Radley made his way to Rita. Rita's face lit up like a Christmas tree on Christmas Eve when she saw Radley.
"So, you got yourself another Fanta?"
"Nah, kind of lost my sense of taste for it. Now I just want a stiff drink."
She shook her head, "Alcohol is only going to inhibit your senses."
"That's fine, I need to be a bit dull."
She beckoned him over. He nonchalantly agreed. He sat down on the side of his bed. She beckoned him even closer, "I want to tell you a little secret."
He leaned in even closer. She placed her arms around him and kissed him on the cheek. He whispered into his ear, "Thank you for standing up for me like that."
This freaked Radley out, "No, no, no, no! What are you doing!?"
Now Rita started to freak out, "Wha…I…Tha…A thank you?"
"I mean, I appreciate the sentiment and all, but…You are basically forcing a connection with me. I don't want to be friends or anything…just…I am sorry,"
With that, he walked out without turning around.
Rita looked at him in a rather shocking way. She wants to slap herself upside the head, "Stupid, stupid….aahg. Maybe that was a bit much. I guess he called himself 'The Loner' for a reason, but that reaction was still a bit weird."
He closed the door behind him. A guy with a bit of a nasty smile approached the medical wing. Radley didn't like it. Lv.5, Aran, Controlling Nature. His nature seemed more of a problem, but Radley ignored it. He needed a drink.
He walked around with the intent of finding booze, even if it meant wasting all his money. Erina happened to spot him, "Hey congrats on the compet.i.tion so far."
She happened to have a corn dog in her hand, "Erina…why are you here?"
"To congratulate you of course. Here have this."
"What are you doing?"
She gave him the corndog and placed her arm around him, "We are going to get drunk."
"I'm not playing this game. Leave me alone."
Erina sighed, "Look, I feel bad about the way I treated you, okay?"
"I don't care about how you treated me. I've experienced worse. I just don't want to wake up the next morning tied to a tree."
"Wow, you think that little of me?"
"I think that little of all humans, besides I, can get myself drunk. Don't need someone to hold my hand."
"Jesus, well aren't you a broken pup. It was just a friendly invitation."
"Sentiment appreciated, now can I leave?"
She raised her hand in the air, "n.o.body is stopping you."
He turned and walked away. Erina shook her head and walked away from herself.
Radley wandered the streets until he found something akin to a shop. He entered they were selling all sorts of good. That included heavy alcohol. He smiled as he approached the whiskey only to see its price tag, "Fifty dollars!? Why is everything so G.o.d d.a.m.n expensive in this country."
A ragged voice went off behind him, "The locally produced stuff is cheaper, but have you ever tried importing to this county. It's a f.u.c.king nightmare, hence the large price tags."
Radley picked up the bottle. It was the cheaper stuff that he was familiar with. It cost fifteen dollars where he is from. It's almost three times as expensive now. He shrugged, he needed to get drunk.
The diff system chimed up, "Any foreign contaminants that are ingested orally are subject to immediate processing. This system stands for, Death is for fools. Drinking alcohol inhibits cognitive functions for better reactions in stressful situations. In other words. Getting inebriated is for fools."
That put a right damper on his desire. Now he can't even get drunk. This system is crueler than he ever thought possible. He needed his escape!
He goes to the beer rack. Forty-five dollars for a six-pack. This is daylight robbery. He at least enjoyed the taste of beer. He looked at his money. Two hundred and eighty dollars left. His room cost seventy-five dollars. Hopefully, he wins tomorrow's matches. He really needed the money. Even here, capitalism was the only real way out.
He took one out, popped the cap, and took a deep swig. The taste was so relaxing for him. He went back to the hostel. There was a bunch of girls sitting in the living room chatting away. Ruby was among them.
She spotted him, "Hey, why don't you join us? You did really well in the compet.i.tion. Come tell us all about it."
"Nah, I will take a rain check. I am really tired."
"Not from the look of those beers in your hand."
"They are my comforting allies. We just need to have a small meeting."
"Oh, yeah. I was told to tell you that meals will be served at six. Don't be late."
"Oh, okay thanks."
Ruby didn't want to pry too much. To her, he looked down in the dumps. She shrugged and kept talking to her friends.
He slept for the rest of the day. That night Ruby came to wake him up, knocking on his door, "Hey, food will be served soon. You should probably head down."
He wasn't exactly all that tired. He collected the empty beer bottles and threw them in the trash. Can't get drunk. This is going to be a miserable experience. He went down to grab some food. To his surprise, it was a hamburger with chips. Well, at least that comfort was still around.
The attending girl smiled, "You are doing well in the compet.i.tion so I decided to get you something special as good luck, but I will have to ask you to pay for tonight."
He nodded and paid. He took his burger and sat down. One bite and it felt like all his problems just melted away. When he finished eating he thanked the attendee girl.
He needed some fresh air and decided to go for a walk.
He went as far as the edge of the ma.s.sive rock. He heard a commotion and turned around to see what it was. He saw Rita in crutches being dragged along by a man. Something about it felt off. They disappeared around the corner. He lazily stood up and walked in that general direction. Curiosity got the better of him.
