Raaaawr!!!!

Roaaaaaar!!!!

Screeeeeech!!!!

The carapaced beasts made their warcry as they charged onwards. Zerglings ran ahead with great ferocity and speed, as if each zergling was possessed by the thrill of war. Following behind is the two thousand and five hundred strong swarm of mutalisks and devourers, screeching loudly as they flew as one towards the protoss lines. Roaches move beneath the earth, their three thousand strong numbers causing a 'wave' of earth to follow behind the zerglings.

Behind the great wave of burrowing roaches are the serpentine hydralisks. Their fang filled mouth twisting to form an expression of s.a.d.i.s.tic glee as each hydralisk is excited by the promise of killing protoss. Overlords drifted above the tide, their ma.s.sive brains processing and filtering ma.s.sive amounts of data required to direct their combat brethren. Every Overlord is occupied with sending commands, coordinates and exerting control to the tide and the swarm above them.

Ultralisks stampeded forward like mad bulls, baring their kaiser blades at the protoss in a show of intimidation. Thanks to the commands issued by the overlords, not one zerg unit was crushed beneath the ultralisk stampede. As the horde of zerglings rapidly approach the plateau, contact will be made soon.

On the protoss side….

Praetor Nereis eyed the incoming zerg army through a probe. She trusted Preserver s.h.i.+r'a and High Templar Marik with the two carriers and their air forces. During the hours after the second wave and before this one, the praetor had prepared a set of plans to quickly eliminate their numbers while minimizing their losses. Although the last wave has been nothing but an overwhelming victory, Nereis knew better than to underestimate the swarm's forces.

Especially after seeing the size of this wave and a new zerg breed entering the battlefield. From afar, they look like the more larger, slower and insectoid versions of the mutalisks. Despite their more harmless appearance compared to mutalisks, Nereis knew that their presence might be more dangerous than the ma.s.sive mutalisk swarm before them. As the zerg approach, the praetor telepathically messaged all the protoss to prepare for her command.

700 yards….

600 yards….

500 yards….

400 yards….

"Templar, activate the burrowed scarabs." Just a moment after, fiery explosions ravaged the frontlines of the zerg forces. Two thousand of zerglings, hundreds of roaches and several unlucky hydralisks were blown up sky high. Torrents of fire burned the zerg ranks, leaving circular charred land in their wake.

Not even fazed, the zerg charged forward just as the praetor expected. Immediately after several yards were crossed, Nereis psionically shouted another command, "Reavers! Release all the scarabs." From the maggot shaped reavers, hundreds of golden crab like robots scuttled forth. Like brave soldier ants, they marched into the battlefield, ready to confront the biological nightmares known as Zerg.

While the scarabs march onwards, Nereis issued another command, "Reavers, produce more scarabs! Immortals and Dragoons, form a defensive line along with the photon cannons and prepare to fire at will!" On her command, the quadruped protoss ranged units formed a line between the front photon cannons. Their weapons pointed downwards as they prepare to fire their photon blasts after the scarabs have made their mark.

Scarabs walked down the steep cliff and began spreading out, forming a network of moving explosives. Upon colliding with the zerg tide, explosions began. A hundred bursts of fire erupted in the zerg frontline, burning all nearby zerg to a crisp. Charred bodies were flung into the air, before falling everywhere and decorated the land with corpses.

After the scarabs purged their front lines, the protoss ranged armaments began their opening fire as zerglings clawed their way up the cliffs. As for the zerg that entered the narrow valley, previously placed scarabs detonated and shredded the funneled army. After the seeing the zerglings' failure to breach enemy lines, the overlords relayed commands for roaches to burrow and move up the cliffs. The earth 'wave' began to disperse and entered the cliffs, masking their appearance from the ranged protoss forces.

As the roaches fast burrow upwards, some of the dragoons and immortals felt vibrations from beneath them. Immediately, they blinked backwards and shouted, "Watch out, they're beneath us!" A little too late, roaches burst out from the ground raining down acid to the unprepared dragoons and immortals. Lucky for the protoss ranged units, their s.h.i.+elds depleted themselves to protect them from the acid barrage.

After balancing themselves, the protoss ranged units opened fire, bathing the armored roaches in photon blasts. Some roaches failed to burrow in time, transformed into charred corpses or brutalized remains. To deal with this, the high templar in charge of the plateau defense commanded the observers to float on the front lines. Small, floating, flower shaped golden robots flew ahead, halting upon reaching the front lines.

From there, every protoss unit is informed of the location and movements of the roaches beneath them. Thanks to this, 90% of roach ambushes are foiled and the protoss manage to slowly kite their numbers. From afar, Azir noticed the roaches burrowing abilities not being so effective and the zerglings inability to climb the plateau. After a.n.a.lyzing relayed information from his overlords, the cerebrate commanded a change of tactics.

