Chapter 11

The couple quickly turned their heads towards the door and gape in embarra.s.sment at their silly actions. But their awkwardness soon turn to excitement as they realized the ident.i.ty of the person at the door.

"Saya my dear! Let me look at you. I missed you so much," Alexis exclaimed as she gave her G.o.ddaughter a tight hug.

Saya hugged Alexis's tall frame. Underneath her white lab coat, she wore a simple long sleeve black s.h.i.+rt and a matching black business skirt. The outfit was completed by black suede loafers. It was simple and professional, yet her aunt's wild green eyes, light auburn hair, and fairy-like face made the outfit so much more enchanting than it was.

Sota stood by watching the duo hug each other and when he couldn't wait anymore he wrapped both women in his arms, chuckling loudly all the while.

"Little Saya. You haven't grown much, huh. So much like your momma," Sota stated.

Breaking out of her husband's embrace she pinched his side firmly at his insensitive words.

"Honey ouch. That hurts! Stop! I was just stating the truth. She's pet.i.te like Katherine. Their like imps."

Alexis pinched harder unhappy with her husband's words. Alexis had a strong complex when it came to Katherine and the years haven't cooled down her loyalty to her best friend a bit. That complex was also transferred to her best friend's daughter. She wouldn't let anyone get away with making fun of them not even her own husband.

"Ouch, ouch, honey I meant they are both short like imps. I didn't mean that they look like imps. Of course not that! They are stunningly beautiful anyone with eyes can see that," said Sota hoping his praises were enough to satisfy his wife.

Alexis stopped her pinching and instantly agreed with her husband.

"Yes, they are!"

Sota couldn't help but groan inwardly at his wife's unfair att.i.tude.

"Hahahaha. You two haven't changed. Auntie, you still have uncle Sota on a lease," Saya teased.

The trio moved to a circular table in the middle of the office. Alexis's office was elegant and s.p.a.cious. A mountain of paperwork filled her big wooden oak desk and behind her desk was a matching and ma.s.sive bookshelf built within the wall. It was filled with medical books but right smack in the middle were family pictures that were staged to be the main attraction. The office also boasted a huge soft sofa that two adults could comfortably sleep in. The three chatted casually and happily catching up on their missed two years.

"Sweetie, how was your first day? Did you find your cla.s.sroom okay? It's a big campus. How about your cla.s.ses? Did you like your teachers? If you have any problems let auntie know."

Alexis fawn over Saya like a mother hen. "Honey give her some s.p.a.ce. It's only her first day."

Saya smiled at her G.o.dparents. 'Should I let them know what happen with Haru? No, I better not. I don't want them to worry and they'll probably tell my parents and I don't want that,' she thought.

'How did Haru even know I was to meet them today?' Saya pondered.

Not wanting her aunt and uncle to get suspicious Saya told them about her day not mentioning what happened with Haru.

"My first cla.s.s was okay. It ended abruptly. I really wanted to see you both today so I skip my next cla.s.ses. I know, I know, that's not very good of me, especially on my first day. But I haven't seen you two and I missed you dearly." Saya exaggerated but she didn't technically lie. She did miss her G.o.dparents.

"Aww, you're so sweet. Did you hear that darling? Why couldn't we have a daughter like Saya? Instead, we got stuck with that ungrateful son who only contacts us when he needs something," Alexis said, whining to her husband.

Sota ignored his wife's criticism because he knew his wife just missed their son who was studying abroad. Instead, he fixed his gaze on Saya not missing the slight pause she gave before her overly sweet and pitchy speech about missing them. His instinct told him something was wrong. He might be a lovestruck fool when it came to his enchanting wife and he was known to be boisterous and rowdy at times, but he was a good policeman nonetheless. It was his talents and intelligence that swiftly propelled him to police chief.

'Hmm….something is up. I wonder what happened. Darnit. Must have something to do with Haru,' Sota thought.

"So nothing interesting happened?" he questioned.

"Nope, nothing," Saya denied.

"Uncle Sota, who's working on those three a.s.sault cases? Does the police have any leads?" Saya asked him, trying to avoid his inquiry.

"Whaa..how do you know about that. The attacks haven't been made public yet. Did you hack our system? No, no, no, no, don't answer that. I don't wanna know. I need probable deniability," he said hastily.

Saya wanted to pry some more information from him but they were interrupted by the ringing of the telephone. Alexis stood up and walked to her desk to answer the phone.

"Chief Kudo speaking."

Alexis listened attentively at the person on the other line. Her cheerful demeanor slowly fading away as the conversation went on.

"Did the parents agree?....okay...hmm hmm...proceed with the surgery. I'll let my husband know. Thanks for the update."

"Honey, what's wrong?," Sota asked his wife worriedly.

"That was our hospital's neurologists. Chie Miller the third victim from the a.s.sault cases developed a brain bleed. She needs surgery but her chances are pretty low," Alexis said sadly.

"If she doesn't make it her case would turn from an a.s.sault into a murder. The last two victims recanted their statements. Uncle Sota does the police have any leads or theories?" Saya asked.

Sota sighed heavily rubbing his temples. "We have some theories but nothing solid and with the victims not cooperating we're not getting much," Sato said heavily.

"The detectives believe it's a racial crime, am I correct?" Saya said.

Sato didn't want to confirm Saya's question but he knew she wouldn't stop hara.s.sing him until she got what she wanted.

"You saw the police report. We combed through the backgrounds of the victims. They don't know each other. They went to different schools and have different jobs. They come from different socioeconomic backgrounds. Nothing in these women's lives suggests that they ever crossed paths. The only thing they have in common is that they are of mixed race. The first two victims mothers are foreigners and the last victim's father is a foreigner. It's the only common thread between them."

"Well, the police department's theory is wrong. It has nothing to do with race," Saya said in a straightforward manner.
