I am back in my room when I get an unexpected visit from Helena.

"Is there anything I can help you with?"

I still can't feel anything from her.

In a way it's a good thing but it's also incredibly frustrating.

Unlike the soothing presence of a Void it's an uncomfortable absence.

Every second that she doesn't respond makes me want to tear that necklace off her just for some sort of reaction.

"... I'm going on a trip. I'll be leaving tonight. With any luck I'll be back in a day or so."

I'm sure my shock is plain.

"Larcen agreed to let you leave?"

She shrugs.

"He didn't have much of a choice. We can't win with what we have."

I narrow my eyes at her.

"So your trip will help us win?"

"Perhaps. It might not, but if I don't go we'll never know."

"Why are you telling me this? You could have just left."

"Kent."

"What about Kent?"

"If he finds where I'm going he will do everything in his power to stop me. Especially after the circ.u.mstances surrounding their mad dash here. His s.h.i.+ning knight complex is too strong."

Somewhere Kent won't approve of?

"Exactly what part of any of this so far has been 'wise'?"

She has a point there.

"Is it necessary then? Are you sure he won't turn you over?"

She snorts.

"I know what I'm doing. Now will you help or not?"

"What exactly do you want my help with? Keeping it from Kent? I'm not comfortable with that."

"No, not keeping it from him. He'll probably figure it out anyway even if he doesn't hear it from someone else. I want you to order him not to intervene."

I worry my lip as I think about it.

The last thing either of us wants is Kent deciding to play hero and getting himself caught by the guards or worse.

Still with the way things are now an order like this might just antagonise him further.

He may not even listen to it.

After all even Kent has his limits and this could be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

She makes an impatient noise.

"Look are you going to help me or not?"

"I don't know..."

Giving him an order like that when I'm not even sure he will intervene may just damage our relations.h.i.+p for no reason.

"I thought we both agreed that keeping Kent safe was a top priority, but if you're willing to let him follow me and get caught then I was obviously mistaken."

I can't help but get angry at that.

"Of course I want to keep him safe! I just don't want him to hate me."

The last part was barely a whisper but she heard it.

"That's where you and I differ. I'd rather him hate me than have him die."

I don't know what to say to that.

"Well?"

She's right.

His safety is more important than my feelings.

We can always patch things up later as long as he survives.

Besides his death would hurt me far worse than his coldness.
