As I reached the roof of the first hall of the fortress, I looked around at the small courtyard I could see off to the left, and the towers sticking out of this part.

The other parts of the fortress were noticeably at a higher elevation than the last, like stairs, making it so you could see it all from the entryway for maximum psychological effect.