After relaying information to the zerg forces, the roaches began retreating while the zerglings kept a distance from the cliff. No more zerg poured into the trench, and the frontlines of the charge stayed put. Seeing the zerg halting their advance with some of them retreating back to their ranks, several templar couldn't help but gloat.

"Behold, the power of the templar!"

"Yes, run away you primitive animals!"

"Ha! Such a cowardly foe!"

While some of the more 'conservative' ones gloat, every other templar still kept up their guard. Tactical retreats are a sign of intelligent animals, especially if they retreat only several minutes into the battle and with most of their numbers intact. Nereis a.s.sessed the situation, it seems that the zerg are changing tactics. Then, the mutalisk cloud began to descend towards the protoss forces.

Azir wants to draw out the carriers before surprising them with his explosive children. As the mutalisks approach the defensive line, the protoss forces opened fire. Photon cannons, dragoons and immortals fired an endless barrage of photon blasts. Four blasts were all it took to bring down a mutalisk, and with around two hundred of ranged forces present, fifty to seventy mutalisks fell every second.

Seeing his mutalisk cloud being quickly diminished, Azir sent the hundred ultralisks to slam towards the cliffs. The ground shook as a hundred, ma.s.sive 48 feet tall ultralisks charged towards the cliff. By the time that 300 air zerg units have already fallen, the behemoth sized ultralisks have arrived before the towering cliffs. Soon, these beasts slammed their carapace thick heads on the cliff, causing tremors to erupt everywhere.

The tremors caused some cannons and protoss to stutter, resulting in cancelling their fire or missing their shots. At this rate, the mutalisks managed to reach the defensive with over half their numbers still left. Glaive worms were fired, their reflecting shots destroying the photon cannons and damaging many dragoons and immortals. "Retreat while keeping fire!"

The dragoons and immortals kept firing as they slowly marched backwards. While the mutalisks kept them occupied, roaches burrowed back into the ground and behind their lines, preparing to ambush them. However, Nereis had already prepared to effectively handle the cloud of mutalisks and devourers. From afar, a carrier's purifier beam is ready as its front s.h.i.+nes brightly.

High Templar Ky'tra.s.s awaits his praetor's orders to fire at the mutalisk cloud while also striking the zerg beyond the plateau. The carrier had been tilted by 30° to maximize the damage dealt by also causing a scorching beam to strike the zerg tide. After all, Nereis had a bad feeling about this attack anyways, so why take any chances. As the roaches burrow closer to the retreating line of immortals and dragoons, Nereis patiently waits for the perfect angle to release the purifier beam.

Each reaver stored 4 scarabs ready to be launched into the air once the mutalisks have been distracted. Currently, scarabs poured forth from the reavers, detonating upon making contact with the tide. When the dragoons and immortals were pushed back, all zerg forces began charging ahead, using the diminished firepower of the protoss as an advantage. Once the mutalisk cloud has reached the planned point, Nereis called out her command.

"Fire!"

Immense amounts of energy gathers as the blue pillar of destruction was fired. As it travels closer to the cloud of flying, screeching zerg, the beam began to enlarge, its blueish glow slowly degrading into a reddish hue. Upon burning through the cloud, it ma.s.sively expanded, turning into a sun of destruction that burns all things into ash. Thousands of zerg were reduced to ashes alongside around three fourths of the protoss and their structures.

Nereis did not predict this outcome. The beam should only disperse forward and destroy much of the zerg army with little to no casualties during the attack. Protoss s.h.i.+elds lasted only a second as the white ball of condensed destruction engulfed the brave warriors who have resigned their fate. Hundreds of protoss faced their destruction as the light vaporized their armor and then their bodies.

Then, the praetor saw her death before her, in the form of an all consuming light.

'Is this how I end?'

'Purified by the flames?'

Before the flames could tear much of her flesh, the flames stopped. Four figures dropped in front of her, three of them holding back the flames using a generated blue s.h.i.+eld. She felt the pain lessen but the lingering flames brought searing pain all over her body. Her vision began to blur, but the praetor could see a familiar figure kneeling down and calling for a recall.

"Brother?"

Pillars of white and blue lights began to form as she felt the cold feeling of being warped into a vessel. Then, darkness dominated her vision and the pain disappears.

A male protoss in golden armor with red accents stood before where Nereis once was. His white cloak s.h.i.+elded him from the boiling air around him. After ensuring his sister and her remaining forces being warped back to his mothers.h.i.+p, the executor faced towards the three high templar generating the barrier. "High Templar, prepare to be recalled." Almost immediately, their bodies transformed into streaks of light that reformed within the mothers.h.i.+p in orbit.

