped.
"Where's the king?!" Ulrich screamed at his men.
They all turned to look at the general. It seemed they hadn't realized where they were yet. Some of them were inspecting their clothes, others were looking over the hill toward Stalwart's soldiers. They all seemed to remember they were in a war, slowly but surely.
Ulrich hurried to the king's tent, only to find it empty. He heard his soldiers cheering. Then he came rus.h.i.+ng outside. He looked up and saw Stalwart struggling as the orange light beams had coiled around him and bound him.
The Bishop's angel slowly advanced toward the mad wizard. He had his sword held up high, ready to cleave Stalwart in half. Ulrich had also noticed that the sky above them darkened. Gray clouds merged above the angel. General Ulrich, having witnessed the mad wizard's might more than once in his long life, knew what the nimbus above them meant.
His heart began racing against his chest. His soldiers cheered for the angel to execute the trapped mad wizard. Ulrich knew better. His eyes darted in all directions, looking for a way out of this predicament. The king must have gone with the baroness. He was alone, and so were the soldiers.
"GET OUT OF HERE!" He screamed. He ran toward his men, gesticulating with his arms as he went. "Find a rock or a solid surface to hide under. Stalwart's going to retaliate!"
"What are you talking about boss?" one of the soldiers asked. He looked happy, almost euphoric. "Look at the angel above. He'll rid us of the wizard and his madness."
The other soldiers nodded then diverted their attention on the angel above. They seemed mesmerized by the sight. Ulrich couldn't understand how they didn't see Stalwart's counter attack coming. He screamed and pulled, but the soldiers wouldn't listen.
He'd given up when the angel was within attacking range. He knew Stalwart wouldn't go down easily. Despite the angel's size and his gigantic sword, Stalwart was still able to stand toe to toe against him. This wasn't going to end well, especially for the people watching. He found a rock with a cavity large enough to hold him and curled inside it.
At that moment, the angel struck. He brought his weapon down on Stalwart's head. It looked like someone was attempting to cut a fly with a sword. Just as the weapon was about to collide with the mad wizard, lightning flashed above them.
Ulrich saw the first bolt land amidst his men. One of them got instantly charred. The soldiers, however, didn't seem to mind. Their eyes were glued on the flying colossus above them. They were cheering for him, oblivious to the impending doom that was about to befall them.
Another lightning bolt landed just before Ulrich's eyes, and the latter retreated until his back was completely plastered against the rock. He wished he could merge with it. He wished he was nothing but dust, anything but witness his own men getting slaughtered.
More lightning bolts descended. Soon, the battlefield was filled with lightning, raining down on the unsuspecting soldiers. The Bishop screamed; a roar that shook the rock under which Ulrich hid. The lightning bolts had easily found their target. Because of the angel's size, it was impossible for him to dodge all the devastating attacks.
He immediately retreated, shooting back toward Rolar in the blink of an eye. The lightning shower, now free to descend upon the soldiers below, charred them all to the bone. Ulrich coiled in a foetus position as he watched his men scream and wail as lightning filled them with holes.
The battlefield smelled of burnt skin and charred meat. Blood flowed down the hill like a river. Every subsequent lightning bolt would crystallize some of the blood. Ulrich watched in horror as every last man from King Nicholas's army was reduced to ash.
