The courtyard was overgrown with weeds as tall as a person, even cracking the gaps between the stone tiles. The three surrounding corridors were completely blocked by the dense overgrowth.
The only place untouched by the weeds was a large circular platform of white marble beneath Liao Chen’s feet.
However, even that surface was coated in a thick layer of dust. With every step Liao Chen took, he left clear footprints in the dirt.
The surroundings were eerily quiet.
So quiet that it stirred an inexplicable sorrow in one’s heart.
Liao Chen walked a few steps forward and stopped at the very center of the platform.
He gazed straight ahead, his eyes unfocused, his sight empty and distant.
"Come out." He said.
A small figure leaped down from the wall on the eastern side.
"When did you notice me?" Gu Jiao approached from behind him, "I was very careful."
"Heh." Liao Chen didn’t turn around. Instead, he looked up at the vast expanse of the starry sky and replied indifferently, "Is there something you want to ask me?"
Gu Jiao patted the dust off her clothes and spat out a blade of gra.s.s she had been chewing. "Did you already know who I was?"
Liao Chen responded, "Define ‘already.’ How early are you talking about?"
Gu Jiao thought for a moment before replying, "Back at Guanshan, you must have recognized me immediately. What I’m curious about is whether, the first time in the countryside, you deliberately fell into that trap just to wait for me to rescue you."
Liao Chen’s tone remained light and unhurried as he said, "Falling into the trap was an accident; pretending not to recognize you was intentional. Since my disciple was taken in by you, I had to check what kind of family had adopted him. I wandered around your village, saw your whole family, and that was the end of it."
Gu Jiao walked to his side, turning her head to size him up from head to toe. His demeanor now was quite different from what it had been before.
The mischievous charm in his peach blossom eyes was gone, and the playful, insincere smile at the corners of his lips had also vanished.
He seemed to be enveloped in an invisible, commanding aura.
Gu Jiao withdrew her gaze and s.h.i.+fted her focus to the same place he was looking—the vast, boundless starry sky.
"Fine, I’ll believe you for now. But why did you pretend not to recognize me?" Gu Jiao asked.
Wasn’t that obvious? Of course to avoid you bringing that little troublemaker to pester me every now and then.
Liao Chen said seriously, "I’m not someone who’s comfortable interacting with others. I find it easier to deal with strangers. If you all, the common folk, keep coming around to engage with me, it just gets on my nerves."
"This reason is barely acceptable." Gu Jiao replied, not really concerned with whether he was lying or not, as this particular matter didn’t hold much importance for her.
However, the next question was one where Gu Jiao needed him to be honest.
She turned to look at him and asked, "Do you know this place?"
"A martial arts training ground." Liao Chen answered.
After speaking, he realized that Gu Jiao wasn’t asking about the open area beneath their feet but the entire estate.
Gu Jiao turned back to face him, her gaze fixed firmly on his profile. "You know this is the Xuanyuan Family’s training ground. So what is your relations.h.i.+p with the Xuanyuan Family? Don’t tell me there’s no connection. You taught me the seven forms of Xuanyuan Spear Techniques—I already know that much."
Liao Chen gazed at the half-moon above, his fingers tightening slightly, but he said nothing.
Gu Jiao continued, her expression growing serious as she pressed on, "If you don’t want to answer that, fine. After all, you’re not anyone I’m close to, so you don’t owe me an explanation. But let me ask you a different question."
Her expression turned serious, her tone leaving no room for refusal. "Does Jing Kong have any connection to the Xuanyuan Family?"
Gu Jiao’s question was not without careful consideration, as she had thought it through thoroughly on her way here.
Before Gu Yan was injured by Nangong Li, the admission letters had already been sent to Little Jing Kong.
In other words, Liao Chen didn’t know that something would happen to Gu Yan. He had simply hoped that they would come to study in the State of Yan.
Or more precisely, he had hoped that they, along with Little Jing Kong, would come to Shengdu to study.
Little Jing Kong was most attached to Gu Jiao, so arrangements were made for her to enroll in Canglan Women's Academy. This way, the two wouldn't have to be separated.
Meanwhile, Tianqiong Academy, though located in the outer city, was the simplest academy in terms of student backgrounds. Apart from Mu Qingchen and Mu Chuan, no members of the eleven n.o.ble families came to study there during this time.
And even Mu Qingchen rarely attended.
Their cla.s.s schedule was also staggered from Mu Chuan’s.
All of these arrangements drastically minimized their chances of encountering or clas.h.i.+ng with the n.o.ble families.
It could be said that every arrangement was meticulously perfect.
But the question remained: Was he sending Little Jing Kong off to study, or was he taking him back home?
Liao Chen s.h.i.+fted his gaze from the moon and turned around, his eyes landing on Gu Jiao’s face, which held a hint of youthful innocence yet retained an undeniable air of courage and resolve. "Before I answer your question, I have one of my own."
Gu Jiao responded, "I asked first."
Liao Chen said, "I know, so you don't have to answer mine if you don't want to."
Gu Jiao looked at him intently.
He spoke solemnly, "Do you truly think you can bear the full truth now? If you can’t, then it might be better for you not to know at all."
......
In the latter half of the night, a light drizzle fell over Shengdu.
When Gu Jiao returned to the Imperial Advisor's Hall, her clothes were lightly damp, the water forming faint stains on the fabric.
Xiao Heng was waiting for her in the room.
Seeing her enter with a chill clinging to her, Xiao Heng quickly grabbed a towel to wipe away the moisture from her face and hair.
Gu Jiao said, "It’s nothing, just a light drizzle. It stopped before it even started. Is Jing Kong asleep?"
Xiao Heng glanced toward the little guy behind the curtain. "He fell asleep before we even reached the Imperial Advisor's Hall. How about you? How are things on your side?"
Gu Jiao walked over to the bedside and glanced at the little guy before responding, "He went to the Xuanyuan Family and seems very familiar with the place."
Xiao Heng mused, "Does he have some connection to the Xuanyuan Family?"
"I'm guessing it's highly likely." Gu Jiao replied, recounting her two encounters with Liao Chen to Xiao Heng.
Xiao Heng fell silent.
He had already found Liao Chen odd when he saw him eating dumplings. But he hadn't expected Liao Chen to possess such formidable martial skills or to be so ruthless when it came to killing. Such actions hardly seemed befitting of a benevolent monk.
On top of that, Liao Chen also knew the Xuanyuan Family’s spear techniques——
"So, what about Jing Kong?" Xiao Heng asked.
Gu Jiao said, "I asked about Jing Kong, and he told me that if I couldn’t bear the truth, it would be better not to know it at all."
The kind of "bearing" he referred to wasn’t about being able to handle emotional shock.
If Little Jing Kong really did have a connection to the Xuanyuan Family, given their current strength, it was likely they wouldn’t be able to protect him.
So, perhaps it was better not to know and to avoid unnecessary worries.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the s.h.i.+ family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hards.h.i.+p and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When s.h.i.+ Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the s.h.i.+ family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like s.h.i.+ Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
s.h.i.+ Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
