Chapter 9: Kysael- Discovery

June, 1102 A.D.

t.i.t was the eleventh of June, the sixth month of my pregnancy, when I awoke in the dead of night with unbearable stomach pain. t

tPain radiated through my entire body, and I waddled out of my room to get a gla.s.s of water when water came rus.h.i.+ng out of me to puddle at my feet.

t"Dragon!" I called sharply. He got up quickly, coming into the sitting area with his robe tied around him, his eyes worried. "It's time."

t"Right! Go back to bed, I will grab my things and we will get started."

tI made my way back to my room, lying down on the bed. Fear rushed through my mind. Would this child be evil? Would it look like its father? Would it be a male, a female? I was so afraid.

tI was gasping in pain when Dragon returned, bursting through the door with his supplies.

t.i.t was only him, since no one else could know what was happening. Just as it had been with my birth, this child's ident.i.ty must stay a secret.

tHe put a cool, damp cloth on my forehead, holding my hand for a moment before he started talking me through giving birth.

tWith tremendous force, I bore down with all my might when I was instructed to push.

tI growled out a ferocious sounding cry as I could feel the child's head stretch me. The injuries inside of me pulled, tugged, and ripped. I screamed out, not knowing if I could get through this.

tBut I could already feel the head pa.s.sing, and I would simply have to continue on with this until it was over. It was already too late to deliver the child through my stomach.

t"The head has pa.s.sed, Kysael!" He told me anxiously. "Now, take a breath and push again to pa.s.s the shoulders!"

tWith weakening strength, I choked out a gurgled gasp as I pushed, and felt the shoulders pa.s.s out of me.

t"One more push ought to do it, Kysael," Dragon said softly, calm as could be. "You are doing great. One more pus.h.!.+"

tI cried as I used the rest of my fading energy to push one last time, and when he slapped the babe's behind lightly to knock the fluid from its lungs, and as it let out a piercing cry, my body fell back onto the bed, my chest heaving from exhaustion.

tDragon made haste cutting the umbilical cord, and he took the child to clean all of the blood and afterbirth from its tiny body.

tDragon rushed to heal me, his eyes not really looking at me, more looking off to see the infant.

tHis eyes made sure not to linger on me for more than a split second, and it took a good half hour for him to completely heal my insides.

tHe didn't let his hands get too close, not close enough to really touch me there.

tThey hovered, but I could still feel the heat of his healing powers, and it still made me...uncomfortably warm, considering that my child was in the room. It made my cheeks burn, and my heart quicken.

tDragon gave nervous glances up at my face, around the room, until he was finished.

t"There. There is still blood and afterbirth, but the injuries are healed, at last." He took a deep breath. His attention turned to the baby. "Now, let us check on the baby."

tHe went over to the corner, Dragon checking to be sure the child was healthy, and then he made haste, finis.h.i.+ng cleaning it.

tAnd then he stopped.

t"What is it? What is wrong?" I asked, panic rus.h.i.+ng into me.

tDragon slowly came back over to me, covering my mutilated nether regions with a blanket before he went back to get the child from the table, and brought it to me for me to see.

tRelief and disappointment had my head spinning. Relief when Dragon told me the child was healthy, and disappointment at the child's appearance.

tA head full of white hair and blazing, blood red eyes greeted me.

t"You have a daughter," he said softly.

tI took a better look at the girl. White hair and red eyes, with my skin tone, thankfully. She had pointed elven ears, and she had chubby cheeks.... chubby cheeks with Wraith markings....my Wraith markings.

tOnly instead of the beautiful, Royal blue color, they were the color of freshly spilled blood, matching her eyes.... matching her father's eyes.

tShe had thick, thick pouty lips, and a curved inward nose that didn't belong to me, since mine was straighter. Her facial features resembled her father more than I, but at least she had my skin tone.

tShe was beautiful, yes. I was disappointed, but at the same time, I was proud. I had just spent several months carrying this child, and given birth to this child. My child. My beautiful child.

t"What will you name her?" He asked softly.

tI thought for a moment. "I will name her 'Kirinae'," I replied.

