When the Imperial Advisor returned with two bamboo stalks, he saw Gu Jiao slumped over the table, completely unconscious.

Yu He, looking like a child caught in trouble, stood up, lowered his head, and panickedly said, "I’m sorry, Master, I... I gave Young Master Xiao a little bit of osmanthus wine."

The Imperial Advisor frowned, “You gave her wine?”

Yu He opened his mouth but couldn’t find an excuse, “I…”

The Imperial Advisor always spoke without emotion, but now there was a hint of displeasure in his tone, “She cannot drink alcohol.”

Yu He hung his head even lower, “…Yes, Master, I was wrong.”

The osmanthus wine had been left on the table, so Yu He a.s.sumed it was for entertaining Xiao Liulang.

The Imperial Advisor gently placed the bamboo stalks on the ground, then walked over to Gu Jiao. He bent down and lifted her into his arms, carrying her to the inner room.

Yu He’s eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.

His master, who had never even carried his senior brother, actually carried Xiao Liulang!

And into the inner room, no less?

The Imperial Advisor placed Gu Jiao on a bamboo bed and instructed the disciples from the purple bamboo grove to prepare a sobering soup.

This was a side of the Imperial Advisor that Yu He had never seen before. By the time his master had reached such a level of cultivation, he had long mastered the art of hiding his emotions, remaining untouched by the world’s distractions.

But just moments ago, Yu He had seen emotions in his master's eyes.

“You may leave.” the Imperial Advisor said to Yu He.

“…Understood.” Yu He cupped his hands respectfully and withdrew without daring to glance around.

Even after leaving the courtyard, he was still deeply puzzled.

What exactly was the relations.h.i.+p between Xiao Liulang and his master?

Why did his master repeatedly make exceptions for him?

……

Gu Jiao’s hangover hit hard. At first, she was just drunkenly asleep, but later she began to have wild, disjointed dreams.

She first dreamed of being eight years old, brought into an organization by a youth in military boots.

The youth was sixteen, the youngest G.o.dfather in the organization, and also its most cold-blooded a.s.sa.s.sin.

She was the first child he had ever brought back, but he treated her with the utmost cruelty and detachment.

He was always punis.h.i.+ng her.

In the dead of night, she was often the only one running laps around the training ground.

He lurked in the shadows like a panther, making sure she didn’t slack off.

She would always push herself to exhaustion before he carried her back like a sack of potatoes.

He never took anyone else on the most dangerous missions.

“Shadow, you’re coming with me.”

She often suspected he was trying to use the missions to get rid of her.

When she and other members of the organization were captured as hostages, he didn’t spare her a glance, rescuing only the others and leaving her behind.

Yet, it was during that very mission that those very members he cared for were killed, while she, the one he hadn’t even looked at, survived.

In that moment, she seemed to understand something.

“Wake up. Drink some sobering soup before you sleep again.”

The faint voice seemed to drift to her ears from above the water’s surface, breaking apart the dream.

The images from her dream shattered, and Gu Jiao groggily opened her eyes. She glanced around, not quite processing what was happening, and then closed her eyes again, falling back into sleep.

She began to dream again, though it was no longer the same dream.

The weather was beautiful, and she found herself in a small courtyard filled with lily-of-the-valley flowers, with a cl.u.s.ter of green bamboo growing in one corner.

A gentle breeze rustled the bamboo leaves and lilies, making them sway together.

She recognized this place; it was the courtyard she had visited that afternoon.

How had she returned here?

Where was Lord Duke?

As this thought crossed her mind, she saw the door to the main house open, and someone stepped out. But it wasn’t the Lord Duke; it was a pregnant woman.

The woman wore a purple battle garment and silver armor, carrying a longbow as though she were heading to war.

The young Duke An walked out after her, gazing at her deeply, his eyes slightly red.

The woman smiled and said, “Take care of Yinyin. I’ll be back soon.”

But you never returned.

This thought suddenly flashed through Gu Jiao’s mind.

She looked at the woman’s retreating figure as she left the courtyard.

Don’t go.

You’ll die on the battlefield.

Gu Jiao wanted to stop her.

But no sound came from her throat.

She struggled a few times.

Suddenly, a little girl stumbled out of the house, her tender voice piercing the air, “Mother—”

Gu Jiao's body jolted, and her eyes flew open.

A faint sound lingered in her ears, though she couldn’t tell if it came from herself or the dream.

“You’re awake.”

The Imperial Advisor sat on a chair by the bed, looking at her calmly. “Do you want some sobering soup? Or perhaps you don’t need it anymore?”

Gu Jiao glanced around and realized she was in an unfamiliar room. But when she looked out the door and saw the familiar main hall, she understood she was still in the small bamboo house within the purple bamboo grove.

“No need. I’m awake now.” Gu Jiao sat up, her head still aching a bit. “What kind of wine did you brew? The aftereffects are intense.”

“It’s your poor alcohol tolerance.” the Imperial Advisor replied. “Ye Qing can drink an entire jar without issue.”

Knowing her own drinking capacity, Gu Jiao surprisingly kept silent and didn’t argue.

"Were you dreaming just now?" The Imperial Advisor asked.

At the mention of it, Gu Jiao furrowed her brow slightly. Over the past few days, she had had many dreams, but always forgot them upon waking. This time, perhaps because of the lingering effects of the alcohol, she could remember the latter half of the dream.

“Yes.” She didn’t deny it.

The Imperial Advisor placed the sobering soup on the bedside table, “What did you dream about? Your reaction was quite intense.”

Gu Jiao looked at him strangely. “My reaction… was intense?”

The Imperial Advisor glanced at her. “If you don’t remember, forget it.”

Gu Jiao suddenly spoke. “I dreamed of the young Duke An, his wife, and their child.”

She had seen a portrait of Xuanyuan Zi in the library pavilion before, so dreaming of her wasn’t surprising.

As for the dream’s content, perhaps it stemmed from hearing too many stories about the Xuanyuan family, and her mind had fabricated a parting scene.

But that child…

Wait. The library pavilion didn’t have a portrait of the Jing Family’s child. That was a face she had seen in a painting in the Imperial Advisor’s study!

Was that child really Jing Yinyin, or had she simply attached some random child’s face to the dream version of Jing Yinyin?

The Imperial Advisor noticed Gu Jiao studying him, “Why are you looking at me like that?”

Gu Jiao asked, “The little girl in those paintings in your study, is she Jing Yinyin?”

The Imperial Advisor didn’t seem particularly surprised, “You saw them?”

Was that an admission?

The Imperial Advisor nodded and sighed. “Yes, that’s Jing Yinyin.”

Gu Jiao straightened up and asked seriously, “What’s your connection with Jing Yinyin?”

The Imperial Advisor looked at her, his expression suddenly becoming solemn, “Do you truly want to know?”

Gu Jiao replied, “Yes.”

The Imperial Advisor paused, then said to Gu Jiao, “Very well. If you win the selection and become the commander of the Black Wind Cavalry, I’ll tell you everything.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the s.h.i.+ family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succ.u.mb to darkness amidst hards.h.i.+p and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When s.h.i.+ Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the s.h.i.+ family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like s.h.i.+ Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

s.h.i.+ Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

s.h.i.+ Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

s.h.i.+ Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
