"...what kind of person can't at least use a novice spell?"

"..."

Oh. So this is one of those 'everyone has mana you dingus' worlds. That would uh. Make me pretty dumb.

"Could you teach me? I don't have any spells of those elements yet, not any idea how to go about manipulating them."

"Sure but seeing as Sir is a Wolfkin, magic shouldn't be your specialty anyway... wouldn't you more specialize in using mana to empower yourself as blood magic?"

'What magic? Huh? I'm so lost. Also you think I'm a wolf? Alrighty. Better just laugh it off.'

"Haha, yeah but I have some interests in it. Also I've been on my own for a long time, and was never taught a lot of things... so I don't have any clue how to use blood magic."

Luna's eyes clearly widened in shock as she stared at me. Finally she shook her head, looking almost like she was having a headache.

'Hey are you okay? I might be able to buy an aspirin for you yknow? You probably netted me enough DP after 3 days.'

She stood up, and said "can you sense mana's movements at all?"

I could tell she wasn't expecting me to say yes, as she was about to continue, so I quickly interjected "yeah I can see magic energy if I focus" before she could.

Luna once again gawked at me, but for a shorter time as she seemed to be getting used to the weird occurrences(by her standards).

'He's nameless, doesn't know basic warrior techniques like using blood mana to fortify and empower the body, and can somehow sense magic despite being surprised by a Catkin having talent for magic?! I really can't understand you sir!'

She sighed, putting off her thoughts, and raised a hand, and I tightened the "muscle" in my eyes that let the view of magic appear in my eyes.

"Spirits of the wind, gather to my call,"

I blinked. The mana in the air and mana flowing from her hand was intermingling above her hand.

"and form my desire."

It looked like a 'structure' of mana was being formed, which resolved into a sort of crescent which was shaped somewhat closer to a croissant than the moon, stretched out a bit.

"Cut through, and be rent apart! Blade of Wind!"

Finally the mana released and a blade of air struck forth and cut into the ground nearby, throwing some dirt up as the mana structure collapsed and released a puff of air in all directions.

'Okay what the f.u.c.k. Why was there a whole cringed-as-f.u.c.k chant.'

"So uh... wanna explain the stages there...?"

"Huh? Well... sure? I mean it's pretty basic. You gather the energy with the opening line, and configure it into your mental image, and then finish it with the correct spell verse to give it the proper spell intent."

'...huh? That's necessary? But when I cast magic, that just all happens at once. My mana makes the structure, the surrounding mana infuses, and the intent is loaded by my will all at once...'

I thought for a moment before a memory came to mind.

*<...foxkin are="" extinct="" because="" many="" feared="" their="" instant-magic...="">*

Oh yeah. The dungeon did say something along those lines. Wait did that mean...

I stood up, and moved forward. I gathered my focus, and began to pull my mana into my hand, imagining the shape and function of the blade of wind spell. I pulled it together, and after pulling my mana into the structure and infusing it, willed it with the phrase "WINDBLADE!"

Luna's jaw dropped once again, and stayed firmly planted on the ground as with a single word, I replicated her spell.

'Huh the effects aren't that great though. It would only cut to the bone before dissipating, while a single FoxFire can blow a head off. Then again, it only uses 1 Mana, so I guess it only makes sense.'

"Hey Luna? How is magic ranked? You mentioned something about Novice spells right?"

"Uh...y-yeah... spells come in one of 9 tiers, based on complexity... a simple thing like forming air into a blade, is tier-0. Novice. Same as creating a sphere of light or lifting water as a globe..."

"It goes all the way to tier-7, which is when you utilize one of the laws of the world in a spell, approaching the realm of the G.o.ds. Tier-8 spells are said to be able to change or even break the laws of the world, while legends say a Tier-9 spell can create an entire new world."

"Oh. Well that's pretty interesting." 'On a side note, I wonder if using Identify on spells can tell me the tier?'

Luna was trying to wrap her head around what just happened. How could someone just cast a spell with just the phrase of intent, and reduced to a word at that!

'Foxfire!'

I sat there as three small fireb.a.l.l.s appeared in my hand and began bobbing about. I used the Identify skill and the data was as such:

FoxFire III: Tier-0 Fire Spell

A signature spell of the Kitsune.

'Huh, so even tier-0's have such a difference in power and mana? I guess if you used enough mana, theoretically even a Tier-0 spell could kill a G.o.d or destroy a planet. So instead of basing spell level by power, it's by complexity huh.'

Luna felt like she was losing her mind. It was as if the G.o.ds had decided to throw a miracle in the form of a clueless idiot at her for fun!

Not only did he cast the first spell with a single word, he cast a spell of completely different elements by merely staring at his palm! Sure, maybe she could reason that he had the bloodline of an air elemental that gave him a strong affinity capable of skipping over the gathering of spirits, and just using his own mental focus to structure it, but fire as well?

'Do you expect me to believe you have even one elemental bloodline of such power while looking like a normal Beastkin? Much less two? Can you be more exaggerated!'

Luna kept trying to think of anything at all. The phrase 'instantaneous magic' crossed her mind, and reminded her of a story shed once heard. A story of a Beastkin tribe with no innate Magic's like her "NightSight", but rather could simply instantaneously use any magic.

"Uh... Sir..."

"Huh?" I turned and regarded Luna who had a suspicious expression as she studied my eyes, then my ears, and finally my tail.

'Now that I'm thinking that way, that wouldn't be a common wolf color, and the tail looks more like that too...'

"Are you by any chance... a Foxkin?"

"Oh. Right. Throwing around 'Instant Magic' probably outed me. But it's not like I really meant to hide it in the first place. She's the one who a.s.sumed I'm a wolf... not my fault she can't see the obvious considering the tails and physical features are totally different. I'm obviously not a physical type..."

I came to realize I'd been talking to myself aloud, as I looked back at the Neko.

She looked somehow both eager, full of some sort of bright, joyful suspense, and mortification, a mix of shame and self-ridicule.

"So you're... how are... you're not extinct. But that means... that you can... and they would... oh. Oh wow."

Finally her face settled on concern and determination.

"Sir!"

"Uh y-yes!" I couldn't help it. The shy, hurt girl becoming so forceful had me immediately giving ground.

"Are you aware of what being a Foxkin fully implies?"

"...not at all no."

"Honestly... at this rate you're going to tell me you have no idea the dangers of the Mind Flayers living in the caves west of the forest, and of the Demon on the mountain north of here."

"..."

"No. No you can't be serious. There's no way. You can't possibly not have ever gone around the back of the hill and seen the giant monster on the mountain in the distance."

"...I've only been here about a week now y'know..."

"WHAT???"

"Actually it's the 9th day since I got here..."

"... you have no idea about the dangers, which likely means you've no idea of this places history, don't you?"

"Not a clue."

I'll be honest. When Luna full up swooned and fainted, I barely reacted in time to catch her. As it is, I feel like I'll become accused of child abuse if I keep scaring her. She looked like she was about to have an aneurysm.