t"'Child of Woodelves'. Let's hope she lives up to that name and behaves like one," Dragon said. "So, I take it that her father had white hair and red eyes, of course, right?"

tI nodded. "Yes, she has his features. The hair and eyes, the nose, the lips...She is certainly his child."

tHe sighed sadly. "At least she is beautiful," he whispered.

t"Let's hope that her actions will be beautiful as well," I said. I held her out to Dragon. "Would you mind taking her for a bit? I need to rest. I feel drowsy."

tHe did so, and the child's eyes locked onto him, and she smiled as she snuggled into his chest.

tI chuckled. "She seems to like you, Dragon. Perhaps I may have some compet.i.tion," I joked.

t"You would have to be an unintelligent, blind fool if you've ever thought that you had any compet.i.tion," he said in a hushed, dark tone.

t"What?" I gaped. He jolted; his eyes wide.

t"Did....Did I really just say that aloud?" He asked, mortified and cheeks red.

tI nodded, and Dragon covered his face with one hand. "Oh, heavens. I cannot believe that I actually said that aloud."

t"I take it that you meant for that bit of information to stay in your mind, then," I said harshly.

tHe sighed. "Kysael," he began, but I cut him off.

t"What are you saying? What is that even supposed to mean, Dragon? What, that you have feelings for me? I thought that you didn't have any feelings of that nature for me."

tHe threw up his hands. "I only just realized it myself a while ago, Kysael. And what am I supposed to do? You are under a mating mark with someone else, a powerful sorcerer and Prince of the Darkelf people. I don't even know what it means myself, how was I supposed to tell you? Kysael, I have always seen you as family. I am just so conflicted. I don't even understand my feelings myself yet. I didn't want to talk to you about this until I knew how I felt, in full depth."

tI couldn't think of anything to say. And I got mad at myself. "I'm sorry."

tHe patted my shoulder. "It's alright. I know that you aren't a patient young woman," he grinned. "And I suppose I should have spoken to you about it." He gave me a hug before he stood and left, going to off into the house to give me some peace to rest.

tI sighed, and as I let the baby nurse from me, I slipped into a light sleep. I was in a safe position, as Dragon had showed me previously. And I knew that Dragon would be back in shortly to check on me. If he heard anything amiss, too, he would rush back in.

tAs I dosed, I began to go into a dream...

tThere sat a woman, with almond shaped, hazel eyes. Beautiful, s.h.i.+ny auburn hair rested on her head, pulled up into a fancy up-style. She was beautiful, and I could swear that I had seen her somewhere before. Her face was heart shaped, like mine.

tShe felt so familiar to me. She looked at me with an expression that I couldn't identify, and I searched my frazzled mind for some kind of information about this woman.

tAnd the only thing that I had, was a glimpse-a small, blurry glimpse, looking up at her worried face, seeing her pressing kisses to my forehead and nursing me. I startled.

t"You-you're my-"

t"You shouldn't be so hard on him, dear. Dragon has never been a very.... expressive man. He's subtle, private, and personal. He doesn't like getting too serious too quickly. He doesn't like telling people how he feels, or feeling insecure about how he feels. You just need to give him some time to work things out for himself, and to accept those feelings. Once he is ready, he will be more open with you about it."

t"You...you are my mother," I said softly.

t"It is nice to finally meet you, Kysael."

tI felt warmer than I ever had as she embraced me.

t"Dragon will open up to you eventually. I've known him for a long time, and he has done a fantastic job raising you. Give him some time, dear."

tI nodded. "You're right. I haven't been thinking about how this situation has affected him. I've only been thinking about me." I yawned.

t"Get some rest for a few hours. When she gets hungry, Dragon will bring her to you for you to feed her. He has taken her, now, to put her in the cradle to sleep."

t"I see. I am very tired."

t"Get some sleep. I am sure that I will meet you again in your dreams sometime or another," she laughed, and I loved the tinkle of it.

t"Thank you, mother."

tShe smiled at me, and left my mind.

tOver the next few weeks, I held the girl often. Awake, asleep...I would watch her with fascination.

tThis was my child.

tMy daughter.

