There have been many forms of communication in this world. From the basic speech that most people use to weirder, less used, such as morse code.
Everyone has a favourite way to communicate, some people like to text and some people might use a carrier pigeon.
But in the cla.s.sroom, one method that is favoured among students is pa.s.sing a note.
The challenge with pa.s.sing a note in this cla.s.s is that the three of use are situated at other ends of the room. To send a note we would have to pa.s.s it down to a few people, working out the shortest route the note would have to travel to get to its destination.
Ethan was the one that started the new note 'trend' that we are on. Even though we could text this is more interesting.
I looked at Ethan and Sean who both sat far away from me. The two of them leant over a piece of paper hiding what they were writing. Little laughs were let out and the sound of scribbles filled the room. I awkwardly looked over hoping it wasn't anything that would get us caught and saw them both looking directly at me as if they were waiting for me to notice.
The two of them folded the paper carefully no more than 3 times. They tried to get it as small as possible but they started arguing about how it wasn't folded evenly.
The note began to make its journey down to me. It followed pa.s.sed many people who casually pa.s.sed it on without blinking an eye. The hard part was keeping it from the teacher. And in this cla.s.sroom, there is a gap in the desks.
Allow me to explain, the science cla.s.srooms have four long desks that you sit behind. Two at the front and two behind. I was located next to the door on the front left side. Whilst Ethan and Sean were sat at the furthest point from the door, the back right side. Separating these two sides, was a gap that, to a piece of paper, looked like the size of an ocean. A normal student couldn't stretch their arm across the gap on their own. It would require the effort of both sides to form a bridge to connect the message. This would be no problem, however, should we get caught, that's game over.

The note stopped at the bridge of doom. The student who held it looked across with fear in their eyes. There were unspoken rules in the cla.s.sroom, one of them involves helping a note on its journey.
Determination filled the student's eyes. I could see just how bright they s.h.i.+ned with power. their fear was beaten away and they were ready for this. they were born ready.
they stuck out their hand hoping the person on the other end would notice. they had already watched and calculated where the teacher would be as soon as they saw the note being pa.s.sed. All the students did.
The student at the other end of the bridge stuck out their arm to receive the note. This was it. The note was about to make its way. It was nearly here.
The holy note that travelled for countless days and nights was about to arrive in my hands. My eyes were wide open, ready to read every word. Leave no word left unread.
Here it is. Here it comes. One person until it gets to me.
It's here. The note is here. Like a kid on Christmas, or someone who ordered same-day delivery and was eagerly waiting for it to arrive at any moment. Hoping that by same-day delivery it also meant same hour delivery.
"h.e.l.lo, I am a prince and have-" Ah f.u.c.k it's just spam.
I threw the note into the bin and looked over to Sean and Ethan who had a murderous intent in their eyes. They weren't happy with me throwing the note away.
Several notes went pa.s.sed. To make it easier for you all. I shall save the description of the journey and get straight to the notes.
"Why did you send me that note?" I replied.
"Didn't you find it funny? From Sean and Ethan."
"You don't have to sign off your notes. I know who it is."
"Sorry. Love from, Sean and Ethan."
"You are still doing it?"
"Mgtbaeds." Ok, this one seems to be unreadable. Whose handwriting is this?
I guess I'll reply with something simple and try to start up another conversation.
"What are the answers to question 2?" I wrote.
"56, 59 and C"
I looked at the answers I was given along with the questions on the sheet. Clearly, there is some mistake. I don't think the answer to 'What is the definition of a compound element' is 56.
No. Wait. I see it now! It was in front of me all along. 56 isn't the answer, 56 is the atomic number for Barium, which is a compound… I see… How does this help me with the definition?
"How does this help?" I replied.
"56 - atomic number and C is the answer to the third part."
I can see the atomic number and the C part is correct. But what does 59 mean?
"What about 59?"
"Door number." They replied.
Door number? I thought to myself what this could mean. What does he mean by door number? And what does this have to do with 59?
I spent a while thinking until it hit me. Ethan was an idiot. He was referring to his door number, which is 59.
At this point, our note-pa.s.sing had gotten the attention of some unwanted visitors. Someone with infested hair was sitting in the row in front of Ethan and Sean and noticed us pa.s.sing notes. Ruby sat up trying to intercept the notes but her seat position gave her no advantage.
She sat up higher and higher, trying to figure out a way to steal a secret note.
I caught on to her plan quickly and send a note back to Ethan and Sean, warning them.
"Be careful. Angry turnip. In front, knows."
The note began to make its way back. I watched to make sure Ruby didn't grab it. It took a few extra seconds before crossing the bridge as the teacher was being more active than ever. By the time it came back to my side I lost the note. I watched it carefully but as soon as it crossed it vanished.
'Where did it go?' I thought to myself as I started to look at the floor in case I dropped it.
"Hey, Owen. This is an interesting note." A voice from behind leant forward.
"Kaylee? Did you always sit there?" I said with sweat pouring down my face.
"Of course. I try and talk to you sometimes but you always ignore me."
This was it. It was game over. Ruby wasn't making herself known to watch the note, it was to alert Kaylee who was watching us this whole time. A spy on the left side that I failed to notice.
"Let's see what it says, shall we?"
It's all over. We've lost. depending on what Ethan has written could kill us all. We have to leave everything in his hands. My life is in Ethan's hands. I'm doomed.
"I wonder what your kids would look like. I wonder what my kids would look like. What would our kids look like?" The note read.
Kaylee looked at the note and back to me. Down to the note and back to me.
"Well, I hope you two are happy together."
"That's not what this means," I said trying to defend myself. "I can't speak for Ethan but I don't feel that way towards him. I don't feel that way towards guys."
"It's ok, Owen. Whatever makes you happy!"
Why do I feel like she doesn't believe me?
Sitting across the room, oblivious to what was happening was Ethan. Sitting with a smirk plastered across his face listening to the teacher's lesson.
There is no way… right?
He didn't plan for this to happen?
Did he set me up?
Did I just lose? To Ethan?
