Chapter 206: Money Was More Important
Yu Jing still hadn’t announced her expulsion from the sect. This made Cheng Wei confident that it wouldn’t come to that point at all, that her master wouldn’t go to such lengths.
Besides, it wasn’t as if she had committed some fatal mistake.
By all accounts, she remained as the number one in the neurology department, just as the invitation card had stated.
Given how significant the event was, there would certainly be a lot of famous personalities in attendance.
She would probably run into Yu Jing, too, but Cheng Wei wasn’t worried. She knew he was old-fas.h.i.+oned and prideful, much like most of the traditional geezers in the field.
!!At most, he might just give her a cold greeting.
Cheng Wei saw no need for concern.
She initially hadn’t planned to go to the conference; she had other business to attend to that day. But then she saw the venue on the invitation card.
City A!
Her lips curled into a devious smile. She stared at the words for several moments, her thoughts swirling inside her head.
And then she suddenly burst out laughing. The sound was unnaturally loud in the otherwise quiet room.
Cheng Wei’s eyes flashed with cunning.
She took out her phone and did some online searches. After finding the contact number she needed, she made the call.
An automated response greeted her: “Greetings, client. How may the Shadow League be of service to you?”
Cheng Wei stared at her newly-manicured nails.
“I want information on a person—negative information, if you know what I mean. I also want a list of all the dubious acquaintances she has made. This shouldn’t be difficult for you, right?”
“No problem,” the person from the Shadow League answered without a second’s hesitation. “We just need the name of the target, along with some necessary data.”
Cheng Wei ignored him and asked, “How soon can you get the information I want?”
The medical conference was going to be held next Wednesday; she didn’t have much time. She had a lot riding on the skills and efficiency of the Shadow League.
“Three days at most,” came the reply.
The man sounded straightforward and self-a.s.sured.
Cheng Wei nodded, satisfied. She glanced at the invitation card again and smirked.
Three days should be enough time.
‘Let’s see what you do this time around, Yao Tang. I’m going to destroy your reputation once and for all!’
There was a beat of silence as the Shadow League member waited for the name of their target.
When Cheng Wei still didn’t speak, he cleared his throat and said, “Please tell me the name of the person you want to have investigated, and the Shadow League will take action right away.”
“Of course.” Cheng Wei reached for a piece of paper. Yao Tang’s basic information was scribbled haphazardly on it, and she proceeded to read them out loud.
“Her name is Yao Tang. She’s a third-year at No. 1 High School in City A. She’s considered the campus belle, but I heard that she’s constantly involved in scandalous activities.”
Cheng Wei tossed the note aside, only to realize that the man she was supposed to be talking to had already hung up!
Her jaw dropped as she listened to the dial tone for a few seconds.
What the h.e.l.l was going on?
Cheng Wei frowned at her phone in confusion.
In the next second, however, she received a message from an unknown number.
It read: “Dearest Client. The Shadow League’s system is currently down and is undergoing repair. We apologize for the inconvenience. Consequently, we will not be accepting any job requests for the foreseeable future. Thank you for understanding.”
Cheng Wei huffed in frustration. In the end, she had no choice but to dial a different number.
…
Yun Tian leaned back against his seat and let out a long sigh of relief. He patted his chest in an effort to calm himself down.
Someone had actually tried to use the Shadow League to investigate their own boss!
He could have signed his own death warrant there and then.
No one in the Shadow League would turn on their own, unless that idiot no longer wanted to exist in this world.
Yun Tian quickly sent a message to Yao Tang, who was in cla.s.s: “Boss, someone wanted to hire the organization to dig some dirt on you, but don’t worry! I already rejected their request.”
Yao Tang couldn’t even be bothered to prop her head up from her desk. She held her phone under the table and typed a few words.
“Why didn’t you take it? Earning money is more important than anything.”
Yun Tian grinned at her reply. It was so typical of her boss. Perhaps he should have just sent the client some false information and taken her money anyway.
Sure, it was a violation of the Shadow League’s rules, but as the boss said, money was more important than anything.