tI watched her red eyes stare up at me in wonderment, too aware...too observant. Her eyes were bright and knowledgeable.

tI would talk to her softly, whispering sweet, smooth lullabies. I would rock her. I would smile at her, and rub my nose to her's. I sang softly. I told her riddles. I would read to her.

tAnd as she grew so rapidly, I could feel her distancing herself from me, wanting s.p.a.ce, not wanting me to touch her as often, not wanting to be close to me.

t.i.t hurt, but I thought it almost for the best, in a way. If someone were to discover her, and she were to be executed, or if Mafrien chose to come and claim her....it would only hurt me to be attached to her.

tAnd if she became evil in the event that she was to survive....

tI don't believe that I could bear it.

July, 1102 A.D.

t.i.t was well into July, now. Kirinae was just turning a month old, and already she was working her way into eating soft, pureed foods, such as stewed, mashed vegetables and fruits.

tShe was already the size of a toddler, and she was starting to try to crawl.

tI was truly frightened by her rate of progression. At this rate, there was no conceivable way that I could possibly keep her hidden.

tI had managed to keep my pregnancy a secret, but once the child was old enough to be walking and running around, it would be exceedingly difficult to hide her from everyone.

tI needed to leave the city. And soon.

tBut each day that pa.s.sed, Kirinae continued to grow.

tAnd it could take weeks to get the approval of the King to leave the city, and that was only if you had a good reason.

tI had not seen Dragon since he had delivered the child, though I knew that, as always, he was watching over me from somewhere.

tHe just didn't want to talk to me yet. I was determined to get back to my old self and not rely on him anymore, and I had tried to return to hunting animals, as per usual.

tAt least the carnivores, which were easier for me to stomach, since they had to eat meat as well.

tDragon finally decided to talk to me, and as he was returning home early one morning while I was on a hunt, he stopped me in the forest.

t"Kysael," he said softly. "Hunting this morning, I see."

t"Yes, I'm trying to get back in shape. I've gotten rusty."

tHe smiled. "How is everything?"

t"Well, as you should well know. I live with you."

tHe followed me back to our home, and he wasn't as stunned to see Kirinae's progress as I might have guessed.

t"I can hardly believe that this is the same child that I delivered only a month ago," he said, disbelieving. "I've been busy with work and then you are always asleep or busy when I return. I haven't really gotten to see her much."

t"Oh, it certainly is her," I said.

t"She has.... grown so rapidly. I cannot even believe it, even though I am seeing it with my own eyes."

t"I know, it is hard for me to think about."

t"How are you handling being a mother?"

tI smiled. "I am tired, and always thirsty no matter how much I hunt. Your blood is the only blood that satisfies me.... well, other than his blood, but I won't go into that. He's not here, and he's not coming back."

tHe sighed, nodding. "You're right. Its best to leave the past in the past." He looked at my daughter. "Have you heard anything from her father?"

tI shook my head. "Nothing yet, thankfully. Though I feel this pulling, tugging sensation coming from my Mating Mark. Other than that, I haven't heard anything from him in anyway. Perhaps he is waiting until she is old enough?"

tHe shrugged. "I wouldn't know." He gave me a hug. "I'm sorry that it's taken so long for me to talk to you. I was.... just so....overwhelmed with all of this."

tI held up a hand, stopping him. "It's alright. I understand. You need time. And I am sorry that I wasn't considering your thoughts and feelings during any of this, Dragon. I have been so extremely selfish. I didn't mean to push you. I'm just lonely, and frightened at the idea that I'll never be wanted. Kelose claimed to love me so very much, and he left me. Mafrien wants me only for his own evil intentions. I suppose that I was just desperate to hear you say that you loved me."

tHe smiled. "I suppose that things have been hard on both of us," he said. He rubbed the back of his head. "I cannot tell you that yet, though, Kysael. Once I say those words to you, I want to be able to give you the attention and care that you long for...but until that mating mark is gone, I cannot."

t"Gone? How could it be gone?" I asked. "Is there a way to make it go away?"

tHe looked away. "It's not possible."

t"Dragon, please! If there is a way, then please, tell me!"

tHis shoulders slumped a bit. "You would have to complete the Soul Bond with Kelose."

tDespair ran through me. "And that isn't possible."

tHe nodded. "That's why I didn't want for you to know. I didn't want for you to get your hopes up about something that isn't possible."

t"Thank you, Dragon....but you cannot continue to try to protect me from everything. There are things in this world that even you cannot protect me from."

