Looking up sweat gushed from his forehead and his teeth were chattering slightly. The amiable kid that he had just threatened was looming over him, the man was now a small kitten trapped beneath a vicious dog.
This man had always considered himself one of the more elite fighters of D Company. As far as he and everyone else in D Company was concerned, they were every bit as strong as the other Companies and they were unjustly being persecuted which prevented them from showing their true strength. When Muscles had told him to go find Aker he had scoffed at the idea. Why would they need anyone else to help out, but Muscles conviction and speech convinced him to take to flight and find Aker.
In fact, this man already had a pretty good understanding of who the strong fighters were within D Company. While there were a lot of people in D Company and he couldn't possibly bother to know every single person within the squad, the strongest and most dominate people had a way of rising to the top and being known by everyone. When Muscles asked him to find Aker he was stumped and honestly had no idea where to begin, that's when he thought of the chow hall. Since everyone would be gathered together with that new puer nuntius cooking it should have been easy to call out and have Aker respond.
Going back just a few days ago this would have been a monumental and near impossible task as the squad would never eat together in a group, that is until the new puer nuntius showed up.
Everyone only accidentally got together the first day in celebration, any reason to drink right? It was just that the cooking was so over the top in that first meal and that puer nuntius would be cooking breakfast and dinner each day, unless they absolutely weren't allowed to make it to the chow hall who would miss it?

As Aker's lifeless eyes made contact with his, the man felt his body s.h.i.+vering and the sweating intensified. This man still lying on the floor was in a stupor as he was still trying to figure out exactly what happened. It wasn't just him; the entire chow hall lost the liveliness it had a moment ago and all eyes were fixated on the young puer nuntius.
"Hey, did he just slap Brendon senseless? I'm finding it hard to believe even if I saw it happen..." The fish-eyed man who was closest to the situation spouted out; his eyes were bulging even further than before which if it wasn't for Aker's move would have been the focus of attention.
"There's no doubt about it, I mean the hand print outline is still there. I'm not 100% certain but I think it's still swelling up larger." While still eating his burger he spoke, this conniving fellow wasn't one to allow an opportunity to slip away. While he was eating, talking and everyone's attention was on the situation, he had sneaked away another two burgers quietly. His mischievous smile indicated he was proud of himself and hinted that he might try and s.n.a.t.c.h a few more.
"H..how...dddare...youuu....slap...I...mean....hhh.it...me!" The sound of being aggrieved struck everyone's ears at the same time. It was one thing to be beaten up by those who are recognized by everyone as the crème de la crème, but to be slapped to the ground in front of the entire Company by the errand boy, he might as well go find a tree and rope.
Everyone was still in a state of utter and total shock or denial over the situation for several reasons. First this new puer nuntius had been amiable and courteous for the first few days he had been here. He had treated all of the fighters as seniors and did their bidding without complaint. When they told him to cook and do other menial task for three hundred people, he rolled up his sleeves and got to work without complaint. His att.i.tude had been nothing like this haughty kid who pummeled and then cornered the Brendon on the ground.
Secondly, while Brendon was not anywhere near the strongest fighter in the squad, he was far from the weakest. His strength was somewhere near the upper middle and it sounded like in the last day he had made serious headway towards breaking through the Skin level of the Body Conditioning which would push him to the front of the Company in strength. When Aker made his move, Brendon ended up on the floor without a chance to block or counter. Worse yet, it wasn't even that Aker sneak attacked or used some trick to get one over on him, he simply picked his hand up into the air and swung down and across his face.
"You should know I have made a promise and oath to myself that I would never allow anyone to threaten me again. You can consider this a warning if in the future you feel the need to threaten me remember this moment and consider it carefully."
As Aker spoke every single fighter with Company D was taking note as well. The cold and lifeless sound of his voice as it explained his reasons was enough for them all to realize that every person had their reverse scale, and for Aker it seemed to be threatening him. As everyone was considering this, it was as if all three hundred men came to a sudden thought together, if he reacted this way when being threatened how would he react if someone actually made a move on him?
Collectively the entire room held its breath as an unpleasant wind made its way through as they all exhaled together. For all three hundred men here, it was on clear display that their new puer nuntius was exceedingly strong.
Aker had no intentions of displaying his strength before the rest of the squad, there was no calculated move or anything such as that. While he didn't want to start as a puer nuntius and that d.a.m.ned military recruiter had ignored him completely, he wasn't all that upset with his role of puer nuntius either. It had only been two days since he joined this Frail Fighters and he had wormed his way into the kitchen as the defacto chef and just earlier today he had found that he has a forge with all the material he could want to himself.
He had already cleaned up his practice area and had a decent enough setup to practice with all his weapons and different variations. He would still easily be able to practice his Dizi and work on his magical engineering without any interruption or problems. The planet had dense nature particles and he would be able to become a Source Core magic fighter in one to two months if his guess was right. While Aker would have preferred to have joined the military as a fighter, he wasn't unhappy with his current role either.
Aker had a nagging and unforgettable chip on his shoulder since he left The Pit. Alex had threatened his life repeatedly and he never had an opportunity to take care of it. If Vance wouldn't have allowed Aker to send that letter thus causing Alex mental anguish, it could have become Aker's heart demon. On the s.h.i.+p when traveling it wasn't until the pirates threatened Sarah and her mom that Aker decided to act, until that moment he was lost in his own excuses.
Even after landing on the planet when Clyde first tried to take away Sarah and her mom, he tried to talk to them and even offered to negotiate and pay off her debt. Clyde yelled and screamed at Aker and even sent his servant to beat Aker to teach him a lesson, but it was only going to be a beating so he didn't think he needed to escalate to that level. Despite all of that Aker didn't lose his calm and attack, he had simply defended himself; it wasn't until Clyde had threatened Aker's life that his demeanor att.i.tude changed and Aker went on the offensive.
