Tonight was extraordinarily cold and gloomy and Tarou couldn't help but hug himself while eyeing the unmoving body beside him.

"Boss?"
The mouse squeaked with apprehension as the resounding sound of thunder echoed around the log.
"Boss..."
Tarou whispered, "are you still breathing?"
The little mouse could feel fear creep into his system as the rain poured out in torrents. The wind howled outside as if threatening the small creature. Although there were no enemies inside the log, Tarou felt too alone.
He could survive on his own but he can't abandon Boss. He hugged the cat's fur and closed his eyes earnestly. Steeling himself, Tarou distanced himself from the cat and placed a leaf close to the opening of the log. The mouse waited for several droplets to fill the leaf with a bit of water.
With careful steps, Tarou protected a few drops of water and headed towards the unconscious cat. The mouse pried the cat's mouth open.
"Boss, you need to at least drink water."
Unfazed, the little mouse delivered water to the cat until his little body couldn't do it anymore. Tired, Tarou collapsed close to the cat's paw and took the time to catch his breath.
Phew!
Tarou stared at the cat in front of him before squeaking cheekily.
"Boss, it's raining hard, your b.u.t.t's outside, aren't you cold?"
The mouse wagged a small paw in front of the cat's nose as if trying to feel for something. Looking back at the darkness, the mouse couldn't help but curse.
"I knew it! Those humans! Should I hold out and wait for help?"
As expected no one answered. All Tarou could hear was the howling wind which seems to be blowing with a vengeance. The mouse shook his head with indecision and found a dry spot to call it a night.
Just when his small head hit the soft cus.h.i.+on of leaves and soil an ear-m.u.f.fling sneeze echoed inside the log. The impact was also enough to make Tarou cling to the ground. Shocked and confused, the mouse b.u.mped into one corner of the log.
"Hey!!!" Tarou lost all the melancholy he felt earlier. It may have been a small b.u.mp but he almost had a heart attack. Getting up and brus.h.i.+ng off the dirt on his fur, he looked around the area with irritation. As he was about to complain loudly, he heard another sneeze.
Now alert, Tarou engaged all his senses while waiting for what would happen next. He took a step back when his gaze focused on the direction of the unconscious cat. A pair of golden eyes looked at him with such intensity that he fell back on his b.u.t.t. Landing with a thud, he couldn't help but rub his bottom.
"Ah...ehh...."
Tarou couldn't find the words as he pointed towards the cat who just opened its eyes and let out a yawn. He was utterly speechless while looking at Boss.
"B-b-boss!!!"
The excited squeak resounded inside the tight s.p.a.ce and Tarou immediately ran towards the cat, encircling it without fear.
"You're back!!! You were out for days!"
Tarou squeaked with exasperation but he was secretly relieved. The cat studied him for a few minutes without saying anything.
'Did he overdo it? Is Boss mad?'
The black cat extended his paws as if going for a stretch before pulling its body out of the log.
Tarou could hear another sneeze while looking at the cat's receding figure.
Who could blame the cat for waking up with a sour face? It was an uncomfortable position after all! Realizing this, Tarou felt a sliver of fear.
Not willing to stay far from the Boss, Tarou quickly left the log and tailed the cat. The mouse saw the black cat heading towards a thick tree cover and he quickened his pace to keep up.
"Boss! Wait!"
For some reason, the cat walked in an unusual manner.
"Boss!" Tarou poked the cat's paw after feeling that everything was too surreal. When Boss slapped his small paw away and hiss, Tarou felt so happy he didn't care about the cat's violent reaction.
"Where have you been?" Tarou asked, oblivious to the cat's brooding mood.
"My muscles!" Tarou heard the cat mutter under its breath.
'Boss don't blame me for leaving your b.u.t.t exposed. It's not like I can drag you to shelter.' The little mouse was staring at his feet while waiting for the cat to react.
"Believe me you don't wanna be there."
When Tarou peeked at the black cat, he noticed how Boss seems to be looking for the best position. He secretly sighed in relief while studying the cat who finally settled on the best position. He waited eagerly for Boss to continue.
"I met a bunch of boring peop—- ani-- forget it. Right now, the most important thing is to go back."
"Where do we go?" Tarou asked. He had the same question earlier but at least now, someone else will call the shots.
"Back to the capital. There's much to do when we return."
"We'll go baaaack???" Tarou confirmed. Boss has always been sucking up to humans and if they had enough food there, it wasn't a bad deal for him anyway. While thinking about going back, he remembered how that horse Nightmare left them to fend for themselves.
"Boss, you should teach that Nightmare a lesson when we're back. I'll deal with that guy Barca when we return. Unreliable human."
"What are you so grumpy about?" The cat had a serious look on its face while staring at him intently.
"Humans are selfish. How dare he ignore my plea for help! That human --- he'll see."
As Tarou issued the challenge he looked at the raindrops which continued to pour.
It was the same forest, still enveloped in darkness but this time, he felt better. With a sideways glanced he followed the cat's movements and smiled with satisfaction before letting out a threatening squeak.
"They'll see."