*

August, 1102 A.D.

tJuly pa.s.sed quickly into August, the month of my birth. Kirinae only continued to progress rapidly, and my fear only continued to grow.

tShe was now walking and eating solid food, and she was only two months of age. She was the size of an older toddler.

tAnd she could speak in small, cut up sentences.

tAnd so, began the hardest challenge I had ever faced in my life: keeping a running, jumping, climbing, too observant and too intelligent toddler inside the house.

tI began stressing to her that if she were to ever go outside, she would need to have her marking concealed.

tThough the same shape as my own, if anyone saw the coloring, they would know that something was wrong.

tAnd her hair and eyes were a dead give-away for her heritage. Darkelves were the only race with such colorings.

tI nearly had a heart attack one morning when I awoke to find the door standing open...and she was gone.

t"No!" I cried frantically, pulling on my clothes and rus.h.i.+ng out of the door to find her.

t"Kysael!" Dragon called as he approached. "I just saw her, playing with some other children in the forest!"

tHe began to lead me in the direction of where she was. "She cannot be playing with other children!" I cried. "She cannot even leave the house! It's too dangerous!"

tWe arrived quickly, and I was thankful when it was only three younger children....

tAll of whom I immediately recognized.

tThey were all Kelose's younger siblings, playing tag with my Darkelf-Wraith-Woodelf child.

t"Kirinae!" I scolded. "You are coming home, right now!" I shouted.

tShe giggled, running around with the other children, her eyes full of mischief. "No!" She said.

tAnd she took off.

tBefore Dragon could react, I loosened my muscles and limbs, and allowed my Wraith blood to control my speed. I caught up to her and caught her in my arms in mere seconds.

t"How dare you!" I said. "I am your mother, Kirinae. You will listen to me. I gave birth to you and I am the one who is in charge!"

t"I hate you!" She huffed out as Dragon caught up to us.

tThat stung. "Well too bad! Everything that I do, I do to protect you!"

tHer crimson eyes flashed a dangerous pitch black, no white or color visible in her gaze. "I don't care."

t"You do not care if we die?" I asked, hurt.

t"I won't die. Father would never allow it," she said, her eyes still a colorless void.

tI felt my blood run cold, and I was sure all of the color in my face had left me. "Your father?"

t"Father will receive me at the appointed time, and destroy you all, and I will rule over the Realms with him," she said with a sinister, evil smile. And then her eyes slid closed and she went limp in my arms.

tMy knees caved in and my body thumped onto the ground, my evil child still in my arms.

t"Oh, heavens," Dragon whispered.

tI set her down, and then I vomited onto the ground beside of us.

tThis was a frightening discovery. A cruel, frightening discovery.

tI knew that she was dominantly of the Dark Realm, but this.... this was almost too much for me to bear.

tWhat she had said.... the voice that had come out of her little body, the way she had spoken....it was unlike my little daughter's cheery, innocent, ignorant speech. It wasn't broken up pieces of sentences. It was deep, dark, frightening words.

tThat was not my child speaking.

tWhat could I possibly do? She was barely two months of age, and already plotting world domination with her deranged Darkelf father.

tBut I knew that there was light in her heart. She did hold part of the Light Realm inside of her, that much was clear.

tDeep down, she showed good, wholesome qualities. Perhaps there was hope. Perhaps we could change the future.

tI was afraid for my child.

tI was afraid for my family, my friends....my people.

tDragon helped me to get her back home, and I had special locks placed onto the door by a mage in the city. Only Dragon or I could unlock the doors, using our energies.

tHopefully, that would keep her from getting out like that again. If she were to be seen, or something else were to happen....it would mean both of our heads.

tA couple of weeks went by with no problems.

tKirinae didn't seem to remember anything about her eyes going black or telling us her plot with Mafrien. t

tShe had no recollection of anything of the sort.

