I was sleeping peacefully, until I woke up with a VERY sudden jolt. I felt like I was electrified.

I looked up to see all the other Dungeon Guardians awake and agitated, Fenrir getting up from lying next to me, fur on end as Aqua slapped about the water in the lake.

I got up to a crouch, my menu coming into focus, already open to the map and showing intruders in the orchard.

We were... under attack?!

My alarm pa.s.sed through the soul network, everyone immediately gearing up for a fight, and gathering to the entrance as silently as we could, Luna still peacefully asleep.

I wanted to see the situation, but Isen reached out an arm, blocking me. He then grabbed a at the air, and shadows wrapped around his hand, forming a snarling red mask.

He put the strange mask on, and as he stepped forward his image seemed to s.h.i.+ver and fall apart into multiple ribbons of darkness, leaving him vanished.

'Ah... he did apparently learn the way of shadows... plus as a shadow samurai he's undoubtedly got stealth skills.'

'I should ask him to teach me sometime.'

I felt him examining the outsiders.

Suddenly an image swam by in my mind, of people grabbing apples.

It was just for an instant, but I could see what Isen saw!

'I am going to get that surveillance upgrade next I swear!'

With that, I checked the Dungeon map. As I thought, now that Isen has seen the targets, the Dungeon can identify their species and appearance, which I can see if I click on their icon.

3 humans, a mother and 2 children. The mother is covered in blood, and appears injured as she carries a basket with... oh my.

Make that 4 humans, there's a baby in the basket who's icon blends with the mother. The children and baby look only scratched but the mother...

I saw the ripped open clothes and the marks. I could guess that somebody had done something to her and recently.

Isen moves closer, and some sound filtered in through the heightened connection.

"...quickly children, we need to hurry."

"Are the bad men coming mommy? Are they gonna do to me what they did to you, sticking those things in me?" Asked the daughter, and I felt my teeth grind.

These were people. Mother and children. And they were attacked, and while the mother was raped, the children had to watch.

Anger. Rage. Whatever word you call it, it's too small for what I felt.

They had lives. Loved ones. Hopes, dreams... and this is the state they are left in by other people.

We all have lives, emotions, souls, choices.

And some people... took that away.

A scrabbling sound in the distance. Laughter. The children cowered behind their mother as she stood before them, trembling as out of the woods walked some men. Leather armor. Dull, rusty swords.

"Hehe... cmon... no need to run miss... we were having so much fun last night... let the girlie enjoy it too!"

'Hate. Hate. Hate hate hate hate hate. HATE.'

"Cmon, finish with this broad quick Chez, we need to get going. Bit too close to Mind Flayer territory."

'Everyone is a person. What right do I have to decide who lives and dies? Obviously I should protect these people, but can I kill someone? They're people! Not Goblins!'

"You really gonna do his here? We are in the presence of that 'G.o.d' by technicality you know."

'But... goblins have lives too right? They are also individuals, even if they're so dumb they are practically animals, they're smart enough to make weapons. Did I do wrong to end those lives?'

"Please, that 'G.o.d' of a pathetic and dead race? He's a demon now ain't he? Maybe he'll enjoy his almighty view of this, so just enjoy the lil tyke."

'Okay. f.u.c.k that. f.u.c.k you. I don't care anymore. Yeah, you got lives and issues of your own, and yeah it's unfair for me to just decide you should die. But I don't care. f.u.c.k. You.'

'I'll be judge, jury, and executioner. I will NOT feel guilty for killing these pathetic EXCUSES for intelligent beings!'

I think the comment about the pathetic dead race set me off. In all I'd seen, through the shrine, my own self, and especially in the way Luna had talked about them... the Foxkin has been important.

They had been feared, respected. They built homes of wood and paper instead of stone, and made them beautiful. They were built for magic, and filled with wonder to the world.

They... we... had been a race that I was proud to be a part of in some strange way. I know in my past life I'd had moments where I felt ashamed to be human, felt shame at what we had done. Pollution, genocide, war. This world's humans weren't much better.

Sure some were great, but as a species, they SUCKED. But being a Kitsune... I felt proud. To a weird extent. I guess at some point I began to think of myself as truly a Foxkin. I don't think of myself as a human being anymore. And I like it that way.

So when added with everything else... my hesitation was gone. I understood a simple fact.

'My job is to defend this place, by murdering all who enter. But I haven't killed Luna, in fact I saved her, because I viewed what I did as the right thing. My ideas of right and wrong might not line up with this world's philosophy, but I don't care.'

'If you decide to do what I consider unforgivable, I will kill you. That is my right as a living being. I don't care if it's unimaginably selfish or cruel. I will kill you for my own morals, even if you don't share them.'

'Because, just f.u.c.kING because, quite simply, YOU. DESERVE. TO. f.u.c.kING. DIE.'
