The bird was tiny compared to the other birds Ben had met. It was the size of a large dog before the mutations but its speed was ridiculous. Even with his eyes he was only able to defend himself and not dodge its attacks.
"b.a.s.t.a.r.d!" Ben cursed. Everytime he was about to deal a fatal blow to the Lightning Eagle the tiny sparrow would attack him causing him to defend and let the eagle escape.
Black clouds started rolling in, threatening to rain on them.
'Ava how are you doing over there?' Ben asked through their soul link.
'Tough enemies. Might take us a while.' she said shortly, focused on the battle.
'Looks like a won't be getting any help anytime soon.' Ben complained in his heart.
The eagle attacked again, sending bolts of lightning towards Ben.
'Idiot.'
Ben stuck out his hand and obsorbed the lightning before sending it back at the eagle. Panicking, the eagle tried to turn and avoid them only to have its wing struck by Ben's lgihtning. The injury was light but it still dampened its flying ability.
'Nows my chance.' Ben thought as he flew at the eagle with speed. The eagle tried to retreat seeing Ben flying towards him but was unable to get away from him. Ben slashed down towards the eagle's head but the blade was intercepted by the Shadow Sparrow.
'Let's see how many of my attacks you can block.' Ben smirked as he continued to hack and slash at the eagle.
The eagle tried to fight back but was unable to escape the barrage of attacks from Ben. Everytime the sword was about to claim the life of the eagle, the Shadow Sparrow would block of deflect the attack, saving its life.
Ben stabbed his katana towards the eagle's eye but he could see the sparrow das.h.i.+ng to deflect it. Ben smirked and started to throw his Ninjato towards the eagles chest.
Unable to defend both attacks, the sparrow choose to defend the eagle from the fatal attack from the katana. The ninjato pierce the eagles chest but wasn't able to do any harmful damage due to the length of the blade.
It achieved what Ben had wanted, controlling his lightning Ben sent a bolt towards the short sword. The bolt hit the sword and traveled along the blade, wreaking havoc inside the eagles body.
Thanks to it being undead, the internal damage wasn't able to kill it but the eagle still let out a screech of pain as the lightning traveled throughout its body. Seeing the eagle stunned by the lightning, Ben then used Ava's Black h.e.l.l Flame and threw it on the eagle.
The black flames quickly consumed the eagle as it shrieked trying to escape the flames. Ben finally turned to face the Shadow Sparrow now that the eagle was dead.
Seeing the eagle die the sparrow didn't have any second thoughts and immediately retreated. Ben thought about chasing it but decided against it and returned to the wall.
Upon landing a huge cheer erupted from the soldiers.
Ben smiled and walked towards his generals and Deke, his wings slowly sinking back into his body.
"Took you long enough!" Colton laughed as he patted Ben's shoulder.
"Do you need healing City Lord?" Lilith asked as her hands started to give off a white light.
"No need. My injuries are minor but please heal the soldiers." Ben smiled at her offer.
Lilith nodded before walking away towards the injured soldiers.
"Casualties?" Ben asked solemnly.
"Not as bad as you would think thanks to the healers and the civilians." James said.
During the battle, civilians that couldn't fight were tasked to transport injured soldiers from the frontline back to the city. Lane came up with this idea due to the lack of manpower of the armies.
"And because of the dwarves powerful weapons and s.h.i.+elds." Lane said and Colton nodded his head in agreement. Both of them used stronger weapons from the system but soldiers were not able to afford them. The weapons supplied by the dwarves were fairly high ranked and durable, not breaking during battle.
Deke cleared his throat and started reporting the casualties. "1025 warriors, 400 knights, 152 rangers, 58 mages and 10 healers."
Colton's face turned ugly as he heard the report, his division had suffered to most casualties.
Ben patted his shoulder, "There's nothing you can do. You are the vanguard so it's normal for you to have the most casualties."
The mages didn't join the ground battle and stayed mostly on the wall so they didn't have as many casualties.
"How are the Red Forest Wolves?" Ben asked looking at James.
"Their deaths were pretty low considering but Eve is still upset." James sighed.
Ben nodded slowly. "Night is approaching. Everyone should rest for now. I want 100 people at every gate watching for attacks. Rotate them out every 5 hours." Ben told his generals. They all nodded and headed off.
Deke stood in front of Ben not saying anything.
"How many did you lose?" Ben asked quietly.
During the battle the Shadows a.s.sa.s.sinated powerful zombies to lessen the burden on the army. Judging by Deke's face, Ben guessed they lost some people.
"... five." Deke said quietly.
Though five didn't seem like alot, the Shadows only had around 30 members in total and more importantly, they were all part of Deke's family.
"I'm sorry." Ben told the old man.
Deke nodded and looked over the wall at the zombies, his face expressionless.
"In a couple hours gather the Shadows, we are striking back tonight." Ben said as he watched the sun slowly set.
A light flashed across Deke's eyes as he nodded and disappeared.
Ben continued to watch the sunset. Though the casualties seemed low, he knew that the zombies held back their mutants and undead beasts causing him to think if he could actually win this battle.
*Whoos.h.!.+*
Ava and Takon landed next to him, bits of flesh and blood was on Takon's scales but it didn't seem to be his.
'Sorry it took so long. Annoying little f.u.c.ker was fast.' Takon cursed as he licked his scales clean.
Ava nodded and entered Ben's soul realm to rest. After Takon cleaned himself, he did the same.
Ben shook his head and smiled. Of course he could win, he had his soul beasts and family.