tThis was even more concerning news for us.

tCould Mafrien control her?

tOr did she simply black out randomly and give evil proclamations?

tI decided that I needed some time to myself, for my twentieth birthday. I arranged for Dragon and I to go out to a fancy pub in the city, and have a good evening of fun and laughter while my mother-in-law watched Kirinae for me.

tI promised Kirinae that if she behaved for her stand-in grandmother, I would bring her home a special souvenir from town.

tShe seemed to agree well enough, and promised to behave. She was normally well behaved.

tShe was excited to receive a special treat from the outside world, and said she would listen to Dragon's mother.

tI tried to put all of my strife and stress out of my mind as Dragon and I went out on the town for my birthday. We had gotten some pie, and he even surprised me with a gift.

tI took the fine, velvety cloth and unfolded it to reveal a beautiful, n.o.ble circlet with a very rare, precious elven gem embedded in the interweaving, intricate stainless silver leaves. The gems were the same color as my eyes.

t"Oh," I breathed. "It's beautiful."

tHe laughed. "I really wasn't sure if you would like it. I know that you don't normally wear jewelry..."

t"It's lovely," I said. "I just don't know when I will get a chance to wear something so fine," I said softly.

tJust as he went to place it on my head, we heard a collection of screams.

tSomehow, I just knew. I knew.

tAnd I was right.

tVicious, violent, furious fear burned through my body at the atrocity that we found.

tMy daughter....my own child, who I loved and feared.... She stood over the slumped, limp, dead body of one of the children she had been playing with a couple of weeks ago, holding his still-beating heart in her cold, unfeeling hand.

tShe watched it pump a few more times with a sick, twisted fascination that disgusted me.

tThe other children watched in horror.

tAnd of course, it would have to be Kelose's youngest sibling, Zakarin of the h.e.l.lebore clan.

t"What has happened here?" I used my most intense, dangerous voice. If she was going to play it like this, then I would have to get on the same level of dangerousness as her.

tKirinae's black eyes locked with mine. "This boy called me a demon's b.a.s.t.a.r.d child, mother. You should be proud of me for defending myself. He hurt my feelings, so I took his heart."

tMy body shook with a mix of emotion. "Kirinae, or whoever you truly are," I said firmly. "You cannot simply kill someone because they hurt your feelings. And now you have done something that cannot be reversed."

t"Is that the laws of your precious Light Realm, mother?" She asked.

t"Do you have any idea what you have done?" I asked.

tShe laughed in a way that made all of the hairs on my arms and the back of my neck stand on end. "Oh, why yes, I do, mother. I have moved a piece on the game board, and thus have started a chain reaction of events that will lead us all to the end."

t"Your father will never rule this world, Kirinae. Do not let him deceive you!"

t"He will. He will come for me and he will destroy you all," she said, and then she fainted.

tThe other children ran away, and got too far before we had a chance to stop them.

tI hesitated, and went to her side after a moment, shaking her blood-covered body. "Kirinae?"

tRed eyes opened to greet me. "M....Mother? What happened? Why do I smell blood?"

tI was, once again, stunned. So, she really didn't remember...? How could she not remember everything that had just happened...?

tDragon gave me a solemn look, and a grave nod.

tI cleared my throat. "You....you killed a child, because he said something that hurt your feelings. You....you killed a child..."

tShe didn't respond for a moment, her eyes wide.

t"You truly don't remember?" Dragon asked her.

tShe shook her head. "I-"

tAlarm horns began sounding from the city, and I knew that the children had reached the city to alert the authorities.

tMy heart raced. It already would have been a disaster if anyone had found out about her existence and her ident.i.ty, but this.... this was murder.

tThe fact that she had no memory of the act was irrelevant.

tThere were witnesses. For a race of people who lived by the code, "An eye for an eye," I would be extremely fortunate not to be executed along with her.

tAt this point, even exile was more than we could hope for.

tWe could hear the soldiers approaching, and Kirinae clung to me, crying.

t"Mother!" She hugged me. "Mother, I didn't mean it! I swear I didn't!"