It was that moment when Vance stopped Aker's blade from putting an eighth orifice in Clyde that Aker's att.i.tude changed and his resolve in these matters would forever be altered. It was that moment that Aker decided that he would never allow anyone to threaten him again, no matter the consequences.
At that time Aker wanted to argue with Vance, "how could we consider getting our revenge if we allow others to threaten us this way?" but he held his tongue. Since that moment and that thought crossed his mind and he was forced to let another get away after threatening him he couldn't help but chide himself about it.
When Aker responded back to Brendon, he had been cordial and even responded back to a random person asking for him. His att.i.tude when responding back hadn't been something that one would consider rude by any standard and yet Brendon had still threatened Aker.
As Brendon looked up at Aker it was evident to everyone present, his mind was in complete conflict. After Aker explained his reason for attacking the entire room collectively nodded their heads up and down in agreement with Aker's thoughts. Would they slap someone to the ground if they were threatened? Perhaps yes...perhaps no but they wouldn't fault Aker for it either. Clearly Brendon was in the wrong in this situation which was the reason for Brendon's conflicted mind.
It was evident the proper response for Brendon was to apologize but how could that possibly happen after being slapped to the ground? Wouldn't that almost be the equivalent of thanking Aker for slapping him? Since that was the case Brendon was at an impa.s.se as for how to move forward.
It was at this moment that Aker could see the regret and apologetic aura of Brendon "Let's forget about this and pretend as if it never happened, I understand that you were only behaving that way because you were worried about your Senior Brother. Speaking of your Senior Brother, you had said that he had sent for me, can I ask why?"
Brendon felt a wave of relief at Aker's words. It was evident that Aker was much stronger than him, he didn't know how much stronger, but it had to be enough that Aker could have hurt and embarra.s.sed him a lot more than he did.
Brendon shuttered at the thought, he didn't even see Aker's attack, he was simply on the ground before he knew what happened. Even following Aker taking it easy on him, Aker went further and gave him an excuse for his actions "Yes, I temporarily lost my mind because I was upset due to my Big Brother Muscles being in trouble..." A relieved breath left Brendon's mouth as he saw that Aker didn't dispute his statement.
Seeing that Aker had truly let him go and allowed him to find an excuse for his actions as well as his loss, he was grateful. Despite how grateful he was his voice turned solemn as he spoke "Big Brother was out showing off his new sword. No matter how many times everyone asked him, he wouldn't tell anyone where it came from. We were in the base communal practice areas where all of the members from all of the Companies would be able to see and be jealous. As we were practicing one of the fighters from C Company saw the sword and declared that it wasn't fit to be owned by someone from the Frail Fighters and that he needed to hand it over."
At this point it wasn't just Aker listening in, everyone in the entire chow hall was completely focused as Brendon recounted what happened.
"After Big Brother Muscles told them to go to h.e.l.l, the members from C Company came over and started ganging up and attacking him. The other members from D Company seeing that Big Brother was getting ganged up on jumped into the fight. This led to somewhere between thirty or forty of us fighting...."
"Then why are you here and not over there fighting with them, quickly slap him again! Anyone who could abandon someone they call Big Brother should be slapped!" The fish eyed man's eyes bulged again, this time everyone did notice and it was a site that could cause one's skin to crawl. It gave the impression that he should have a hook in his mouth, it looked unnatural to not have a hook in his mouth.
"Let me finish dammit, I will slap your eyes into your head!"
"Hahahahahahahahahaha" The entire room roared in laughter, they had all heard someone yell I will slap your eyes out of your head, but this was the first time someone had ever threatened to slap someone's eyes into their head.
The fish eyed man hearing this shut his mouth but his eyes started pulsating in anger.
For everyone in the Company this was just a fight between Companies, this stuff happened all the time. They were all starting to get a little irritated that someone would interrupt when Aker was serving dinner at this point for something as trifling as this.
"It would have just been a normal brawl, that was until Leader Nathan Kula showed up and reprimanded Big Brother Muscles for starting the fight. He told him that he would need to give up that sword as compensation to the guys from C Company for the trouble that D Company Started with them."
It was at this point that everyone in the room who had been laughing and starting to move on from this issue were suddenly enraged. To think that those b.a.s.t.a.r.ds from C Company would use their leader's status to steal from Muscles just because he was from D Company.
At this moment everyone had the same thought, let's go teach those b.a.s.t.a.r.ds from C Company a lesson.
"I'm a.s.suming there is more to the story since you are here for me to help Shawn right?" Aker who was listening realized that there must be something else happening on account of Brendon's search for him. If the sword was already taken just like that, what would Aker be able to do about it?
"That's right, Leader Nathan Kula told those of us from D Company that he was feeling magnanimous and decided that he would allow Big Brother an opportunity to make amends and keep his sword. He would allow someone from our D Company to represent them in a fight and if he could win then the fighters from C Company would give back the sword and Leader Nathan said he would even apologize for misunderstanding the situation."
"I understand the situation now, but if that's the case then why does Muscles want you to bring our puer nuntius over instead of Hendrix?" One of the fighters in the group asked out.
"Ya, it seems that if we need to have someone fight C Company then it should be Hendrix for sure. This isn't just about Muscles and his sword anymore; this is about the dignity of the entire D Company. Dammit man, do you want them to call us Frail Fighters forever?" Fish eyes had forgotten all about the earlier incidents and was completely consumed with the fight against C Company.
"That's why Big Brother Muscles told me to get Aker..." Now without a doubt in his eyes as he spoke, he looked up and said "Big Brother said that Aker is the strongest in the whole Company."