Without the high templar to maintain the s.h.i.+eld, it collapsed in a few seconds and the torrent of flames was free to ravage the land that they previously stood on. If one were to remember the zerg hive cl.u.s.ters that stood upon the plateau alongside the coc.o.o.ns surrounding them, one would notice that the flames did not affect them.

On orbit…

A beautiful young woman floated in orbit. Her long brown hair swayed as if there was wind in the vacuum of s.p.a.ce as her vibrant pink eyes watched the protoss fleet and the destruction below with interest. After doing major changes to the deity system of her world, the creator warped into the starcraft universe. She had only arrived five minutes ago, during the middle stages of the battle.

The creator placed an indestructible s.h.i.+eld in all of her zerg forces, allowing them to survive any attack no matter its magnitude or realm. Also, the s.h.i.+eld would accelerate the evolution of all the zerg depending on how much energy is attacking the barriers. In this case, the evolving zerg would appear in only ten minutes as so much energy was injected into them that the system's rewards after evolution was extended. After the light stopped expanding and dispersed, the creator whispered the cerebrate's location to Executor Aragor's mind.

On the mothers.h.i.+p….

On the small city sized s.h.i.+p's bridge, a hundred protoss from the khalai or templar caste were stationed. There were seven golden doors from which the room could be accessed, guarded by a pair of zealots on each side. An array of protoss computers displayed information from various parts of the s.h.i.+ps, from weapons to the many active systems. Scientists monitored these systems while they awaited commands from their executor who was previously warped to the surface of the planet alongside three high templar.

On the bridge's platform, blue particles of light began to build a protoss figure molecule by molecule as he is warped into the mothers.h.i.+p. In a second, the imposing figure of executor Aragor was reconst.i.tuted. Not wasting any time, he issued a command for invasion. "My brethren, this planet has been infested by the zerg swarm."

"Hundreds of our brethren on this world have perished while they were performing their duties of expanding our glorious empire. In return for slaying our innocent brethren, we shall purify the zerg in flames. Prepare the mothers.h.i.+p's purifier beam!" Arrays were flooded with information as the weapon gathers immense amounts of energy.

Subtle whispers direct the protoss on the bridge to fill in coordinates of the cerebrate's hive and to lower the energy output to only purify everything within a two thousand kilometer radius. Below the mothers.h.i.+p's core, a ma.s.sive ball of energy forms and expands as streaks of light are absorbed by the ever growing sphere of destruction. Small wisps of green energy danced on the sphere's surface, providing void energy to destroy the cerebrate and sever all links to the hivemind.

After five more seconds, energy stopped being gathered. Suddenly, the sphere transformed into a ma.s.sive white beam. As the beam enters the atmosphere, the clouds were parted as shockwaves expanded from the beam. Upon striking the ma.s.sive hive, a thundering boom resounded as an explosion occured.

The explosion was so loud that it was heard from orbit and the shockwaves cause the immediate area to be devoid of its atmosphere. As the explosion expands, hundred thousands of zerg were consumed by the fiery wall, turning them all into ash. The void energies separated the zerg from the hivemind, hiding this event from the Overmind. Thus, no one would ever have known of Cerebrate Azir or his brood as the protoss empire have secretly eradicated him with the aid of an unknown being.

The flames consumed all unfortunate enough to be caught in the expanding sphere, its energies quickly combusting all compounds into much simpler and gaseous compounds. The s.h.i.+elds absorbed so much energy from the blast, accelerating the swarm's evolution. However, the environment was too hostile. Instead, these energies upgraded the rewards of evolution while also reducing the requirements to reach the tier 4 evolution.

After expanding for five seconds, the blast dissipates. Only a charred continent remains, with a deep and circular crater as its center. Water from the ocean slowly seeps into the cracks, forming future rivers and lakes of this continent. The mothers.h.i.+p made planet wide scans of zerg life.

Finding none, the fleet left and with a protoss executor who will have a long word with the Conclave for sending his sister to colonize a zerg infested world. s.p.a.ce distorts around the fleet as they enter warp speed, travelling back to Aiur at far greater speed than light.

On the charred continent, 1000km from the crater's center….

Coc.o.o.ns began to burst, showering the area around it in amniotic fluids and small pieces of elastic flesh and carapace. Upon touching the charred ground, the fluids sizzles as heat is absorbed by the biological liquids. A ten foot tall coc.o.o.n bursts, its explosion partially triggered by psionic energy. From it, the centaur like form of a queen emerged.

Unlike other queens, her upper body features were more human like and her skull was thicker but also slightly longer. Spine throwing wings are nowhere to be found but dozens of nerve cord strands emerged from her crown like skull, giving the illusion of long hair. Her eyes were crackling in power as blue sparks danced across her hand and eyes. The queen observed some of her features, intrigues by her more humanoid shape.

With her overflowing psionic power, the queen announced her evolution.

"I have awakened."
