Liz's eyes fluttered open and she realized that Max is cradling her in his arms.

He is leaning sideways on the backrest of the sofa and his eyes are closed.

Liz felt guilt wash over her at the thought that she was not fair for rejecting his two offers to go out because she was thinking about herself and how it might be inconvenient for her. And Max was nothing other than lovely and he didn't complain. And he ma.s.saged her neck and now he is holding her in a position which can't be comfortable for him, but he is still doing it so that she can rest… because he puts her first.

She wondered if he is sleeping, but as soon as she moved a bit, his lids opened.

"Awake?", he asked with a smile and in the next instant his brows furrowed when he noticed her troubled expression. "What happened?"

"Why are you so good to me?"

"You are my girlfriend.", Max responded matter-of-factly.

Liz blinked. No matter how she looks at it, just having a label of a girlfriend is not enough. "I am emotionally lacking, and I don't know how to be a girlfriend. Why are you set on torturing yourself?"

Max wondered, why is Liz so hard on herself? Woman with her intelligence, achievements and looks should be confident. But then he remembered that she asked him for guidelines how to have fun and she even wanted to take notes.

He reminded himself to be patient and to do his best to answer her questions without spooking her out. "There is no such thing as a manual for a girlfriend. I would explain a relations.h.i.+p as doing things with the person who makes you happy, and I hope that for you, that person is me. Your whole life you prioritized certain things, but that does not mean that you are lacking in other areas… It's like riding a bicycle: it's easy, everyone can do it, but if you never sat on one you will not know how to balance. Every moment with you I am filled with excitement like an explorer on an uncharted island, not sure what is coming next, but I know that it will be wonderful… like you."

Max smiled. "Did I answer your questions?"

Liz looked at him and his words were sweet and caring, just like he is, but it made her even more guilty. She thought how she needs to do something for him in return. Something that will make him welcome in this relations.h.i.+p they started because he is the person who makes her happy.

Liz got out of his hug and held his hand. "Let's go."

He stood up. "Where?"

"To sleep. It's late."

Max was doing his best to hide the surprise on his face when he realized that Liz is leading him to her bedroom. He gets to sleep there just like that? With no need to scheme and use the fact that Hunter and Mia are across the hallway?

A smile bloomed on his face at the realization that he is making a better progress than he thought.

They got in Liz's bedroom and she realized: "You probably don't have sleepwear. Will you go and get it from your place?"

"Sure." Max was so overwhelmed by the fact that Liz was OK with him staying the night that he forgot to think about the details like sleepwear. Well, he has no problems sleeping in his underwear (or without it), but he is pretty sure that will be something to push Liz away. Max turned to leave swiftly, so that he can return before she changes her mind.

"Wait.", Liz stopped him and took a notepad and a pen from the drawer in the side table.

Max felt anxiety build up. Did she change her mind already? He watched her as she spoke while writing: "I will go and shower first. You can let yourself in. This is the guest pa.s.scode for my apartment."

Max glanced at the eight-digit number on the paper for a second before gesturing to Liz to give him the pen.

"This is for mine.", he returned her the paper with his guest pa.s.scode under the one she wrote down.

"Don't you need it?", Liz pointed to the paper.

"I got it.", Max pointed to his temple, indicating that he memorized it.

Liz was impressed. It seems that Max has a photographic memory, or at least close to it. She didn't know that. No wonder Rina praised his academic achievements and said that many called him a genius. Memorizing things quickly is like a super-power while attending school.

Max cleared his throat. "While we are at it, how about you give me your phone number?"

Liz laughed at the realization that after so much time they didn't exchange phone numbers.

Liz got out of the bathroom and saw that Max is lying on top of the bed and fiddling with his phone while humming a song.

He noticed her a second later, grabbed his things rolled into a bundle and headed to the bathroom.

"Don't sleep off without me.", he said after he kissed Liz's cheek when he pa.s.sed by her.

Liz looked at the closed door and thought how Max does not need much to be happy. And it seems that she is the person who can make him happy. This was new for Liz. She never thought of herself as someone who can make others happy (outside fixing health problems).

Liz was sorry that tomorrow is Monday. It means that she will go to work and see Max only in the evening. She wants to spend more time with him because she realized that making him happy makes her feel the same way as well. Maybe that is what a relations.h.i.+p is all about: making the other one happy.

Liz got her phone to set the alarm and noticed a message from Max:

"Cell phone usage guidelines for my wonderful girlfriend:

#1: Save my number as 'My handsome boyfriend'.

#2: You must answer my calls, or I will worry that something happened to you.

#3: If you can't answer my call, get back to me as soon as you can (because I will be worrying that something happened to you).

#4: You must smile when your screen lights up with 'My handsome boyfriend' as the caller ID.

#5: Text your handsome boyfriend (that would be me) whenever you think about me (and it's not inconvenient)."

Liz giggled while reading the text. Really… isn't this childish? What kind of instructions are these? But she told him that she does not know how to act like a girlfriend, so maybe she needs these kinds of step-by-step instructions… no matter how silly they are.

She kept her phone on the side and went to her closet to prepare clothes for tomorrow.

Liz paused when she noticed that Max added a navy blue suit on the hanger next to her dresses. It's obviously for tomorrow. She never saw him wearing a business suit, but she knows that he will be das.h.i.+ng. And this color will go great with his eyes.

Liz smiled at the thought that Max is serious about going back to work with a goal to prove that he can lead a company. He told her that he is neglecting his work (maybe not in those words, but she picked it up) and Liz knows that going back for Max is not simple because other than regular tasks he will also need to focus on regaining his father's trust.

Liz met Max's father and her impression of him is that he is a difficult man. If the rift between Max and his father is not serious, Max would not go to lengths of faking a girlfriend.

She told herself that as a good girlfriend she should cheer him on. He will need it.

Max got out of the bathroom and he was happy to see that Liz is awake, busy with her phone.

Without delay he got under the cover and snuggled next to Liz.

He was about to ask what she is up to, when his phone beeped. He got a message from 'My wonderful girlfriend':

"Do your best at work. I am proud of you."

Max chuckled. "Thanks. But I am right here, you can just tell me."

Liz pouted. "That was not in the guidelines you sent me earlier. Besides, if tomorrow you have a hard time, you can read it again."Find authorized novels in Webnovel, faster updates, better experience,Please click for visiting.

Max looked at Liz and thought how her EQ is higher than he thought. "That is true. Thank you."

They discussed their morning schedule and Max adjusted his alarm accordingly. His work hours are after hers, and he does not want to wake up late and miss the chance to see Liz in the morning.

Max was about to pull her closer to him, when Liz leaned away and turned off the lights. He was surprised (again) to feel her scoot close to him and rest her head on his shoulder. A second later, she moved and kissed his cheek before going back to her previous position.

"Good night, Max."

He kissed the top of her head and tightened his hug.

"Good night, Liz."

Max smiled. Yup, he is making a much better progress than he thought. And he will make sure not to mess it up.
