Second Master Jing hummed and responded to Gu Jiao, "Isn't it because my elder brother sent me here? He initially wanted to come himself, but with all the flas.h.i.+ng blades and clas.h.i.+ng swords here, it wouldn’t be good if he got hurt. So, I volunteered to come in his place!"
Gu Jiao asked, “Does Lord Duke have business with me?”
"You…" Second Master Jing was baffled by Gu Jiao's response. Folding his arms across his chest, he leaned out of the carriage window to look at her, "You… shouldn't you go meet my elder brother?"
“Hm?” This time, it was Gu Jiao’s turn to be confused.
Second Master Jing explained, "You partic.i.p.ated in the selection using the ident.i.ty of my elder brother's son. What do you think?"
The Duke Estate… Young master?
Gu Jiao opened her pouch and took out the token.
She flipped it over for a closer look, and indeed saw the character "Jing" engraved on it.
Second Master Jing took in Gu Jiao’s utterly confused expression and let out a small sound of realization before asking, "Don't tell me… you're only just finding out now?"
"Yes." Gu Jiao nodded blankly, still dazed.
Second Master Jing: “…”
Gu Jiao carefully put the token away and then asked Second Master Jing, "Why would the Imperial Advisor seek out Duke An Estate? Aren’t your families on bad terms?"
Second Master Jing sighed deeply, "You're right, our relations.h.i.+p isn't great. Initially, my elder brother planned to refuse outright. But as soon as he heard it was about you, he agreed without hesitation. I really can’t figure out what’s so special about you that you’ve managed to win him over like this."
Gu Jiao replied seriously, “I’m just that great.”
Second Master Jing: “…”
Since she had used the Duke Estate’s name, it was only proper for Gu Jiao to go and meet the Lord Duke.
However, she truly hadn’t expected the Imperial Advisor to involve the Duke An Estate in this matter.
As Second Master Jing looked at the imposing and spirited Black Wind King, a hint of doubt crossed his face. "Huh? Isn’t this the same horse that rammed headfirst into the Xuanyuan Family’s gates last time and ended up bloodied? It’s looking pretty lively now."
Gu Jiao said, “It’ll only get better with time.”
Second Master Jing led Gu Jiao to the same courtyard they had visited last time.
Duke An sat in his wheelchair beneath the corridor, quietly gazing toward the main gate, as if he had been eagerly awaiting Gu Jiao's arrival.
His complexion looked noticeably better compared to their previous meeting, finally shedding the frail and sickly appearance he once had.
According to Second Master Jing, his elder brother’s mobility had improved, and he was able to write more as well.
As Gu Jiao entered the courtyard, Duke An’s eyes lit up, and his hands, resting on the wheelchair’s armrests, began to tremble slightly with emotion.
“Elder brother, I’ve brought him here!” Second Master Jing stepped forward from Gu Jiao’s side, deliberately positioning himself in front of her.
Duke An’s face darkened.
Move aside!
Gu Jiao led the Black Wind King into the courtyard as well.
The Black Wind King reined in its usual aggression and allowed the servants to lead it to the stable to rest.
Meanwhile, Second Master Jing busied himself with feeding the horse.
Gu Jiao walked over to the corridor, where a chair had already been placed in front of Duke An.
He gestured with his eyes, signaling for Gu Jiao to sit down.
"Lord Duke is looking much better lately." Gu Jiao remarked as she took her seat, looking directly at him.
Every time Duke An met with Gu Jiao, his recovery would take a noticeable leap forward, a phenomenon that felt almost miraculous.
Dipping his fingertips in water, Duke An wrote on the armrest of his wheelchair: ‘How is the selection process going?’
Gu Jiao’s lips curved into a faint smile. "I advanced."
With a sense of pride, Duke An wrote: ‘Just as I expected.’
Gu Jiao observed the strength and steadiness of his fingers, noting that his recovery truly was progressing well.
Looking at his face, which felt inexplicably familiar and comforting, Gu Jiao asked, "Why did you agree to the Imperial Advisor’s request? I have many enemies."
Duke An wrote: ‘I’ll protect you.’
A man confined to a wheelchair, who had been little more than a vegetative state before, was now claiming he would protect an a.s.sa.s.sin.
A strange emotion flickered in Gu Jiao’s heart.
She didn’t know what that feeling was.
It seemed to carry a hint of warmth, mixed with a faint bitterness and a slight twinge of pain.
This pain was different from the kind she experienced from injuries, and Gu Jiao couldn’t quite grasp its meaning yet.
Duke An continued writing: ‘I have something for you. Push me inside.’
Gu Jiao began pus.h.i.+ng him toward the study.
He hadn’t specifically mentioned the study, but somehow, Gu Jiao instinctively knew that was where he meant.
Once inside, Duke An fixed his gaze on a blue-and-white porcelain vase on the bookshelf.
Gu Jiao walked over, raised her hand, and gently turned the vase. With a soft click, a hidden door swung open.
Gu Jiao pushed Duke An to the entrance of the secret room.
On the armrest, Duke An wrote: ‘The things you need are inside. Go in and take them.’
"Alright." Gu Jiao replied and stepped into the secret room.
What greeted her eyes were a set of crimson battle garments and black armor.
The material of both the garments and the armor was specially crafted, impervious to blades, spears, fire, and water.
Gu Jiao stood there in a daze, staring at the crimson garments and black armor for a long moment without saying a word.
Duke An slowly lifted his trembling fingers and, with great effort, wrote: ‘This armor was prepared by Yinyin’s grandfather for her, but sadly, she never had the chance to wear it. Now, I am giving it to you.’
The battle garments and armor were designed to be compatible for both male and female, as long as the size fit, anyone could wear them.
Gu Jiao reached out, her fingertips lightly brus.h.i.+ng against the cold surface of the black armor.
Duke An had nearly exhausted his strength, and beads of sweat began forming on his forehead as he continued to write: ‘Do you like it?’
"I like it." Gu Jiao replied.
By the time Second Master Jing returned after feeding the horse, Gu Jiao had already changed into the battle garments and armor. In her hands, she held a cold, imposing helmet, radiating an air of severity and killing intent.
Second Master Jing’s steps faltered instantly at the sight.
Of course, he knew about his elder brother’s intention to gift the armor. Initially, he had opposed the idea, believing that since it belonged to Yinyin, it shouldn’t be given away.
If his elder brother truly wanted to give something away, he could have just gone out and bought another set of armor.
But seeing Gu Jiao clad in crimson and black, standing before him with such commanding presence, Second Master Jing felt an inexplicable sense of rightness.
It was as though these items had always belonged to her.
After years of being locked away, they had finally awaited the arrival of their rightful owner. And now, she had reclaimed the battle garments and armor that were hers all along.

Description:
In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the s.h.i.+ family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hards.h.i.+p and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.
When s.h.i.+ Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the s.h.i.+ family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.
The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.
From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.
***
Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like s.h.i.+ Dai.
After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"
s.h.i.+ Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
—
Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”
s.h.i.+ Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."
Jiang Baiyan: ...?
He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
