'Yeah... that's definitely me in that painting.'

Luna finally walked up a little. "Is... this a prophecy?"

I shot her a look. What prophecy? You can't predict the future! It would cause so many freaking paradoxes if you could!

"Prophecy... are those... common...?"

She shook her head vehemently. "Not at all. Only very special people can make prophecies, and even then they won't necessarily happen."

Oh! This is one of those "possible futures" type of prophecy concepts. Okay. I can accept that.

"But uh... why is that me?"

Luna pointed. "Look at the t.i.tle."

I looked and... yeah that seemed appropriate.

'The Final Fox.'

Okay. Pause. Am I... some sort of chosen one? Like... I need context!

I looked at the surroundings in the image.

I was standing in the Glade, and it was... messed up? It was twisting at the edges, and in the sky was another world, upside down, made of black spires and gla.s.s, and it seemed to be falling.

To my left the first seemed to swing up as a wave of earth, a wall of ground swinging up like a trapdoor and still covered in trees with gravity gone sideways.

The Fox G.o.d's mountain was in the background, s.h.i.+ning with a great light as wings of white flame burned beyond it.

And in the middle was me, arms outstretched, surrounded by globes of indistinct light swirling into a multicolored ring, with my blade stabbed into the ground by me, and blood dripping down my clothes.

I looked like I was in pain... yeah... uh.

'I do NOT LIKE THIS FUTURE.'

Around me in the image were several imprints of people, outlined in white, blue, gold, black, red, and purple light.

"Hey... how likely is it this WILL NOT HAPPEN? Cause this looks ridiculous and impossible."

Luna shrugged, mute with shock.

"Okay. I'm not panicking. This is normal. I'm a reincarnation, so obviously there's gonna be s big deal about my existence in this worlds timeline. Breath."

So with that I now have a ma.s.sive mystery: what the actual HECK is this supposed to mean? What is HAPPENING? And who have none of the ghosts mentioned this to me?

I scanned through the building, noting where the supports and walls lay, and estimating how long ago this painting had been destroyed.

'Oh d.a.m.n. This guy has been gone a lot longer than the genocide of the Kitsune occurred. How did the blacksmith know to help me find it?'

Agh... how am I supposed to know what the heck is happening there? Future prediction bulls.h.i.+t is annoying when you actually need to deal with it.

"Well... we can do anything right now?" I said, my voice cracking a little midway.

"Y-you can't just... ignore a prophecy!" Luna yelled, flapping her arms about.

"Well, I can't do anything about it, so yes, actually. I can ignore a prophecy right now, and I will. Cause I gotta keep moving until I fix my current problems, THEN focus on this. So let's keep going for now."

Fenrir simply began walking out. I don't think he really cared from the beginning, as he doesn't view the future as something to think about. He's more an "in the moment" kinda wolf.

I just walked out, trying to ignore ALL that s.h.i.+t.

Luna just kinda stares for a bit, looked at us with a 'are you serious?' Look, and then finally began to run after us when she realized we were seriously leaving.

Other things were in that building, masks, staffs, a robe tattered and ripped.

I kept walking, but I felt like there was something to all the stuff left lying around.

I looked around and wondered. 'Test of Ceremony... maybe I should take something? I got a weird feeling.

A stylized white porcelain mask caught my eye.

It would cover just the top half of your face, and was a fox mask.

The ears actually seemed like they would match up in position to my own, the snout curved with the nose, and my mouth and jaw would be left clear.

Red lines and lotus petals painted onto it around the eyes and down in stylish streaks gave a sleek, sharp design.

I picked it up. 'This is... in surprisingly good condition.'

It didn't have a string to wear it though... unless...

I could see some mana was along the edges...

I put it on, and after letting go, it simply stayed on without me holding it.

I looked at Luna. "What do you think? I didn't have this in that prophecy, right?"

She looked at me. "It's a bit... much."

I pulled it off, and then stuck it on the side of my head, an image from some anime popping into my head.

"Yeah that's a bit better."

I nodded. Good we got that sorted out.

And as I left, I felt much more at ease for some reason.

'Why do I CARE about having something from here? Is it because something should be remembered...?'

I shook my head, and then nervously felt for the mask to make sure I hadn't thrown it off.

"Alright, let's go!" I walked up the mountain path, yet another endless staircase.

Luna dragged her feet behind me. "So... much... walking..."

"Hey! You got a NAP! I got a... testing experience."

"Uh-Huh. Right. Whatever that means."

"You know what?"

"No, what?"

"...shut up."

Luna gave me a look, and one of her hands began to stroke Scorn...

"Ahahaha! Just kidding!" I tried to ignore my sudden cold sweat. Foxes can she be threatening! Why is Luna suddenly scary after this adventure?

Actually, I think I've always been kinda scared of women? Angry women especially? Yeah my memories that I DO have seem to agree with that idea.

"Hey look! The 7th Test!" I yell, pointing ahead just trying to change the topic.

As Luna turned to look I let out a sigh of relief. "Whew!"

The 7th Test was... different. For one it was made of stone.

Smooth white granite formed a building, with an impressive Forrest set out by grand pillars.

'Is it just me, or does that look like a mausoleum. That's just me, RIGHT?!'

"The Test of Death." Luna read aloud.

That is NOT HELPING this bad feeling I have right now.

We slowly walked in the open entryway, no door in sight. In the center of the room was a table, smooth and ornate.

To the side was a pile of rotted wood, perhaps once a chair or table?

Fenrir looked at me. "This place has the scent of death... even more so than the other tests. It smells like the town did."

I shakily sighed. "Yeah buddy, I got that same uneasy feeling."