tI looked at her, all anger washed away by her tears of remorse. Only sadness left in my heart, I gave her a sullen look. "It is too late, my daughter."

tShe began sobbing hysterically, and I looked at Dragon.

t"What can we do?" I asked him.

tHis worried gaze met mine, and he glanced at Kirinae. He let out a heavy breath. "There is only one thing that I know of that could even possibly help you now, and I would need to leave immediately."

t"Go, then, and do what it is that you need to do."

tThe soldiers erupted into the clearing of the forest where we were, and aimed their weapons at us.

t"Kysael of the Huntsmen clan, you and this creature are both to be arrested. You will face trial in twenty-four hours from now."

tI told my child not to fight as they tied our arms to our sides with our hands behind us.

tDragon gave me a quick kiss and a meaningful nod before we were taken away, drug to the dungeon in the Royal Ring of the city.

tWe spent that night in a cold, hard cell.

t"Mother?" My dark child asked.

t"What is it?"

t"We will be alright. You have no reason to be afraid."

tI laughed softly, scoffing.

t"I am being truthful. Father has told me so."

tI looked at her. Her eyes were black, and with a deep, fearful, slightly fascinated realization, I understood then that when her eyes were black, he was talking to her.

t"Why did you kill that child?" I asked him, not her. Although, I didn't really expect for him to answer me.

tI startled when his voice answered me through my daughter's mouth. "It was time to claim what is rightfully mine. I couldn't come to retrieve you, you see, so I had to get you out of the city, by force if necessary. Your lives will, I a.s.sure you, be spared tomorrow. And as soon as you leave those wretched borders.... you will belong to me." And then my child's eyes slid closed, and she slumped over onto the stone floor, unconscious.

tDespite the sinister promise that his words held, I did find some manner of comfort in them. He had a.s.sured that both Kirinae and myself would make it out of the city safely.

tAnd in the face of death, his promise of our survival was enough to comfort me.

tI couldn't help my wondering thoughts as I remembered his dark gray skin, those blood red eyes, the swept up white hair, the strong contours of his face....

tI shook myself. No.

tNo, I couldn't allow myself to begin thinking of him this way. It was just the mating mark. I knew that it was, but...I shook myself from those thoughts. If I began to think of him in that manner, I would begin to care for him. If I began to care for him, I would begin to defend his actions.

tIf I began to defend his actions.... that would mean that I had fallen in love with him.

tAnd I couldn't allow myself to fall in love with an evil monster like Prince Mafrien of the Darkelves.

tI got angry at my own thoughts. This was the sinister, evil creature who had abducted me from my home, beat me, tortured me, raped and tortured me.

tHe was the one who had marked me as his own, who had impregnated me on a whim. He was the one who destroyed everything that I had worked so hard to achieve. He was the one who was getting me exiled from my own home.

tI couldn't afford to fall in love with such an evil creature.

tHe would only destroy me.

tI decided that I needed to get some rest, since tomorrow we would be having to pack all of our things and leaving the city.

tWe would, certainly, be given a time limit to say our goodbyes, pack our things, and be out of the city.

tI needed to have all of my strength.

tI idly wondered how Mafrien could know the outcome of tomorrow's trial. Perhaps he had the gift of foresight on top of his black magic.

tThe thought reminded me of the vision I'd had on the battlefield when I had seen him.

tOur eyes had locked, and suddenly, I was no longer seeing him as a Darkelf. I was seeing him as a Skyelf, one with dark tan skin, black hair, black wings of the softest feathers....and captivating eyes that were the color of the setting sun.

tI had been trying to avoid thinking about that vision. A Darkelf couldn't transform into a Skyelf....could they?

t.i.t was something that had never been tested before. Once an elf was transformed into a Darkelf, there was no changing them back.

t They were stuck that way forever. But what if a Darkelf had been born as a Darkelf, like Mafrien?

tCould someone like him be transformed into a Skyelf? But how could such a transformation even take place?

tWhat if I tried to get closer to Mafrien, and influenced him for good? What would the outcome of that be? Would the good overcome the evil? I couldn't be sure.

tThe biggest question was: "Is it worth the risk if I am wrong?"
