The high bridge of his nose left a light shadow on his cheek, his long eyelashes refracting the sunlight. Under the blinding sunlight, he blinked, slowly raising his head from his arms.

1↩: I just thought this was funny, but the guy actually said "laozi's laozi will beat me" lmao. He's referring to himself as laozi, but his laozi is his dad. Also a quick note on Chinese cursing, it often uses family members. I think you can tell by the context, but a general rule of thumb is that older generations are more venerated and younger generations less. If you're being beaten into a grandson, you're being beaten reaaal bad lol. On the other hand, if you're making someone call you grandpa, you're making them submit to you.

2↩: Su Yin is called a 學霸, literally a learning tyrant, while Xie Fei is a 校霸, also a school tyrant. The first character of each is both in the Chinese word for school. To be honest, I'm not completely clear on the distinction (mainly because they translate to English in a way that's so close), but a 校霸/school tyrant is like the kind of people who rule the school because they're bullies. Su Yin is a proper, model student ?

3↩: The actual phrase is more like "I even thought you'd only go out on dates with Duke Zhou", where "date" is more like "appointment" or "outing" than the romantic kind of dates like in English. Duke of Zhou was a historical figure who played an important role in establis.h.i.+ng Western Zhou, and he's also known as the G.o.d of Dreams. In Chinese legend, people believed that the Duke of Zhou would come to you in dreams if something important was going to happen.
