"Focus, Adam," Abby shouted from across the room. This was day five in our training and Lothair and I were finally sparring. The first four days of 'training' as Abby had put it was more like a school cla.s.sroom. What weapons work best for what creature. What parts of folklore are right and what is just in the movies, History of each creature and how to kill them.

Finally, she was letting me learn how to fight. She still hadn't turned me and I understood. It wasn't like we were a couple, just good friends. I still felt a connection and a love that you feel for a close friend but not anything magickal.

"Come on, Adam, premeditate my moves. Watch not just my eyes but my entire body. Brace yourself for my attack so you can counter it," Lothair said calmly as he moved side to side. He swung his right fist at me but I didn't see it coming. He connected with my jaw, but luckily, he was fighting in his human form which is like fighting another human. But it did still hurt.

"Shake it off, Adam. Watch, antic.i.p.ate, block, counter!" Abby's words caught me and I focused.

Lothair stepped back on his right foot and swung again, this time I blocked his. .h.i.t and caught his hand. I hit him with his own fist then with my elbow, connected it to his ear. He stepped back shaking his head and pulling on his ear. "d.a.m.n, that was a good shot to the ear," Lothair laughed. "Always remember, lycanthropes and windigo have sensitive ears."

"But vampire are different," Abby said then looked over at Leon. This was the first time that she had even regarded him since her birthday. "Leon, stand in for Adam. He needs to see what fighting a vampire is like, not so much a lycan."

"A vampire fighting a Kethra, right? Not a lycanthrope." Lothair announced with his hands up.

"Right," Abby said curtly. "Come on, Leon," she stood and walked over to Lothair's place as Leon took mine.

I stood to the side watching the scene unfold before me. Leon stood slack and his face was stoic. He looked at Abby but she was looking down. She was nervous or something because her usual confidence was lacking. They stood there not moving for a few minutes before Lothair remarked, "That's how you fight a vampire? You don't fight?"

Leon looked first at Lothair then at Casimir. They all looked confused. I guess they thought that she wouldn't have a problem with kicking Leon's a.s.s. After all, she used to hate him.

Casimir nodded at Leon and he turned back to Abby and swung his fist, hitting her with a right hook.

She gave to the momentum of the hit, but she didn't make any attempts of fighting back.

"Abby!" I called to her. Being the only one in the room to know what was really wrong. She didn't react, she just kept looking down. I started to walk toward her but then she looked at me. At that moment, I knew. She couldn't do it. She couldn't hit him, not with all of the guilt she felt. "Tell him," I urged.

"Tell who, what?" Casimir asked. "Dru, Abby, what are you hiding? Tell Him?" She looked around again and turned away. "Who?" Casimir demanded.

"Leon," she said in a small voice as she turned and faced away from us.

"What?" Leon asked. "Is there something I don't know about?"

"Yeah, there is," I stated to him.

"Adam, stop!" Abby spun around and begged. Her eyes were teary and pleading. "Just… No."

She turned to walk out of the room but I couldn't let this go on. It had been put off long enough. It had gone too far. It was eating her up and it needed to be out.

"No, Abby, tell him or I will, if that will save you the pain of saying it. But either way, we need to clear the air before we leave this room." She stopped and looked back over her shoulder, looking at me out of the corner of her eye. I could see the pain, even from this angle, so I spoke softer. "Abby, it's eating you up. It's been eating at you for now six hundred years." I finished slowly saying the last three worlds. Emphasizing how long this has been going on. "You aren't Dru anymore, remember, you're Abby. You care. And as you told me your heart breaks every time you look at him, and I know, I see it. In your eyes. In your face. In your body language. Abby, please, tell him."

"Tell me, what?" Leon asked.

Abby turned and looked at me. Our eyes met and I could see something different in them. She kept staring at me, and then I saw it. I saw something. I don't know how to describe it but it was like a flicker of white in her dark hair. It flickered a few times before Leon interrupted, "Someone talk to me! What is it that you're not telling me?"

She blinked and tears streamed down her face. She took a deep breath and steadied her breathing. She met her eyes with his and opened her mouth, but stopped.

"Drusilla, please. What is it?" Leon pleaded.

She closed her eyes again, took a deep breath and looked back into his eyes. "Darin," she whispered.

I watched as everyone's faces were washed with confusion. Especially, Leon. "Who is Darin?" Leon asked finally.

"When I was bitten, I was waiting for you in my father's rose garden. Remember?" she began. He nodded as he furrowed his brow. "I had something important to share with you but before I could, Ca.s.sondra showed up and, well, you know." She turned away, breaking eye contact with Leon as she continued. "Do you remember the young couple in the west woods five years later? The young couple and their boy?"

"Yes," Leon answered solemnly.

"Do you remember that little boy that you…" her voice cracked and she brought her hand to her face. Leon looked down in shame. She turned back and started toward Leon. "Do you remember that little boy who you killed in front of me? Made me watch." Leon nodded but couldn't look at her. "That little boy who was only five. Who had your dark hair…and your chin…and your lips…my green eyes…and my nose." She stopped as Leon looked up at her.

"No," he whispered.

"Do you remember him?" Abby asked softly. She was right in front of him and she raised her hand to his cheek, cradling his face.

"No," Leon whispered again. I don't think he wanted to believe it.

"Yes, that little boy was not theirs. He was ours. Our prince." She said barely audible. She brought her hand down as she looked at the ground, then back up at him but his eyes were focused somewhere else. "I'm so sorry, I didn't tell you sooner. I just… I just couldn't bring myself to say it out loud," she continued, trying not to break down again. Everyone looked shocked and confused that she was apologizing to Leon.

"I guess I was afraid that if I said it out loud, it would make it more real, or make it undeniable. I don't know but I have hated you for far too long over it because I couldn't talk about it, because I couldn't move on."

"I would have hated me, too." Leon said quietly. "In fact, I do. I'll never forgive…"

"I forgive you, Leon. Leonidas, I forgive you." Abby said sweetly.

At that, he looked her square in the eye, shock registering across his face. She smiled at him but his face went completely emotionless. There was nothing written on his face. No pain, or shock, or anger or anything. Casimir and Lothair had stepped away and had their eyes on Abby and Leon.

"But…" Leon stuttered quietly. "But…" his eyes began jumping from thing to thing like he was searching for something, anything but Abby.

"Leon?" she asked.

Suddenly, his head snapped up and his eyes met mine. I could see the tears, the agony, and the pain of hundreds of years in them and a second later he was gone, out the door.

"Leon," Casimir, Lothair and Abby all called but a second too late. Leon was gone.
